I work at a public elementary school in Indiana. This school gets a high rate of kids with disabilities and bad home lives. We have a lot of behavior problems here. We write a lot of referrals. Last week, the principal held a meeting where she said that we write more referrals than other schools in our district, and she made each teacher sign a goal to write fewer referrals this year. Another teacher raised his hand and said that writing referrals and documenting behavior are necessary first steps in identifying patterns and finding effective interventions. The principal basically shut him down and said that referrals are stigmatizing and contribute to a school to prison pipeline. They continued arguing for a few minutes after the meeting. It turns out the teacher had written a few referrals that were rejected by the principal. The teacher stormed out of the meeting and went to teach his class. I LOVE teaching... It is what I've always wanted to do... But sometimes I am just DONE with the expectations. From multiple students needing extra support, reminders to stay on task, extra working time, modified assignments, etc... to allowing some kids to have Squishies in class cause it's on their 504 plan to help them focus meanwhile other students are wondering why they can't have it but some can... Then there's the BIP's... It's like a whole class period to focus on ONE child and their behavior it seems like. So 90% of the class doesn't get the education they deserve cause I am so focused on one kid and their behavior. I also have pull out kids who go to SPED and I don't give any grades to but I'm supposed to somehow give them grade level instruction and turn in 6 grades a grading period so they can be averaged with SPED grades but they CAN'T do the work and I need to literally hold their hand thru every step in the process. I had a situation with a patient last night that’s keeping me from sleeping today. I came in at 7pm last night. Receiving report on a patient that’s been in the department for about an hour. Came in for lethargy, pale, weakness, and sob. Endorsing RN reports to me that the pt is out of it, drowsy but arousable. She came in hypotensive, like 86 SBP and hypoxic at 86% on RA. The pt was placed on 4L nc (4L was not ordered by the ERP, the RN made the decision to put her on 4L) and saturation was 98-99%. A huge tid bit of info missing from report was pt has hx of COPD. I pop into the room to put quick eyes on the pt. She was certainly drowsy but arousable. Her sister at the bedside talking to her, she’s opening her eyes and such. I had a new pt in another room that was full on sepsis work up so I jumped in there to get started. I hear lab calling. My COPD pt has lactic 2.4 and positive trop. I’m currently a med surg/tele nurse and our small hospital caters mostly to SNFs. Which means 80% of our patients are elderly with dementia. I had a dementia patient (admitted for UTI) and he was AOx1, confused and VERY forgetful. Kinda like Drew Barrymore in 50 first dates. Repetitive conversations within a span of 10 mins. Wanders a lot because he wants his “wife” (fake name: Anna) to take hime home. Obviously I can’t babysit him the entire shift so I got him the virtual sitter. Problem is, he gets really agitated when you redirect and reorient him with “hey patient you’re in the hospital for UTI you need to stay here blah blah”. I even called Anna (who turns out to NOT be his wife lol) and she tried to reorient him but again, he forgets after 10 mins. I’m soooo drained just a couple hours into the shift. So I had this idea to write a fake note from Anna and leave it in his room. I wrote “Patient, I will pick you up later after work. Stay in the room and wait for me. Love, Anna” whic
This week I started my first chapter read Fridays. It’s my first time doing it and oh my gosh it was AMAZING! I read I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic and my students loved it! We had a great conversation about the genre of the book, the character, the setting, and much more! They actually begged for one more chapter. (Which I allowed) They got so excited about the I Survived books that when it was their independent time to read most got a book from the series! I feel a bit alone in this! I went into nursing because I love learning about infectious disease and human anatomy/physiology but didn’t want to spend the time or money to become a doctor lol. I do really enjoy the work of being a nurse and caring for others as well. I’ve been a nurse for 3 years and work in pediatric infectious disease and I know I made a good choice by going into nursing. So I wouldn’t say I’m in it for the wrong reasons. I tend to find that coworkers don’t have much of an interest in the science behind our work of epidemiology/immunology/microbiology. What a crazy process! I filled out online application in August. I got a Zoom interview one month later. So much paperwork to fill out. We are in Illinois, so I have to complete Faith's law. Which is great-but I had to set up an account online and that took awhile. Fingerprints. Then I will need a physical. And then I will eventually need to complete GCN training. Here is the part I do not understand. They need a copy of my college transcripts. Even though I have a valid Illinois PEL. All of this for $150 per day. At a PL last month, the host made it sound like teachers should never do lectures / give direct instruction. I talked with her afterwards because that didn't seem right and yep, that's exactly what she was saying. She believes students should "lead their own education" there's no need for "I do, you do, we do" because she believes it should all be "you determine what you do." I do see where she thinks she's going, and I agree that students should have plenty of opportunities to explore independently and make mistakes without fear. ER nurse here. I don’t have much experience with kids. I knew kids hated pills, but I didn’t know they hated liquid just as much! On more than one occasion I’ve had a kid break down in tears and spit their Tylenol back up. I get it tastes yucky, and I even tried mixing it with some juice in a med cup to help with the texture and taste. I eventually had to leave mom up to the task to see my other patients because I felt like I was negotiating with a terrorist and it was taking forever 😆 Any tips on PO, IM or IV meds is so appreciated! I work in rehab, or atleast that’s what I thought. The facilities accepts all kinds of patients as long as they can pay for it, this includes dementia patients. I have a patient who got admitted after falling at home and her family believes she needs 24 hour care. She’s a fall risk with combative behaviors and it can take 2 people to keep her from throwing herself on the floor. Earlier today she punched me in the stomach, I literally felt the air leave my chest. She looked so pleased with herself and I had to immediately run out of the room. I reported it to the supervisor, they tried to get an emergency order for Ativan for agitation, however the DON didn’t approved saying we can’t medically sedate her although her POA was fine with it. I hate that these facilities allow us to be abused by these patients, and god forbid I defend myself and lose my job or license or both. Any advice for finding a more clerical nursing job? I work on a telemetry floor and I was attending to a patient who was nauseated, in pain, and had a elevated BP. Yet my other patient who wanted pain medication got irritated and complained that I didn't check up on her when I was running behind with getting her pain medication. I had ask for our resource nurse to help attend to her as well. However, by the time I got there, my charge nurse was in the room. And she complained that she called but no one came to help her. I apologized as I felt horrible. But I honestly attended to her all day and checked up on her as well. I just don't know what more I could've done. I'm an experienced RN, but I'm a hot mess upon returning recently after a long absence. I thought I was in a good headspace, and physically, I'm feeling the best I've felt in many months. Turns out, I'm not in a good headspace. I'm very quick to cry and it's really hard to stop once I'm crying. I forgot a ton of things. I like taking care of pts and feel pretty solid with that aspect. My main problem I think, is my forgetfulness. When charting, I stare at the computer screen blanking out, I don't remember where supplies are located, and all the other dynamic stuff that bedside nursing consists of. I'm very inefficient now, easily flustered and sensitive. It's so embarrassing. That makes me even more stressed and I cry more. I have good support from my manager and had a re-orientation shift. I don't know how to handle this. I don't want to get the teacher in trouble , but the classroom next door is constantly noisy - sometimes so loud that I have to close my door. I've heard shouting, occasionally curse words, and I had to go in there last week because I heard a girl screaming because someone pulled her earring off. In fact, the only time it's quiet is if the ESOL teacher is with her for third period or she is being observed. Other than that, I barely hear the teacher - it's only her second year. I have suggested some class management techniques, but she says nothing works she's tried keeping them after school and putting names on the whiteboard - it's the combination of kids and the age - 12/13 - she is used to older, more mature ages. She says she is applying for jobs in "better places" that would be a better fit. I'm 19 and I've always loved books and medical dramas as a kid as an adult. One of my favorite books from childhood is "the night shift" by dr. Brian Golding, and it made me intrigued about the medical world I've just started nursing school, and the introduction to a career in the medical field has made me revisit a lot of hospital dramas in my free time I'm obviously aware that real life is nothing like a TV show. Hi everyone, I want to know what folks do for seating charts on the first day of school. I teach high school, and usually several students per class get dropped or added, which messes with my alphabetical seating chart. I like to be organized from day one. I certainly have adapted before, but I am wondering if folks hold off on assigning seats the first day and wait one to two days after the first day of school, or just do it on day one. Yesterday was the Friday before a 3-day-weekend. I knew this was coming. I had planned for this. The students had a small quiz and then had time to finish their late assignments (9th grade). I had them test, then called over each student who was most behind and made sure they knew what assignments were needed to make up their grades. I told the class ‘I know ya‘ll are antsy to go, I need to grade your work. This is excellent time for you to get work done, but I know some of you are all caught up and others just won’t work, so just don’t get too loud or make a mess. fifteen minutes later, the room is in a reasonable state of controlled chaos. First off, teachers, please be involved with your union if you can have one. Your union doesn't "do things". Your fellow teachers are following your direction. So, one thing that has started to come up is that people can't move positions because if they the move, they move back down the seniority list. So, this disincentivizes people from moving. However, moving is the best way to improve your pay, which then forces other districts to increase pay. Without movement districts can lowball their CBA offers because they think teachers won't leave. So, please make sure your contract says years in teacher, not years in district, determines seniority. I am per diem, I get floated 35-50% of my shifts. I have noticed a pattern, particularly on the ICU step-down unit, where I am the only nurse getting an assignment of 4 patients, everyone else starts with 3, one nurse had 2, and what really pissed me off is they had someone with an 8am discharge only get 3 patients? Why not give the nurse with the pending discharge 4 patients rather than me? To make it worse, they gave me a sickle cell crisis patient. I usually have a good attitude, but today I couldn’t hide my disappointment. I’m a nursing student who just started a nursing extern position, and I’m only a few shifts in, but I’m feeling so overwhelmed and clueless. I know I’m brand new and obviously don’t expect to know everything, but I’m struggling to figure out how I’m supposed to learn when the unit is so busy. My preceptor is currently precepting a GN as well, and I feel like a lot of his attention naturally goes toward her. She’s obviously further along and needs more direct teaching, so I completely understand why. But it means I don’t always have much to learn from the situation. First year nursing student and having trouble studying for fundamentals. I passed Pathophysiology and pharmacology with As and my study method was studying with flashcards with the 6 components of each disease/medicine. (Etiology, Pathogenesis, Morphological Changes, Clinical Manifestations, Complications and Prognosis,Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications) (MOA, use, Pharmacokinetics, Contraindications, Side Effects & Adverse Reactions, and Nursing Interventions & Patient Education) I would use these flashcards as foundation and use practice question to apply my knowledge. But for fundamental I feel like there isn't a SET structure I can study it and feel like I'm studying the wrong thing. I also do practice questions. Recently joined a new team of teachers at a school I've worked at for years with virtually no problems. However, since joining their team it seems like everyday they have problems with me and are usually putting me on blast in front of other teachers. For example, from that team, 3 teachers during lunch questioned why my kids weren't done with i ready even though they were still testing within the allotted time. They get two weeks and it was a week and a half at that point. They were tired of having to change the schedule to test and wanted to resume regular classes but half my guys still didn't finish math (even though they were still supposed to get the rest of that week) so I remarked they were just taking their time and they responded that their kids also took their time and were done, then another chimed in how theirs are also done. My seniors have had a weird schedule the past couple weeks. As a result of them being in and out, I gave...gasp...a packet for this week. It had a lot of small tasks and was easy to do in small chunks. They were THRILLED. They literally thanked me and talked about how they were tired of the talking and "cute" stuff and we're glad to just have some work they could get done and be done with it. They were more on task than they have been for an entire month. Most of them didn't even try and use AI. Nearly 100% rate of completion. Just a thought with all these "engagement" strategies. They also scored nearly double on their quiz than the classes that did what was on the pacing guide. I’m having such a hard time coping with this. So last year I started two weeks into the school year when the original teacher had to go on long term sick leave (she never was able to come back still even this year). It was 4/5 split, 32 students, great admin support but just way too many behaviour issues that took 5-6months to really correct and even then they weren’t perfect when they left me. I keep seeing comments of people criticizing teachers who complain about AI use saying that we are not making assignments “AI proof”. I’m genuinely wondering what this looks like in theory. Most of my assignments involve giving students sources like articles, audios and data 📊. I add open ended comprehension questions to avoid them guessing on multiple choice questions. I’m honestly dying of stress right now because everything I’m reading is saying that my school not being nationally accredited will mean I could get rejected from sitting in the NCLEX. Not just that, but I’m told I wouldn’t even get hired? My school wanted to expand their health care programs beyond LVN, LVN-ADN, and CNA. They’re a great community college and known for high NCLEX pass rates and good education, but since we have a new dean and this new program, accreditation hasn’t been set. Hi everyone, I’m facing a bit of a dilemma and I’m wondering what I should do. I just started nursing school and I’m in an ADN program at a CC. I’ve also been a tech for a little over a year and I’m a part time employee, which grants me $5,000 a year for education. I’ve gotten 5k so far and plan to have them cover 5k for my tuition this semester. I would also be expected to work here for 2 years after I obtain my license. However, I am planning on doing an externship this coming summer and with that, I’d drop to per diem for my tech job. However, I’d lose my benefits and I would be expected to pay my workplace back. By then I’d owe them $10,000. I was really hoping to secure an externship in a different hospital system in my state (NJ). I really hate where I live and it’s always been my goal to relocate up north closer to the city. My ideal plan would’ve been to secure the externship next summer then work there as a new grad.
