sharps mail back program for home infusion services, what are small providers using?

i am helping set up a small mobile nursing team offering home infusion services, and figuring out the waste disposal side has been way more frustrating than expected. traditional waste haulers keep trying to lock us into multi year contracts with expensive monthly minimums, which does not make financial sense for a small startup team doing home visits where waste volume fluctuates week to week. a nurse practitioner i spoke with suggested using a sharps mail back program so we can just ship out containers on a pay as you go basis without any recurring retainers. for those running small independent home health or infusion setups, have you found mail in programs to be reliable for compliance, or is there another flexible option i should look into? submitted by /u/Yarshon-Antonello [link] [comments]

Cath Lab RNs — how bad is the call/schedule really? Houston Methodist/memorial hermann locations

I’m an RN with a little over 3 years of experience. My background is mainly Med-Surg/IMU/step-down and currently have experience in cath lab post recovery for a year now. I’m considering making the jump into the actual Cath Lab, but the biggest thing holding me back honestly isn’t the clinical side ..it’s the schedule and CALL 😭. I really value having my days off actually be my days off and I’m worried about getting burned out from being on call, getting called in overnight, weekends, staying late for cases, etc. For anyone who works Cath Lab, especially at Houston Methodist locations (Baytown would be even better) any feedback? I’m also considering Cardiac Diagnostics because that seems like it may give me the cardiac/procedural environment I like without as much of the call lifestyle. For anyone familiar with Cardiac Diagnostics ..feedback too? I’m trying to figure out if going into Cath Lab or cardiac diagnostics is worth sacrificing the predictable schedule I really want. 😭 submitt

ADN Nursing Skills Classes & Check-offs

I've recently been accepted into an ADN program at my community college and I would like to know how they do nursing skills classes and check-offs. Do they teach it in a boot-camp style with only 3 days to practice in class? Do they give you 30 minutes to complete your check-offs? Do they give you the whole semester to learn and practice nursing skills before being sent to clinicals? I'm asking because I've heard that in BSN programs they teach it in a boot camp style in a short amount of time (3 days) so they can send you off to do your clinicals. I'm worried about failing nursing skills check-off since I'm not a fast, hands-on learner. Do you have any advice or tips to succeed in these classes? submitted by /u/LoyalCalavera [link] [comments]

Don't go to Galen, what's next?

My boyfriend was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in May. He was set to graduate in January from his LVN program at Galen (Houston), but due to the accident had to take a quarter off. Long story short, even though he withdrew correctly and explained his circumstances (and was in good standing), he will not be able to attend next quarter. This is even after the readmissions team said to resend his application through after they realized they had marked him as purposefully missing class (even though he got into a car accident and withdrew the day he was discharged from the hospital). I know Galen doesn't have a great reputation, but it's insane to me given the circumstances that it's so difficult to return. After everything he's been through in the last few months, I want nothing more for him than to go back to normal life. Any programs that anybody knows that he could look into? I never received my supplies and was told not to ask about them

I swear it’s always something new with these people. I never received the classroom supplies I ordered through the school, and when I asked about it, I was told “Don’t ask about the supplies. We will discuss it at a later date.” It’s been weeks and still no supplies. To be fair, I’m not a homeroom teacher, but I still definitely need basic supplies to do my job efficiently. And yet, when I ask for simple things like paper clips and staples from the office (that I should’ve gotten with my supplies) they look at me like I’m stupid. I just want my rubber bands and manila folders. submitted by /u/JackfruitGlad1666 [link] [comments]

CA teachers, chime in. Is it a bad time to move schools?

I’m currently teaching at a charter in Los Angeles. Our school has had massive budget cuts due to low enrollment etc. I’ve been at this school my entire teaching career (4 years) and it’s been great but I just feel like it’s my time to move on. However, I’m worried that if I leave, I’m leaving behind that tiny bit of seniority at my current school. Whatever new school I go to I would be the newest one and first on the chopping block if that district/school needs to let go of teachers. What do y’all think? Stay because my job is secure (for now) or move on? submitted by /u/whoisthis0022 [link] [comments]

Bad start at new school

I am fucked. I started at a new school this year and it has been about a month. I was in my last school for 10 years. I was told today that I have to turn things around in the next week or two. I am super stressed. It is in a new district and a different curriculum and a different batch of kids. I am worried and pissed and want to cry (or worse) and I am just frustrated. I wanted a fresh start at a new school and a new district. OMG. fuck my life. I get advice from my colleagues in my department and the instructional coach is also giving me bad advice. I am just speechless. If it doesn't work out at this school, I think I am going to be done with teaching. submitted by /u/IneligibleLand [link] [comments]

9/11 Anniversary. What happens at your school?

This year is a big anniversary of 9/11. As a Canadian teacher at the elementary level we don’t reference it. It impacted me greatly as an adult and witnessing it all unfold was horrific. That said, I am aware that I am almost fifty and was a full adult when it happened. My own teen children know what happened but don’t really grasp the magnitude as they are removed from it. What happens at elementary schools in the states around remembering this tragedy? Will different things or more happen this year? Edit: I am very surprised to learn nothing happens. What do you do for Remembrance Day/Veterans Day? Are historical major events not honoured or recognized? submitted by /u/GenXMom14 [link] [comments]

Just got CUT and I’m sad

I just entered my third year teaching art at a HS. My first year was a breeze my second was rough and so far this year has been better. Last year one of our art teachers was cut because of population decline. So we went from four to three teachers. Last night my department head said that they got an email from principle about a las min meeting about fall leveling. There’s no way it’s gonna be one of us right? We just got knocked down to three teachers this year. Welp, not only was it one of us but it was ME! I got called into the principles office and said that I could finish off the year but my position has been cut. I didn’t realize how SAD I would be. I immediately started crying when I left the office and spent my planning period crying. I started my career here. It hasn’t always been easy but I love my team and knowing I won’t be here next year made me so sad. But the numbers for our school are dropping and there’s nothing I can do. I’m afraid I won’t find a good position next yea

New Grad looking for some positivity

Had to have a meeting with my nurse manager and clinical instructor this morning because the ICU nurse I was shadowing didn't want me back. That's a story for another day. A lot took place and was said during this meeting and I have no intention of writing a lengthy post. So that said, some of the key takeaways is that my manager has made clear that every move I make going forward is going to be watched and scrutinized. My preceptor and/or I have to check-in multiple times during the week to see how I'm doing. I didn't feel supported. My job was threatened and someone spread a lie about me applying to a rival hopsital, which I'm not. And though the nurse manager "apologized" for their source being misinformed. They didn't seem convinced that I was telling the truth. I was essentially told that I now have 4-months to get my act together or else. To be clear those exact words weren't used, but the message was clear. That all being said, I could just use some positivity as I feel very def

financial/long term career regrets from going part time?

long post short, I posted in some finance subreddits about going part time after maternity leave. I've been a nurse for 5 years at the same hospital, I'm 7 months pregnant, currently work 3 12s in float pool, can make my own schedule, no weekend or holiday requirement. My MIL will watch baby one day a week. Essentially, after paying for 2 days a week for daycare I would be left with about the same amount of money as I would be going part time. I still get all the perks of my job, benefits (insurance will cost a little more but it's going to be more anyways with adding baby), and 401k match with going part time, just to make it work would probably work some weekend shifts. A large portion of the responses I got were that it would be a big mistake to go part time career wise regarding saving for retirement, missing out on career opportunities, promitions or raises, and that the gross income would still look better when it comes to eventually buying a house, regardless of the childcare ex

New nursing student panic... help!

Without going too much into detail, I just started nursing school and I'm fully spiraling. For context, I'm an early-30s student changing careers, already have a B.A. that I obtained right out of college, attending a nights/weekends ADN program while working full time on a traditional 9-5 type schedule. I'm only about a week and a half into the program, and I knew this was going to be hard, but already feel like I'm drowning. I have always been an excellent student, done well in school, and a great test-taker. But I'm already starting to question whether I'm doing the right thing here. My primary professor for our skills class doesn't really teach/lecture at all, expects over 200 pages of reading per week, and seems to assume we all have some kind of medical background (I don't), so I already feel lost. I signed up for this program knowing nursing school was hard, but thinking a traditional track ADN would be more manageable than a BSN or accelerated track while working, but it really

How badly did I mess up

I was precepting a new grad. And we gave 2 units of blood used blood tubing and had to give platelet and I approved using REGULAR IV TUBING. Was caught by another nurse ( pt went to procedure). I’m in the ICU. They wrote an incident report which is understandable. I feel so horrible it’s eating me every time I think of it. I feel so ashamed when I see my preceptee and also the manager. I’m not sure why and how I thought it was ok. I truly didn’t know. It’s scary I know. It’s Joe ingrained in my brain to never do that and the reasons why. I don’t give a lot of platelets. Should I step away from precepting? I’m thinking of asking because of this. I just got my CCRN and I enjoyed learning and studying. I enjoy teaching too. Now I’m scared. How badly did I F up? Ps: my manager didn’t mention me not precepting I’m just asking if I didn’t know/remember this basic skill/knowledge, how am I to precept? submitted by /u/FoxEfficient785 [link] [comments]

Working for LA County as a LVN

Hello all. I currently work for Kaiser in Socal as an LVN II making $39/hr. I’ve been working for Kaiser for 1 year now. Last year I applied to LA County for their LVN I position when I was job hunting and I landed an interview at LA General hospital but I was so nervous during the interview that I completely bombed it and I was told they decided not to move forward and then I landed a job at Kaiser as a new grad. I’ve always wanted to work for county so I reapplied again yesterday. Anyone here have pros and cons working as a LVN for county? If a job at county was to line up for me would I be making a mistake by leaving kaiser? The pay is great at Kaiser and the work is pretty easy, I don’t have anything bad to say about it but working for LA county also seems like a great opportunity. submitted by /u/cocoabutterkissez [link] [comments]

Teaching 7 children

I've been teaching ELA/History for 8 years - all in a regular public middle school. Now I'm in a high school. One of its selling points is that it has low class sizes. Usually this is good - my average class has 15 kids. Those are fantastic, really the perfect size. BUT - my first period has 7 children. 7. Children. They are freshmen. They do not talk at all. I can get one or two kids to volunteer sometimes but overall I am teaching to complete silence, blank faces. Has anyone taught a class like this? It's ELA, not an elective, so I need to get through content and I rely on collaborative work/discussions. These have been going great in my other classes but I am literally talking to myself and answering my own questions all the time in this period. I've tried the painful silence and I would be waiting until the next period if I stuck to it. Does anyone have any advice for teaching such a small number of kids that won't engage? submitted by /u/Realistic-Average-15 [link] [comments]

I’m not even a teacher yet and I already want out. Is it time to change my degree?

I am a current student teacher, for elementary school. I used to love being in the classroom, thought "I was put on this planet to teach". However, I cannot bring myself to like it anymore. It mostly started when I got punched by a student, to which no consequences were enforced. After that, I saw many things I don't like: no admin support, extreme and violent behaviors, kids swearing at teachers, overbearing parents, etc. Again, I am a STUDENT teacher, so not even my career yet. Whenever, I go into my student teaching placement, I just want to cry and cannot get out of my car. When I am in the classroom, I have to hold back tears because of how much I've grown to dislike teaching, and don't want to be there. In my program/collage, I feel so alone since everyone else is so excited to teach. I just don't know if this is something I need to push through. I have this passion towards wild animals where I want to get a degree in that instead. But it doesn't pay as much, so then I circle bac

Evaluating the impact of a gambling harm focused educational intervention on medical students' self-reported confidence: a non-randomised, single-group pre-post study

Background Gambling harm is a significant public health concern that is systematically under-recognised in clinical practice. Despite the recent inclusion of gambling disorder in the General Medical Council's Medical Licensing Assessment content map, gambling harm has been largely absent from undergraduate medical education in the United Kingdom, and structured evaluations of gambling harm teaching delivered to medical students have not, to our knowledge, been reported. Methods A single-group, pre-post study of a teaching session on gambling harm was conducted across three sequential cohorts of Year 4 medical students at King's College London during the 2025-2026 academic year. Outcome measures were collected immediately after the teaching with no follow-up. The session was delivered online by Gambling Harm UK, a registered UK charity, and comprised lived experience testimony and teaching with public health and clinical components. Self-reported confidence across six domains was assess

Should a student who is autistic but also from a Spanish speaking home be in ESOL?

I have a 1st grade student in my class this year who is autistic, has an IEP and receives a lot of services in and out of class. He is not really able to participate/follow along with the class except for brief moments with adult support. He will wander around and attempt to leave the room. Often has to be taken out of the room to calm down. I was told he was “nonverbal” but he will say single words in Spanish. His family speaks only Spanish and meetings have to be with a translator. When I asked about why he wasn’t in ESOL, I was told that they attempted to test him in both prek and kindergarten, but he refused to participate in testing both time and so they didn’t have the data to support it. Recent new grads blaming new grads for organizational problems (in class…)

Had a wtf moment in class today. (I’m in a DNP program, been RN x 8 years). There are some fresh nurses with 2-3 years experience (some who became NPs fast and are back for DNP or some who are in a BSN to DNP program). Some of the NPs just graduated and haven’t even found a job yet which is fine but like come on prof asked what are some organizational issues that cause domino effect of problems Ok first of all…. Let’s think THE MILLIONS OF PROBLEMS that happen as a result of organizational policies that kinda cause more problems than good (overtime rules, staffing ratio, budget, contracts, turnover, blah blah the list goes ON AND ON AND ON AND ON FOR ETERNITY). There was someone who is a nursing director and she mentioned issues with retention because obviously it cost a lot of money to train new staff, especially new grads. The freshly new grads then said the ROOT CAAUSE of unit turnover was bc new grads are burdensome bc they don’t know policies or unit norms yet. Mind you they were

Why can't these kids use computers??

I teach college general chemistry lab, and I have for years. Its always fun to see the different struggles each round of kids has. This year though, I am just confused. The first lab of the semester is just using microsoft excel since they will have to do that many times through the semester. I usually get the same (super valid) excel usage questions. This time though, I have gotten the following questions more than once: How do i save an excel file How do i know where I saved my excel file What do you mean 'email the file to yourself' I am like umm.... how does one reach college and not know this? For context, the emailing a file to myself one was because a student did the excel work in class on a shared lab computer, but needed to complete it at home and needed her excel sheet to be transferred to her personal computer. I think I have been doing this since middle school and like was never taught, I just figured it out? This same student also was unsure how to log into her email. Bonu

Finally Free

I left the school I was at because after three weeks I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and my administration was giving me such wizardly advice as sending a TA into there who told me one thing, with the school telling me another. I can't make this shit up. So I finally resigned. My mental health got to the point I was worried I might hurt myself. It was so bad I couldn't go in to hand in the resignation in person, just to fill out the form online. I also wrote a letter to my principal, trying to tell them that I am sure she is wonderful but we were not a good match and it's better to part now. My assistant principal said she was sad to see me go and I needed to take care of my mental health. My principal, the one I wrote the letter to, the one who called herself the princiPAL told me I didn't need to send her a letter and I should follow the official channels, otherwise not acknowledging the fact this job had made me suicidally depressed. What's the harshest/"most real" thing you've said to a patient and/or their family? How did they respond?

I'm one of those nurses who struggles a lot with confronting patients and/or their families, mainly because I'm conflict-averse but also because I'm scared of getting in trouble (aka getting reported to mgmt by the pt/family, and mgmt caring more about patient satisfaction than anything). Also, this question doesn't necessarily only have to be about patients/families who are manipulative/demanding, though I know many times that's the cause for having to lay down the law. Dismissed from program: I feel so stupid right now.

I failed Med-Surg by 1% and was dismissed from my BSN program. I was halfway through and supposed to graduate in December 2027, so I’m devastated, embarrassed, and angry with myself. I cried to my mom yesterday, and she encouraged me to look at other schools instead of giving up. Now I’m considering an LVN or ADN program at a community college because I just want to become a nurse and start working already. I’m 36, and I think that’s making this hit even harder. I want more kids, I want to continue my education, and I feel like I’m losing valuable years. Has anyone here failed out or been dismissed from a nursing program and still became a nurse? Nurse Educator - Manager seems adamant I work varied shifts.

Hey r/Nursing . Two years ago I applied for a part time position on night shift as a nurse educator. It seemed too good to be true. 20 hrs a week, flexible shifts, and self scheduled time. I had at the time a 2 year old and knew at some point I'd have another baby on the way. Fast forward to now and my now 3 year old is in day care part time, and me and my wife watch the baby on alternating days. Due to family constraints and now a reduced pay, I work only Monday and Tuesdays. It just works right now with family life. However, my manager for the last year has been nagging me to vary my shifts during the week but I can't. Now she wants this in writing for some reason that I need to work fixed shifts and I'm not even sure why? When I interviewed I made sure to ask what shift times were expected, what days, etc and the response was always whatever you want as long as it is over night. So, what happened to that? I've asked why it's so important that I vary my shifts and I'm told for greate

Coworker made inappropriate comments after pap smear

I don’t work here anymore but I had a coworker that was genuinely a creep. I’m talking a 37 year old man that would rub the shoulders of the 22 year old MA and ask her to go on dates. Now, every time this man had anything to do with a woman patient, it would make me uneasy and make me feel like I had to step in and do whatever he was going to do (small outpatient physicians office). This one time in particular he did his first pap smear on a woman who was in her early 20s and came out after and said it was “so hot, the best experience ever, she had the nicest anatomically perfect vagina he had ever seen, he can’t wait to do more pap smears”. From that point forward I would genuinely feel like throwing up when I saw him. Our nurse manager gave him a small slap on the wrist but otherwise nothing came of it. And he is in school to become an NP! Not all men, but always a man. submitted by /u/serendipitysprout [link] [comments]

I’m an LPN doing 1:1 pediatric nursing, and I’m seriously considering asking my agency to move me to another case. I need outside opinions because I don’t know if I’m just emotionally overwhelmed today or if this case has genuinely become too much. My client is a young, nonverbal child with a G-tube who can have very significant aggressive behaviors. I’ve been hit, kicked, scratched, bitten, had my hair pulled, and have had skin broken more than once. She can also throw things, throw herself to the floor, scream, attempt to elope, and become extremely physical when redirected or when something is upsetting her. I understand that these behaviors are part of her needs, and I’ve continued working through them and trying to figure out triggers rather than blaming her. The issue is that I’m starting to feel like there’s very little consideration for me as the nurse outside of what the family needs. My scheduled hours are 7:30 AM–4:00 PM. There have been times Mom has wanted or expected me t

Exhausted with bedside

Utterly exhausted and only 2 out of 3 shifts. Last 2 consecutive shifts had me running from one room to another. Patients needy and complaining despite me going above for them. Everyone needs me at the same time and expects me there within 2 minutes. Plus I'm not only handing out their meds but also their damn refreshments! Not to mention I feel like some of the Patients purposely talk your ear off and take up so much of your time when you go in. Like dude I'm in here every 2 hours. You're not my only patient. I think I'm getting burned out on people and being social. This bedside work is physically and mentally draining. submitted by /u/randomthings2024 [link] [comments]

Upset athlete parents

I have had constant issues with athletes being disrespectful and out of control in my classroom since the first day of school. I have tried contacting the parents- some respond saying they will speak to the child, others don't respond entirely. No matter what, the behavior still persists. Recently, I got so tired of it, that I emailed their coach with a few student names and the coach ended up making them all sit out their first game. The parents are upset and now it's escalated to admin and the athletic manager. I'm so stressed out about it and don't know where to go from here. Is this a normal thing that happens? I've been teaching for a few years and this by far is the worst parent reactions I've had. They have accused me of picking on their child, not contacting them before speaking to the coach, etc. I'm beside myself and now am second guessing ever reaching out. Please help with advice and/or similar experiences! Am I going to be labeled as a teacher that can't control her class

Are the rumors about how behind kids are true or just blown out of proportion?

43f Florida USA I'm looking in to becoming a teacher and the news and former teachers are scaring the crap out of me with the horror stories. Yes I know the stories are true but how much of the norm are they? Is this just a distillation of the worst of the worst or is it wise spread? Are the stories of seniors not being able to read widespread or taken out of context? Basically don't sugar coat it but also don't tell me only the worst of the worst. Can I get a realistic picture of what kids are actually like today? 6 thru 12 I can't do elementary because I can't do all subjects. submitted by /u/Q8DD33C7J8 [link] [comments]

First Year Teacher; cannot maintain this schedule

Hello. I am feeling completely unprepared and unequipped to do this and I’m only a few weeks in. If I feel this way so soon how will I feel in six months? I did the traditional route, got my BSed, did my student teaching, etc. I was looking forward to the career change. But now I have 5 different preps. I teach 15 85 minute classes a week, 13 of which are different classes. I do not have the skills to deliver 13 different lessons effectively a week, some of which are honors or IB II HL classes, which are easier classroom management wise but require more out of class refresher time on my part. I worked hard to get here but I do not think I could agree to do this another year. Has anyone else gone through this? submitted by /u/ACWhi [link] [comments]

sentinel event on the floor

I’m a travel nurse currently on assignment at a hospital in the Northwest. Recently, we had a sentinel event on the floor, and I wanted to ask people who have been through something similar how these situations usually play out. It wasn’t my patient and it didn’t even happen on my shift. Basically, the patient was relatively healthy, with some minor health issues who was admitted for elective procedure. His vitals weren’t taken on time, the required safety checks weren’t done, and the ordered telemetry was never put on. When the patient went into cardiac arrest for a reason unrelated to the diagnosis, nobody knew. By the time he was found, it was too late. The nurse is now blaming the tech for not getting the vitals and not putting on the telemetry. The tech is 18, had just graduated high school, and had literally just finished orientation. The nurse has more than 15 years of experience and was a travel nurse for many years. What bothers me the most is how the nurse seems to be acting

Kid STILL sitting in calm down corner all day but is wily when we're ready for recess. I'm lost.

When I ask what is wrong, he shrugs his shoulders and says really nothing. What do I do???? I emailed his parents about this exact thing Tuesday, adding in both positives and this "negative", and no response. I love my kids and I feel so much empathy for them but it stops at a point. I'm happy to change what I'm doing but I don't know WHAT to do now. I have 20 other students who are very needy. I hold him to very high standards like any other student and make sure to acknowledge when he is doing positive things like being kind or meeting expectations. Yesterday I spoke with him with another teacher to see how she would hold the conversation, she asked him if it would help him if I spoke with him every morning to see how he's doing. He said yes. This morning I made sure to talk to him extra, when we were in the class I quietly pulled him aside and said hi, good morning, asked how he was feeling (as in emotions), what he had for breakfast, etc. He answered all the questions. He worked wi

Started nursing over 40 what the Fuck did I get my self into.

Hi there, I just wanted to vent a little bit and see what kind of opinions I could get. I started nursing at 44. I waited a long time to be able to devote my time for the studies that it takes to become a nurse. I bought into it all. How hard it was to become one well this must be an amazing career, right? I can't believe how little voice you have as a nurse in regards to helping to change systems to make things better for patients. I can't believe the gas lighting, the gatekeeping, the clicks, the mean girlness, and the outright disrespect for a patient's rights and autonomy that I have seen since I have been a nurse. Oh I have spoken up and it has gotten me in trouble. I have been let go twice now. It's very frustrating. I'm 47 now and I've never experienced one being fired second politics that come along with nursing. It just ridiculous Thinking that you're going to be valued, you're going to feel like you've really changed somebody's life , when really we have all the of the accoun

As an introvert, I think I would be having a rather miserable time as a student these days

The forced forming relationships with staff would absolutely irritate me to no end. I’m not talking about asking how my day was going or saying good morning in a cheerful tone. I was watching our assistant principal (who is 100% about appearances and never says what he’s really thinking, just passive aggressive if he wants you to know he’s mad) giving fist bumps to every single kid walking into the school, and one of them obviously was not into it, and he was all in his face DON’T LEAVE ME HANGING!!! Sometimes kids want to be left alone and it’s not for any reason other than they just want to be left alone. Not all of them want to be engaging with adults and building relationships every moment of the day. submitted by /u/Last_Hunt_7022 [link] [comments]

FYI: I don’t think “Bricked” is the word to use for tech that doesn’t work anymore…

Yesterday my work laptop stopped working during a class and I exclaimed that it was “bricked!” (which was word that I had always heard used colloquially to describe technology that was only useful as a solid, heavy, roughly cube shape object…like a brick)….yeah, it means something different now… submitted by /u/DuanePickens [link] [comments]
