We recently had a bunch of falls on my floor and my manager is already a huge hard ass about making sure all bed alarms are on and patients aren’t getting up unassisted. My manager is now saying that ALL patients must be supervised in the bathroom, even independent patients. How do they think this is even feasible? If someone slams the door in my face what do they want me to do bust the door down? Had another day that makes me want to get out of healthcare. I have been a nurse for 30 years and burned out. Tired of the system, the constant complaints, admin, providers and other staff. Have any nurses made a career change out of healthcare? Any careers that can pay close to a 6 figure salary? I can take a small reduction in salary but cant make it on $50k a year at my age. Hi so I am in my first year of nursing school, and im getting my BSN. If you include pre-reqs, I am considered a third year. So my first ever nursing classes that I take this semester include fundamentals, health assessment, research, and integrative clinical strategies. From my understanding, research does not seem like the most tedious and stress inducing class. It is for the most part all group work with few reading quizzes. The lecture itself was horrendous for sure. It was 3 hrs long, but it actually could have gone for more. I already have to study for a quiz next week. Integrative clinical is a clinical class as well as lab skills combined into one grade/course. I find out more tomorrow and am too scared to check the syllabus. I have clinical Tuesday, and a lab skills day Friday. For fundamentals and health assessment, i have 5 exams each for both classes including the final. That is so unfamiliar to me. Preface this by saying I teach elementary, but I just attended my son's elementary curriculum night for parents, not the school where I work. He's in 4th and for some reason the 4th grade team gave a team presentation in the library, the rest of the grades each give it in the classroom with only your kids' teacher. Whatever. So they're tag teaming the slides, all 5 4th grade teachers, and with about 5 minutes left in the allotted first session, an admin comes over the school PA to announce something. One of the teachers is giving her presentation, and instead of pausing so we could all hear the announcement, she just raises her voice and keeps talking over the announcement! We're in the library, maybe 80 parents gathered, and now I can't pay any attention to the lady getting louder, and I can't understand a word of the announcement over her. Hahahaha now like. I don’t know if this is a call for help or I should analyze this but. I had the weekend off. I asked all my friends even very far acquaintances if anyone’s doing anything. Nope all busy. So I had 0 plans. I thought about how lame that was and yeah I could enjoy the weekend off or, my best friends working nights … so what do I do… Swap my 2 day shifts Monday Tue next week to add 2 nights onto my Friday Saturday. We are getting a new building next year so the budget on this one is essentially zero. We know it's black mold; a few of my coworkers have run at-home kits and it's bad bad. When the roof leaks the ceiling tiles come down and sometimes also cause major flooding. We've had to cancel school due to flooding. They are always painting over our ceiling tiles with killz to cover the grey/brown spots. We are a public school. Anyway, I wasn't sick over the summer at all. Last school year, however, I was fever-sick most of the time. Coming into school with 100°f+ fevers because I was out of sick days. And guess what? We are at the end of the second week and I'm sick AGAIN. I suspect the exposure to the mold is killing my immunity. I'm also losing my hair because of how often I'm sick, and I just feel incredibly run down. ALL of the staff is struggling with this. Our reading curriculum is Imagine Learning which has first graders learning about birds for FIVE months straight. The lessons are ridiculous and ask 6 year olds to follow a series of five step directions and requires a minimum of 3+ anchor charts per lesson. Our district is obsessed with this curriculum. They have children using a Frayer model and doing close reads for 100 minutes on one text. First grade. The handwriting tells them to thrust their rockets forward and orbit planet O. 😵💫 Our math curriculum has no modeling or explicit teaching, jumps around, and expects students to know how to sort data without telling them anything. You give them a T chart and Venn diagram and they’re supposed to figure it out themselves. Took an exam today, after we’re done we leave the computer lab and go back to class or on break until everyone is done. Today we walked in after an exam and all just gave a “wtf was that?” look and laughed entirely too hard. Today one of my team members asked if we could all meet as a team of four. I figured it was to go over anything I needed to know for back-to-school night next week. Since my new school is way more organized and busy than my old school, I've been feeling a little overwhelmed with the outside of classroom stuff. In the class, things have been going well. The kids are working, we're having good class discussions, and I'm branching out more with how I teach things since my kids are pretty high. Turns out the whole meeting was because I wasn't stamping the kids planners each day and not responding to group texts. Half the time they're sending texts I'm either organizing stuff for the day, teaching, or the text doesn't have anything to do with me. How soon is too soon to switch jobs? I have had two jobs in the past 2 years, both in different states due to me moving. I unfortunately am wanting to move to a different state again, but got push back from some of my friends that you “don’t want to change jobs too often!” I know I should look into traveling, but do you agree or disagree with this statement? Y'all I just want to know your thoughts on this, because as an ED RN I've had this happen multiple times... Patient (completely A&O, bed bound, and ~450lb): "I have to shit." Me: "okay let me get a bedpan." Patient: "absolutely not, I hate those things. I'm just gonna shit in the bed and I'll let you know when I'm ready to be cleaned up." Me: "if you actively choose to shit yourself as a grown woman who lives independently at baseline with no injuries impeding you, I will not be cleaning you up. You can clean yourself up, or you can use the bedpan I'm offering you." I have zero issues cleaning patients, that's a huge part of being a nurse. After some rooms got swapped at the start of the year, I saw that an empty room had tables where students could comfortably sit in pairs. We currently have these… triangle desks? Imagine a right triangle, and students sit at the hypotenuse. It’s awful and I hate it. Anyways, I got 15 tables swapped for my 30 desks today! I LOVE IT. I can comfortably walk between rows and pairs instead of having these students twist their bodies to look at the board in clusters of 4. Everyone is facing forward, everyone has a partner. Just feeling discouraged already. I got a 68 on a quiz today and didnt submit the correct ati module format and the instructor never messaged to clarify if she was still going to give me credit since it is the first 2 weeks.. that was on 2 assignments. Feeling overwhelmed. The ati module lessons are so much reading. Like 5 hours a piece.. it just isn't feasible. Im not great at math and screwed up on the math quiz today. For context, I (20F), am a dedicated substitute teacher at a middle school. Luckily, my school is pretty lax when it comes to pants, and my go to comfort pants in winter are flare leggings. I just went back to work yesterday, and GOD is it humid and disgusting (East coast). I deal with hyperhidrosis, and I’m quickly realizing that polyester won’t work for me in this weather. It also doesn’t help that our a/c doesn’t kick in until an hour after the children arrive. I’m sick of coming home with an odor that i can smell halfway through the day. I’ve looked for cotton leggings, NONE OF THEM HAVE POCKETS! I can’t seem to find any option with a breathable fabric & pockets that aren’t sweatpants. They are, in fact, sixth graders. I just wrapped up a 45-minute class with them. This is the second week of school. They know the routines. They know the expectations. They cannot function independently. At all. The smallest, easiest directions require hand-holding for them. Even something as simple as "get out a piece of loose leaf" will be met with multiple hands raised, multiple questions, complete helplessness as to how to overcome this impossible task. I noticed after the government cut billions from healthcare that some hospitals have been making some changes. After some rich board members have met later on people started getting fired for really dumb reasons. A lot of the people getting fired have high salaries and no complaints against them. I am kind of shitting my pants here and looking for any advice and insight. Can you guys tell me what your second semester clinical entailed and what the day to day tasks looked like? Did you have adequate help and supervision? what skills should I make sure I have nailed down before? What was expected of you? We will be at med-surg once a week for 8 hours starting week 1. We will be assigned a patient and just expected to be their “RN” for that shift and perform all RN duties. We will be primarily alone. We were told we just need someone per policy when passing meds or transferring. Our instructor will be around to help, but there is 10 of us and I know how hard to track down she will be. Hey everyone, I’m looking for some real-world advice from nurses/nursing students, especially anyone in Southern California or San Diego. I’m 25 and already have a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology (pre-PT) from SDSU with about a 3.5 GPA. I’m currently a licensed EMT working in EMS and have decided that I want to pursue nursing. Most of my nursing prerequisites are already completed from my first degree and I’m currently figuring out which programs make the most sense financially and career-wise. Originally I was looking heavily at accelerated/second-degree BSN programs like SDSU, CSUSM and National University. The problem is cost. SDSU’s accelerated second bachelor's program alone is around $75k in tuition. I don't have that kind of money available, and because I already have a bachelor's, my financial aid options are more limited. That has me seriously considering a community college ADN program at somewhere like Palomar or MiraCosta, passing the exam and becoming an RN, then completi
