I’ve lived a life that I never really expected to have a “real job” and have tattooed my body accordingly. However, recently I have decided I want to do something different with my life and, after much consideration, have settled on nursing as the path I wish to pursue. I know this is apparently common and I wanted to know how you guys who've experienced this cope with it. It's my first time in the O.R, basically I was about to serve the gloves to the doctor, but the doctor got really frustrated and snatched it out of my hands and the whole time throughout the surgery she just ranted about how I should just drop out, asking why I was still there and that I should just leave the room because I clearly have no skills. She wouldn't let me pass her any of the instruments, she'd just toss it back on the mayo table, told the scrub nurse supervising me not to let me help because she didn't trust me enough to be competent. So I just stood there the entire time just listening to her. I'm just thankful I didn't cry on the spot. How do you guys cope with this. I graduated with my BSN in May and passed NCLEX in June and have been applying since and I’m still stuck at the nursing home I’ve worked at since I was a CNA in nursing school. I’m trying so hard to get out of the nursing home and into acute care, I’ve applied to the only 3 hospitals near me on several different units and nothing so far. Everything else is a 2+ hour drive and I can’t afford to relocate. I’ve put in so many applications and have only had 2 interviews. One was a new grad ICU position where they strung me along for weeks, contacted all my references and had me doing education modules online just for them to stop responding to me and send me an email saying they picked someone else. The second interview I had today and I don’t feel like it went well. The lady interviewing me came across almost robotic. Failed on a speciality I’m not even interested in, now I’ll be put back about 8 months (if I even pass the remaining courses lol). Substitute taught at a private school in a gifted class yesterday, observations so far: * Every single child brought a pencil and was essentially on task all day. * Routines are well oiled machines. Phones go in a small jail at the start of the day, but most of the times even this isn't necessary as they just keep them in their lockers. Admin is extremely supportive and encouraging! * Attendance is itself done via swipe cards and is taller automatically. The swipe cards serve dual purpose as student IDs and Hall Passes (left at the front when using washroom). Perhaps the dream of curriculum compaction is well and alive. Most students also had tutors to further reinforce their academics. I've done nutrition already, had chem from my first degree and am about to do an online A&P1 but I feel like I'm still so far away from completing all my prereqs for an ABSN (8 prereqs required). I refinanced my private student loan to a servicer that offers in-school deferment and have a fair amount of savings. I've tried to apply to lots of PCA and CNA trainee jobs with no luck yet. While staying in my current job is ideal in the sense that I can save up money while paying for prereqs out of pocket, I just don't know if I can do it mentally. This is year 15 for me and I think it gets a little bit worse every year. I know kindergarteners are little, but they really should be past the screaming the way toddlers do for a really long time. I just had hall duty and legitimately it sounded like we had an infant in the cafeteria. I’m not referring to a child with special needs either. Also children who refused to walk and adults resort to carrying them around again, not special needs. And it’s not as though it stops at kindergarten for some of them. Two years ago, a third grader who is the same height as me (I know height doesn’t mean maturity, but it made the whole thing even more astounding) she was screaming exactly the same way. I had been teaching for 13 years at that time and that was a first. I’m simply venting. When I first became a nurse I thought 3 12s would be great and I would have 4 days off to do whatever but damn the burnout/tiredness is real. Getting up at 4:30 am and not getting back til 8 pm and then doing it all over again the next day is getting to me. My off days I find myself being so lazy and exhausted that I can barely get any errands done. I much rather have a shorter workday even if its a longer week. School started a couple weeks ago, the kids I’m working with are mostly great but there’s a few that not only need a lot of help but they distract and disrupt everything I try to teach and waste time. I had to get this off my chest somewhere because it is infuriating. I just got hired at a new school with a relatively small team and all I hear all day is what is AI generated. The images, the diagrams, the descriptions, the summarized texts. They take a screenshot of the work book and then upload it to ChatGPT to create an easier version for the slower children. Yesterday somebody handed me a worksheet (as a substitute lesson) for a song where characters are described wearing different clothes and they generated three characters with clothes so the students could find the mistakes, ugh. It bothers me on one hand that they complain about their students handing in essays that are AI generated while they themselves choose the easy route 9 out of10 times. Like, damn! You studied this for five years, apply your skills! Use your craft! Be proud of what you hand out! Hello, I am a travel nurse in a small town. One of my patients has dementia that is rapidly getting worse and they keep eloping. The small hospital does not have a security guard and the police force does not work in the middle of the night. . I have tried to see if I can use restraints if needed and been told by Charge that that is not how they want to handle things. The patient has assaulted approximately 10 nurses and eloped approximately 20 times. The plan in place is to allow them to elope through the front doors- not stop them, and then call the local police to go pick them up. As the weather gets colder, I am concerned that this patient could elope in the middle of the night and freeze to death before anybody finds them. How can I document this situation in such a way that I am not liable for not applying restraints if they do elope in the middle of the night and harm themselves? Apparently, I'm the only teacher my students have who doesn't say that. And a part of me wonders if that means I need to be stricter, but also, if we get through everything on time, why would I hold them after? Also, why would I hold a whole class after the bell if only a few kids are talking? I'd just hold those kids after. Sometimes the kids stare at me after the bell because they're so used to their other teachers telling them, "The bell doesn't dismiss you; I do." CA Assembly Bill 506, which mandates that "administrators, employees, and regular volunteers at youth service organizations complete child abuse and neglect reporting training and undergo fingerprint-based background checks" has been interpreted to include field trip chaperones. Meaning any parent wanting to chaperone a trip, even if they won't ever be alone with a child, will be required to fork over $75-$85 for fingerprinting, as well as jump through a ton of hoops in regards to paperwork. I work at a Title 1 school and there's no way our parents can afford this. It was *already* a stretch getting parents to take a day off of work to volunteer. I'm so frustrated. I’ve worked in the ER for nearly 3 years at a level 1 major trauma hospital. I’m an RN4. When I arrived in the ER as a baby nurse, I had so much compassion, empathy and care to give to all. I wanted to learn, make friends and become a better nurse, build my skill set and become a super nurse. I really romanticised it and thought it was going to be my homebase. I’m now resus trained, paeds trained and am like mid-level senior in the department because of the high turnover of staff. But lately has just been so hard. We have no beds in the hospital, that somehow becomes my fault. Getting yelled at, called names and abused by patients and families is a regular occurrence. Being blamed for long waits and being expected to absorb the negativity and hostility that people bring with them inside the ER is regular for me. I just started nursing school this week, and I'm already questioning whether I made the right decision. I would really appreciate advice from nursing students or nurses who have felt similar. For some background, I did very well in prerequisites like Anatomy & Physiology. My main way of studying has always been active recall/direct memorization. I would study PowerPoints, learn definitions and concepts, cover them up, and explain them out loud or write them in a whiteboard/piece of paper until I could recall everything. That worked extremely well for me.I finished all prerequisites with an A and Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 with over a 100% final grade. Nursing school already feels very different. There is a huge amount of textbook reading, material, assignments, skills, clinicals, and nursing-style questions where simply knowing the information doesn't always seem to be enough. Last week, a para was removed from campus after an allegation that she was violent toward a kindergarten student. This was witnessed by another para, who reported it to admin. There’s even video evidence from a security camera. She was told by admin to keep it hush hush because now the matter was under review by HR. This para, bless her heart, is a well known gossip. She told me every last detail, but she claims Im the only one she told. I didn’t tell anyone. One of my VP’s though must suspect something because I as well as multiple other staff members were all called into her office one by one and asked what we knew about the para’s absence. I told her I didn’t know anything and hadn’t really noticed her absence (I don’t really work with her and have said maybe three sentences to her in the six years I’ve worked at this school). I’ve been teaching for two decades and have seen all sorts of different initiatives., but have never seen a big improvement. There have been small successes where a teacher or a small group go all in and it leads to better outcomes for students, but these things weren’t replicable or sustainable. Recently our executive team and new CNO has decided to use our ED as a ICU. They've decided to take outside hospital ICU/IMCU transfers and board them in the ED. They have told us that ER nurses will be expected to take these transfers from outside hospitals and provide care for them and continue to take an ED patient load. why do some people become teachers if they can’t handle kids with a needs? The other teacher in my grade is beyond ill prepared to teach any student with behavior or educational needs. She can’t handle discipline, hates teaching unions, and thinks that Number sense isn’t worth her time to teach. Now I have to take in extra responsibilities because she can’t keep her students in line. She looses them during the day, she’s late to every recess duty, and lets them lie to her. The way people, including NURSES, speak about female nurses is honestly infuriating. I hear it all the time irl, I see it on instagram, tiktok and on here. Especially when compared to male nurses. Do people not realise how misogynistic they are being when saying male nurses are so much better because they’re sooo unbothered, chill, laid back, unlike their female counterparts that won’t shut the hell up during report! Do y’all realise it sounds exactly like when people say they’d rather be friends with men because women are so much drama? I never bring it with me, I was rushing & didn’t realize I had it until I entered a pt’s home. Normally I’d just put it in my bag but my pt has a 4 yr old brother & I was worried he’d find it. So I stupidly kept it in my scrubs. I know, dumb. Anyway, pt’s mom leaves for the day & im warming up my lunch when I bent over to grab my water it fell out. I quickly grabbed it, but I guess the 14 yr old brother saw it. He told his mom & she switched moods instantly. She said I can’t vape in their house, I tried explaining my side, that I would never do that but regardless she was pissed. She said she can’t have her kids exposed to it. That I’m a “great nurse” but that crossed a line. I apologized. Said it wouldn’t happen again. I’m just worried she’ll tell my employer I was vaping around her kids when I wasn’t. I work in urgent mental health care in the community, and I heard the saddest patient story of my career. I'm pretty resilient, and can usually handle hearing the wildest, traumatic shit, but this was the sort of story that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I was doing my best to keep it together, but in the end I cried in front of my patient and had to step out for a breather. How do you think it would it make you feel if a mental health worker cried for you? I reflected on what happened and remembered a time when a nurse cried for me in A&E, and it was the most validating moment in my patient journey - I've never forgotten her and it meant so much to me that she cared so much. Has anyone witnessed something like this? A teacher worked as a special education teacher. Then decides to leave it for classroom teaching but for the same school. They accepted the contract as a classroom teacher but a week before school was forced back into special education because they couldnt find a replacement for the role they left. The contract that was signed was for classroom teacher. They were basically told sped or resign. The problem is we are in an area where neighboring districts won't pick you up after a certain date because of an agreement if you already signed a contract.
