The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) seeks comments and suggestions from the public in response to one question: Are there new and emerging areas of science with the potential to impact the health and wellbeing of people with disorders of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech and language that are not reflected in the themes and goals of the NIDCD Strategic Plan? Responses to this RFI will be considered as NIDCD updates its current strategic plan.

This matching program will assist the U.S. Department of Education (Department or ED) in its obligation to ensure that borrowers whom the Social Security Administration (SSA) identifies as disabled with Medical Improvement Not Expected (MINE) status and who either owe balances on or who have had any of loans made under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA) written off due to default for the Federal Perkins Loan Program (20 U.S.C. 1087aa et seq.), the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (20 U.S.C. 1087a et seq.), the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program (20 U.S.C. 1071 et seq.), or the Federal Insured Student Loan (FISL) Program (20 U.S.C. 1071 et seq.) or with Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant service obligations (referred to collectively herein as "Title IV loans") more efficiently and effectively are able to obtain Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharges of their Title IV loans.
The Secretary waives the requirements in the Education Department General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) that generally prohibit project period extensions involving the obligation of additional Federal funds. The final waiver and extension would allow 21 projects under Assistance Listing Number (ALN) 84.362A to receive funding for up to one additional 12-month period, not to exceed September 30, 2027.

Middle school is so funny. They tattle on each other, get mad over small things, make you laugh at things you probably shouldn’t, make even the quietest person like me raise their voice, and then have such insightful discussions. I teach special ed preschool in a title 1 public school. Our program is big enough that we have our own building and our own administrator. We have over 100 preschoolers (all special ed) and 11 classrooms. We used to have no kids on Fridays. This is because we have hundreds of IEP meetings every year and nearly one hundred new students referred every year. My district rarely has enough subs, so having Fridays ensured we wouldn't be pulled out all the time and leaving a para alone with the kids. Every time a new child is referred to us, there is an initial IEP meeting, a home or daycare observation, an hour long play-based evaluation, sometimes a standardized asssesment which is usually done at their daycare, a team meeting to decide classroom placement, and a second IEP meeting to confirm their placement. I’m a nurse at an assisted living facility. Been here 1.5 years. My coworker asked me to work for her next week. I asked her if we could swap days and she could work a day for me next week too. Background: new grad nightshift L&D 2025, left LD for outpatient dayshift, dislike outpatient and getting bullied in role by management. Wanting to go back to bedside. Desperately wanting to go back to bedside. I know, wild. I miss the relationships with patients and using my nursing knowledge. I was struggling so bad with the anxiety of LD high stakes nature combined with nightshift so I left to go dayshift 5 8’s which is horrific. 5 days is not for me. I’ve realized there is exactly one thing I’m genuinely jealous of: people with well-paying remote jobs. I have friends who work from home that make double what I make as a teacher, and they straight-up tell me they could never go back to driving to work every morning and physically being somewhere all day. They can throw in a load of laundry, let the dogs out, make lunch in their own kitchen, take little breaks throughout the day, and still get their work done. Is anyone else working in a newer school where the front walls of the classrooms are basically all glass? I’ve worked at two newer schools built within the last 8 years, and both have had glass walls. There is ZERO privacy. I’m constantly making awkward eye contact with people walking by while sitting at my desk. It’s also so distracting for the students! I feel like they lack creativity. Even the posters that used templates from Canvas, Word, etc had something original to them. They also just don't feel unique to the school anymore. There's just this mass produced quality that feels empty. It feels like the schools don't really care about what event, fundraiser they are for. When they are not overly stimulating with the design. Hi. I work in an ER. One shift I came back to the ER from delivering a patient to the unit and noticed a new patient already slotted in the room. I grabbed an ice pack after seeing what she was there for and as I approached the room she was flippppppping out screaming that no one is helping her. I tried to calm her down but she kept going off, really yelling at me. I didn’t say anything mean back to her but know I probably sounded annoyed when answering at this point because she wouldn’t stop. Cut to now I see she wrote a google review using my name saying how I’m such a terrible nurse don’t deserve to practice, and she’s going to write to someone higher up about me. Our math program sucks because the kids do not become proficient in basic operations. They waste so much time "investigating" that they never get the basics down. Or really much of anything mathematical. Our ELA program sucks because it is bloated and unfocused. If you did everything in the manual, you'd need twice the instructional time they say you do. Plus, at the end, no one knows what, if anything, was learned. But I'm cool with both of them. On my planning period, I have about 5 minutes of work running the worksheets and getting the slide show ready. When I have a sub, I just write "see manual" for both subjects, which, at my grade level, comprise the vast majority of the day. I had to get over worrying what a sub would do with such an absolute blivit. But I did. I decided that if that's tough for the sub, that's a decision the district made for them, not me. The charge nurse for my unit on night shift is a new grad who’s been on the unit 9 months. Nobody stays due to low staffing: 6:1, no PCT/CNA, supply problems, and ridiculous and redundant charting expectations. I spend HOURS being a CNA, answering call lights for my patients AND other nurse’s patients, particularly bed alarms. VS every 4 hours on all patients. New admit? Good luck to my other 5 patients, they’re on their own for at least 2 hours, maybe more depending on the admit. No time for breaks or lunches most nights. Lucky to squeeze-in a run to the bathroom. On my days off, I just want to stay in bed. I love my bed. It’s peaceful there. Is it like this everywhere inpatient? Excluding the well-known and regarded 4:1 in California. I just shadowed a nurse today and it was such an amazing experience. I got to interact with the sweetest patients man😭. I have no words to describe what i feel right now lol. Seeing people on one of their worst days of their lives and seeing them making jokes and laughing about the small stuff…yeaa people are amazing. And also i felt like i made a difference or did sth important lol, i did not do anything i just stood there and watched the nurse take care of the patients but it made me feel so fulfilled. I have had this class for 10 days but I have been teaching for 22 years. On 3 different occasions I have had parent complaints about their kids going home saying I'm yelling at them. So, today was the first day of school. And to celebrate this day, 3 high school seniors (and members of the football team) decided to duct tape 2 freshmen to the flag post. They also wrote the word “Freshman” on their foreheads. So I suspended them for 3 days, referred them to the SRO, and kicked them off the football team. I have a zero tolerance policy with bullying. Unfortunately, 3 days is the max I can give on a first offense. Maybe the SRO can do some more with them if the parents of the victims want to press charges. Yes, when I spoke to the parents of the victims I mentioned that they can press charges. I (18F) study in 12th grade I really want to be a good student. I crave academic validation. I want to get into a really good university. I have such big ambitions. Why don't i put in the effort? As a floor nurse, I was surprised by this newly published review and meta-analysis in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. I’ve found so many confused, elderly patients wiggling out of bed who were 100% unable to walk safely without a heavy assist of 1-2. Without the bed alarm AND the ability to respond quickly, I’m certain they’d have fallen. Ofc, that’s just anecdotal evidence, but I’ve always found safe staffing ratios to be the most important factor in fall prevention. I know that "normal" is a loaded term, so let me explain. One of the trends I've noticed in the last five years or so is more students who don't seem to understand the basic idea of school. So, my context is 7th grade, which means that I fully expect my students to get sidetracked, forget themselves and talk over me, and so on. It seems to me that the last five years have seen an increase in the number of students who take it one step further and respond with hostility and resentment when they are corrected, no matter how straightforward and gentle the correction is, which is a much bigger problem. I can deal with kids who understand what is required of them in school but struggle with impulse control all day - it's a lot harder to deal with kids who don't get it, who are surprised and angry when asked to do basic things like listen to instructions without talking. We’re trying to improve how we handle employee training, and I’m realizing that choosing an LMS is harder than I expected. I don’t care about having a huge list of features. I’m more interested in what makes an LMS easy for employees and manageable for the people running the training. For those who have used an LMS for employee training, what being most important? I'm currently reading a book with my 6th graders that occasionally uses the r word. I haven't run into saying it aloud until today. Should I skip over the word or read it? Should I say something to the class before reading about how some words that are used in books aren't acceptable in real life? What do y'all think? Edit: Super interesting to read everyone's perspective—there's clearly no consensus on how it should be handled. I ended up having a nice discussion with the kids about how the word shows how the main character is treated by others, and that even though it's written in the book, we don't use the word in real life. For context, I work on a PCU with 16 beds. Ratio is normally 1:3 (if patients meet certain criteria) or 1:4 (if typical progressive care assignment). We normally have one or two 1:3 assignments and the rest are 1:4. Recently, our hospital decided that med surg nurses can no longer float to our unit due to higher acuity and lack of training for those nurses. They did this while only having a very small number of progressive trained float nurses. And can’t pull from ICU’s due to lack of staffing in those areas as well. I had a bad night, I’m pregnant, was super nauseous half the night and couldn’t sleep. I decided to use a sick day. I reached out to the nightshift charge nurse to let her know I wouldn’t be coming in and needed to use sick time. Her response was “can you reconsider? There were only three of you scheduled for dayshift, one of the other nurses called out sick as well, so we would only have one nurse on” (the remaining nurse is not trained yet to be a charge nurse, and I am,

Do you get annoyed when your resource nurse is knocking out some of your tasks in the background to keep your workload more manageable? I notice the older heads appreciate the extra hand, but the newer nurses get a little territorial with their assignments. Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask for your opinions about a situation my brother is currently facing. My brother is a nurse working in a public hospital. They have a patient who needs to be airlifted to a better-equipped hospital because it's a medical emergency. The hospital is in a very isolated area, so the fastest way to transfer the patient is by a small airplane. Here's the problem: • None of the nurses assigned to the transfer (including my brother) have been trained for this specific job. • The aircraft is very small and doesn't have the proper equipment you'd normally expect for critical care during transport. • If the patient's condition suddenly worsens mid-flight and CPR is needed, they'd have to remove their seatbelts and perform CPR while the plane is in the air, which seems unsafe for both the patient and the medical staff. Actually, I'm someone who wants to learn. I already have a university degree. I just want to learn things online in my free time. I've always wondered about the quality of education a good university provides. Therefore, I'm curious if I can access all the courses a student takes in architecture, engineering, computer science, literature, or another field at a good university for free. I've looked at platforms like Edx, Udemy, and Coursera, but they either offer parts of the course or don't offer free access. I want to watch all the courses of any undergraduate program at a good university, in a classroom setting, for free, without providing a diploma. Is there such a thing? I’m a nursing student and I work as a nurse extern, so I’m basically a tech. I thought blood would be the thing that grosses me out, but unfortunately it’s definitely poop. I’ve worked with one nurse who masks up every time and brings out the biohazard bags.. which personally I would also prefer since I can breathe through my mouth in a mask without it being obvious. But no one else on the unit seems to go to those lengths. Any and all advice or tips on how you desensitized yourself or learned to deal with it are appreciated. I recently took care of a sweet little boy on our peds hospice service who passed a few days after I saw him. I was a float nurse so I only saw them once, and I have since quit working for that hospice agency. The family lives less than a mile down the street from me and I pass their house daily. I wanted to drop off flowers and a card for the family. The mom and I bonded over all of our kids being the same ages and genders. Our oldest kids will be in school together next year, so I will see them again regardless. Is this crossing the line? Further, do you think the family will appreciate a gesture? Homehealth peds with a client who has 3 siblings and they all have nurses. Somehow I feel like I’ve ended up the entertainer/babysitter to all these children. I’m also feeling judgement from the other nurses because my client sleeps in late (even when I attempt to wake him) hates taking his pills, can be a bit difficult. He has good days and bad days.
