Need advise for my wife, Please Help

My amazing wife of 34 years went back to school to get her RN in her early 50's after getting tired of being a MA Office Supervisor because she is super compassionate, smart, extremely detailed and absolutely loves helping sick patients. She does fantastic at dealing with the grumpiest of patience and loves the challenge of softening them up and "winning them over". She worked SO hard in school and clinicials...only people here would understand..and got straight A's...not easy at her age. She finished school close to a year and a half ago. And now, being extremely patient, compassionate and paying very close attention to important details that her colleagues often ignore...she finds herself in the same dark valley as many of you here ;( Working extremely long hours, charting and reviewing patient info all weekend, etc. She's currently salary 1st shift home health care....her 2nd position in the past year-ish after doing med surge for a while right after graduating (she did her externsh

Struggling first year teacher

Hello!!!! I recently graduated in May with my bachelors in elementary ed. I just started my first teaching job about 3 weeks ago teaching 4th grade. Man have I been struggling. I am luckily at an amazing school, have a great team and support but I have been having a hard time. I have horrible anxiety, I feel like im juggling 100000 things at once and feel like I truly have no idea what I am doing. Tmr starts week 3 and I just feel so overwhelmed and exhausted. I have cried almost everyday and today (Sunday) I wake up already anxious for the upcoming week. I know teaching is hard and I never went into this thinking it would be easy. Even with student teaching I felt this way but thought when I had my own class I would feel better. I just feel like im doing a bad job, I feel like im not teaching well and just feeling so low and kind of miserable. I feel like giving up (I’m not going to, I don’t want to leave this school hanging and feel like a quitter) but man does it sound nice. Is it g

Med scheduled at shift change?

A recent post asking if people give meds at 7 keeps running in my head? Why the actual would that not be move to an hour earlier or later? Depending on the facility normal times? Maybe because I’ve been doing this for 30 years and don’t care about the BS but this is the type of crap that makes nursing unhealthy. submitted by /u/maplesyrupchin [link] [comments]

First Day of School

Tomorrow is the first day of school. It’s my second year, 33F. I’ve been in the district for four years, but this is only my second year in my room. Anyway, I’m having some anxiety. Kids and parents aren’t the only ones with fear about the big day. I know once I get in a routine, I’ll be okay. This year I’m not in grad classes so I’ll be able to dig deep into the curriculum, but I also won’t be able to use that as an excuse if I mess up. Not that I did. I don’t know. I’m scared. I have moments when I realize the immense responsibility and it’s suddenly met with honor and happiness I am there for my community. I care about public service, but I’m just having feelings tonight. I am scared of the unknowns and then I’m also aware that imagining my whole life all at once will only freak me out. I know I can handle things when they are actually happening. It’s just a limbo night. submitted by /u/Critical-Rooster-673 [link] [comments]

Unpopular Opinion: You SHOULD read your powerpoint slides word-for-word.

I know everyone says this is a terrible way to present, but hear me out. The reason is the Split Attention Effect. Your brain can only pay attention to one thing at a time. If you project a slide with more than a few words of text, then immediately start talking using different words, the student can EITHER read the slide OR listen to what you are saying, but they can't do both. Usually what ends up happening is they try to switch their attention back and forth between reading and listening, but that just causes them to miss some of each. I noticed this happening to me repeatedly during inservice presentations by admin. It drove me crazy. There are two ways to avoid the split attention effect. The first way is to pause after displaying text and give the audience time to read it silently. This works well if they actually read it, but realistically many students will just zone out if you do this. The second way is to read the text aloud, word-for-word, as soon as you reveal it. This work

Exodus from Texas to a blue State

I’ve taught mostly in Texas (dual language) and I’m over it; the constant micromanaging, feeling like an axe is about to come crashing down (even when you’re doing your job). I want to stay in the field and I’m just considering where to go. I’ve heard and read great things about various states and Washington state stands out as a teacher friendly and affordable. Obviously affordable depends on where you go to, but Texas isn’t as cheap as people think, especially considering the max you can earn. I’m that millennial with debt and I live with family because I can’t afford rent on a 1/1, much less with a child. So, what’s the 411 from my fellow teachers in blue states? I know rent is insane in certain cities (which I will of course be dodging). Edit Google said that Yakima was a decent place submitted by /u/rocket_racoon180 [link] [comments]

Evaluation of Therapeutic Equivalence; Guidance for Industry; Availability

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency) is announcing the availability of a final guidance for industry titled "Evaluation of Therapeutic Equivalence." This guidance explains FDA's thinking on therapeutic equivalence evaluations and therapeutic equivalence codes (TE codes). FDA's therapeutic equivalence evaluations are listed for multisource prescription drug products approved under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) in the active section of the "Approved Drug Products With Therapeutic Equivalence Evaluations" (commonly known as the Orange Book). These therapeutic equivalence evaluations have been prepared to serve as public information and advice to state health agencies, prescribers, and pharmacists to promote public education in the area of drug product selection and to foster containment of health care costs. This guidance finalizes the draft guidance of the same title issued in July 2022.

But now I’ve been there long enough they’ve decided I can float. Which, floating for the whole 12 hour shift wouldn’t bother me so much. But they rarely do that. No, my job loves to do this thing where you float to another unit for the first 4 hours of your shift and then come back to your unit for the last 8 hours. Question about Nursing Care Plans and Documentation

Do nursing care plans actually have any legal purpose and/or effect on patient outcomes? I’m talking about these pre-built templates and checkboxes that are required to document in the EMR (e.g. impaired skin integrity). They seem like a waste of time and do nothing but add clutter to the patient’s chart. Has anyone ever had or heard of a case where a nurse care plan was brought up in court? Does anyone know of any EBP or studies that show that they do anything at all? submitted by /u/BadNewsBenz [link] [comments]

Help: my coteacher is using ai to make our lessons

I have taught 7th grade science for 3 years. I moved to a new state and went down to 5th grade. Each teacher in my grade level is in charge of one subject. The grade level chair is in charge of the science curriculum. I gave her some of my materials for a seed lab from the University of Arizona. However, when I opened the lesson it was all copy and pasted from Chat GPT the formatting included. I can tell from the emojis and underlining that ChatGPT likes to use. I know parents will look at it and see exactly what I am seeing. Which is very obviously AI. I don’t know what to do. Because I have taught science before and in all honesty it’s slop. But, I don’t want to rock any boats. We are all supposed to use the same lesson plan. What should I do? submitted by /u/throwawaybtwway [link] [comments]

In icu with dad on a ventilator. All I can think is how smart the nurses here are. Not just about the meds, but about keeping us sane. Communicating with him when he can’t talk, managing a bazillion cords and machines, stalling lunch breaks to make sure he’s comfortable. I appreciate the quick jokes and check ins for the caregivers, I’m not a patient but your checking on me too. Can’t imagine working in this type of environment every day. Nurses with call requirement, how do you deal with a night call back, then going to work in the morning?

I've heard that in the OR/Endos, etc where nurses can be called in late at night, get the job done, then back to work to their normal shift in the morning. Is it me or that sounds....insane ,unsafe, and unhealthy? You have a sleep deprived nurse going to work, go home, then back to work again. In higher pay area like the Bay where they get paid a couple hundreds an hour, there might be some financial incentives. I can't fathom doing it for $30/hr in many hospitals in the South, because even when you double it, it's only $60/hr. submitted by /u/yukinara [link] [comments]

I’m normally not bothered.

Without too much info. Very elderly and the plan is to trach/peg. The family is woefully misinformed about everything. Think they will be able to eat while on the ventilator after trach. They get in the face of the patient and agitate them on the vent. The patient is hard to sedate to begin with. The family freaks out because the patient coughs on the vent and gags. Of course they will there is an irritating tube down their throat and you’re agitating them. I try to educate gently that the patient needs rest. Tell them: No, you can’t stay overnight in the room and they get mad. I let them stay wayyy after hours because I’m a pushover. For some reason the situation is really. I mean really bothering me. I’m mad that they agitate the patient. I’m mad the doctors don’t explain things. I’m mad we’re doing this to a very elderly, frail person when the nearest places to take trachs are in different states/hours away. Ugh. Help me. Med Error

I made my first med error today as a new grad. I’ve been doing so good and I was feeling so confident. I gave the wrong scheduled med. The patient was fine and there was no effect from the medication error. I immediately owned up to it and everyone was so nice. The patient and their family were so sweet to me too, which made me cry because I just felt so bad. I’m trying to get over it but I feel so terrible. I started to cry and then was embarrassed I cried at work. Everyone was so nice and told me it happens to everyone but I can’t help but feel like everyone thinks I’m an idiot or that I can’t be trusted. AI-Proof Homework??

The issue of students using ChatGPT/AI to do their homework has become uncontrollable. It has become blatantly obvious that almost every student in each of my classes simply uploads the questions and fills out whatever the AI says. As a teacher, I am so frustrated. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like it's my responsibility to teach my students what they need before sending them onward, and yet they aren't learning because they aren't even trying. Is it my fault?? I learned that a teacher at a different school has begun "inverting" his math classes -- meaning he has recorded his lessons and assigns students to watch them at home, so that they do the typical "homework" assignments in class. He can then make sure technology is away so they can't use AI. Although I see some benefit to this, I don't really like the concept. How is it any better than something like Khan Academy? It has removed the in-person human element of teaching a class. Is this the future of teaching?? I really

With the rise of AI, I think teachers need to drop the Wikipedia hate

Last week I heard a student say one of his other teachers “banned wikipedia, but really likes ChatGPT.” This was enough for a 15 year old to be shocked; I am beyond annoyed at that mentality. I spent my formative years hearing how Wikipedia was the devil and was never acceptable. I understood those teachers rationale and I still do, but it’s time to drop the Wikipedia hate. I’m not here to claim it’s better than academic research or rigorous reading, but it is a gem in the dopamine speed of LLMs. – The work is summarized, yes, but it is sourced . That is more than I can say for AI chatbots. Even if you ask them for sources, it is still pulling from countless places without credit just to formulate a response. – The information is good . For the decade I heard “anyone can edit it,” I don’t think I’ve ever stumbled something intently false or blatantly misleading. I’ve seen a lot of incoherent BS from AI. – It incorporates more than just summaries. I teach Social Studies and love the pri

What are the origins of education?

This is a paper that takes a Darwinian view on education to try to understand it origins. If we go back far enough in time, education does not exist. So, when does it appear? It largely depends on how we define it and distinguish it from learning. This paper attempts to do this by examining the academic literature in hunter gatherer societies, what psychological studies say about the way children learn, and then what changes when civilizations utilize scripts and have bureaucracies that are in charge of accounting. I taught my kid the times tables in a different order and I'm convinced it's objectively better

When I learned the times tables back in the day, we learned them in order -- the times tables for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and so on. Having now taught them to my 8yo, I see that there is a better order in which to teach them. You start with 2s -- that’s just doubling, and most kids can handle that easily. Then you might want to do 10s -- there, you’re just playing with place value. Then, if you want, you can do another easy one -- 11s, for instance. And then, arguably, you might want to build on the knowledge you got from 2s and 10s. 4s are just doubling twice, and 5s are just half of what you’d get multiplying by 10 (so 5x6 is half of whatever 10x6 would be). 3s might make sense next -- those you’d have to memorize again, or you might think: I know how to double, and 3 groups of that thing is just adding one extra group of that thing (so 3x7 is 7 more than whatever 2x7 is). 9s would be fine to do next: they’re in the 3s family, but also there are all these tricks you can do with 9s (using fing

For first year teachers (or if you just need a reminder in general)- you're going to be okay!

Everything feels incredibly overwhelming right now. It is going to be okay! Take a deep breath, use some coping strategies (personally I love the physiological sigh and progressive muscle relaxation, but find what works for you) and start sorting your list by "needs to be done today" to "can be done in a month". Start with the stuff that is highest priority. Do one thing at a time! Do not hop from one thing to another (coming from a person who constantly does that when overwhelmed), stick to the task and get it done. Put music or white noise in your headphones and zone everything out. Things will not be perfect right away (or ever!). Take that thought out of your head. Your only goal is to have a functional first week. Teach the basics first. Everyone says this, but what does it look like? Pretend the children are feral, they've never been to school. Teach them how you want them to walk into your room, how to sit down, what to do first, what to do when they need to go to the bathroom,

Trump aid and sterile water

Trump aid Natalie Harp has recently come under public scrutiny / heightened media attention for various reasons. One thing that keeps standing out to me is that she claims an accidental infusion of sterile water by a nurse left her homebound and in a wheelchair. I know that getting pure sterile water without any electrolyte or medication added would be quite bad for you, but my question is do y’all‘s hospitals just have bags of water around??? I have never seen a liter sized infusion bag of sterile water on my floor ever. We have sterile water in bottles that obviously cannot be hooked up to an IV line and we have sterile water premixed with things like magnesium and we have tiny 10cc vials of sterile water for reconstituting things like diuril. I guess I’m just questioning how it was even possible that she could’ve gotten a large amount of sterile water infused accidentally / is that a risk that you, my fellow nurses, come across on the regular? submitted by /u/Flimsy_Course_9923 [lin

How do you show parents where their kid's reading gaps actually are?

When a kid falls behind in reading, parents panic faster than with almost any other subject. They wonder if they missed something, if testing is needed, if their child will ever catch up. But most reading gaps close with consistent daily practice, not dramatic interventions. What parents actually need isn't another adaptive algorithm or more engagement metrics. They need to see the specific skill gaps in plain language, so they stop guessing and start knowing where to focus. Mastery percentages per skill area, not time-on-platform. The shift from anxious to informed changes how a parent shows up every morning. What I'm wondering: do the reading tools you've built or used actually surface skill-level gaps in a way parents can act on? Or is it still mostly completion rates and minutes spent? Feels like there's a real gap between what gets built and what actually reduces parent anxiety. submitted by /u/PrestigiousChip5172 [link] [comments]

Teachers who watch Abbott Elementary, do you find it cathartic and validating to see teacher issues on screen or does it just remind you too much of your own frustrations and make it unenjoyable?

I’ve always been curious about checking out Abbott Elementary. I’ve heard it be praised for being a realistic depiction of teaching (or at least realistic for being a sitcom). Part of me wants to watch it because it seems it would be validating and relatable to see teachers’ issues on screen in such a mainstream way. And I’m sure it would be funny too. Another part of me thinks it might just make me miserable. If it reminds me too much of the real educational issues I experience at work, I can imagine it just making me frustrated and it would become more of a negative experience, similar to scrolling through this very subreddit (which I don’t do anymore) and seeing that everyone else is struggling and dealing with some crazy bullshit in this profession too. I’m sure I’ll give it a try at some point but just wanted to know y’all’s thoughts on this! Also, I teach high school art so I’d be curious to know if high school teachers find the show entertaining and relatable too! *tagged humor

I think it's unfair to punish teachers for leaving during the year

I mean CEO's resign, superintendents resign, across all walks and jobs. I don't live where the these "takeovers" in certain districts in Texas has taken over. I've heard that some teachers are leaving but are threatened with license punishment or whatever if they leave. I don't think that's fair because they weren't given clear outlines from their building or school what conditions would be like. I mean if we start a new year or new job, if things are terrible and there is no way to fix it, then one should have the right to leave. Just my opinion. I know that it takes work to find a new person, but isn't that the job of "bosses" or leaders?? I mean if one is in charge of the building and thinks the only time a new person should come in June for the next then I think they have the wrong job. That's the job of a boss I thought. I mean I think 2-4 weeks would be a reasonable timeframe to exit. Why keep someone if they realize they are not a good fit, burned out, or just need out? submitte

First-year teacher, already had to call out sick and now the ER says I need several more days off. I’m terrified of looking unreliable.

I (23F) just started my first year teaching at a charter school, and I genuinely love it so far. I’m excited to go to work every day. The school can be a little disorganized, but from what I’ve seen, the teachers and even admin genuinely care about the kids and try their best. Unfortunately, during my second week, I got sick. It started with a scratchy throat on Monday, and by Tuesday morning I felt like I could barely move. I was feverish and felt horrible, but I was genuinely petrified to call out because: 1. I’m still within my 90-day probationary period. I don’t want to be seen as unreliable, especially as a brand-new teacher. My previous employer let me go after I got sick, even though I literally threw up in their office and they could physically see that I was ill. So I think that experience has made me extremely anxious about calling out now. My admin and coworkers reassured me that I could have stayed home and that I should call out when I’m sick. They were actually incredibly

Insurance Making Our Job Unaffordable. What should I do?

For context, I teach in Florida and can't leave the state right now. I'm simply wondering what to do here. Teaching has been my entire career and I'm 39. Insurance premiums just came out and insurance is going up by 100 plus dollars per paycheck if I'm reading it correctly. Since i have to take on my boys (6 and 3), I will be paying 583 per paycheck or 600 depending on which plan I pick. This does not include vision, dental, or anything extra. I'm at a loss as this amount will hurt our bottom line. My husband currently has our boys but has to remove them due to insurance changing for him to one of the worst insurance companies in existence. He's talking about keeping them but I don't think it's a good idea due to their needs. That leaves me in the hole and even with him bringing a bigger check, we rely on my income as i make more than him. With this increase, I will be making far less. I do not know what to do. We have two months to figure this out until open enrollment happens but I'm

Help me, I just lost my first nursing job

I literally just graduated this year, and passed the NCLEX in June. Started my job in July for a LTC / rehab facility, (which was not what I wanted). Also I have never worked for a company this large before. I’ve been a CNA for years in LTC and was excited about going back to school for my LPN. I was very excited about becoming the nurse for my residents and being able to provide them quality patient centered care. Then the further I progressed through school, and learned all about nursing, and clinical skills. And had my clinical rotations. I fell in love with medically complex patients in an acute care setting. anyways, ive always had some anxiety, and can be a hard critic of myself. but throughout school i was managing it well! I quit my vape, I was eating healthy, yoga, everything with moderation right. Then, I just felt such a high high passing nursing school, and my NCLEX. I felt like I learned the material well, never got under 80% on an exam. Then stepping on the floor for my f

I want to throw myself off a building

I just accidentally forwarded an email of my nurse in charge report, which was actually just 7 blown up faces of all BTS members, to all the supervisors, director, administrator and NP in the building. Somehow the image I saved to send to myself was saved as my NIC report. This feels worse than a med error😭 submitted by /u/lmk0714 [link] [comments]

Is it true that you make more lifetime as a teacher (salary + defined pension plan + perks + benefits) than most engineers in Ontario?

Out of control Kindergartners

Hello, I am in great need of some advice and help. I teach Gen-Ed Kindergarten in a Title 1 public school in California. We started school 4 days ago and most of my class has never been in school before. I am teaching them how to take turns talking, raise hands, be part of a community of learners and waiting (a big one). I have 4 students on the spectrum, one of whom is not participating in any activities with the class. He is constantly going through my personal belongings, ripping things off the wall and playing with all of the manipulatives during instruction. He takes out the creative play supplies, rips open boxes and leaves messes everywhere. This is pulling the rest of the class' attention away from learning how to behave and follow directions. They think that if he gets to do whatever he wants, so should they. Some of the more severe issues that a handful of other kids are having include turning off the smart board while I'm using it, messing with the volume, going up and scrat

I’m just exhausted from being assaulted by special needs students, getting no support from the administration, and dealing with parents who don’t seem to care.

I went into this 10 years ago with good intentions and filled with care, now i struggle to get out of bed in the morning knowing i will get assaulted and basically get told to deal with it. submitted by /u/Squigels [link] [comments]

A nurse as a patient, keep thinking about her after my shifts

I work in LTAC and am a new nurse (4 months). I have a patient who is a nurse, ended up in our facility after a MVA and is on trach, feeding tube and has wound vacs and more wounds. She seems to have given up on herself! She pulled her PEG the other day and keeps pulling her mask or AIRVO from her trach. Whenever I go in and talk to her and try to talk to her, she starts crying but doesn’t respond to anything else we ask/tell her. I know she’s suffering and she KNOWS what’s next and just wants to end her suffering! How do you guys cope with situations like these? I keep thinking about her and am not able to sleep or do anything else when not working! I guess I am asking for any advice in how to manage these kind of situations. submitted by /u/karamtokaand [link] [comments]

Nurse station Wi-Fi: strong. Nurse station tea: stronger. ☕️

I really hate how chaotic it feels to sit there and chart.. I Came to the nurse’s station for a pen and a snacky . Left with 4 rumors, 2 secrets, and somebody’s entire relationship history. HIPAA says we can’t gossip about patients, so naturally we gossip about each other. nursing stations really be a break room, courtroom, and TMZ newsroom all at once. Forever wishing I can chart from the bathroom >.< submitted by /u/matchaamaamii [link] [comments]
