My hospital started mass firing casual/PRN nurses

My hospital wants casual nurses to work 400 hours each year. Thing is, in my unit, we have 5 casual nurses, and all of them are retired so they only work seasonally. These nurses are invaluable because they pick up sick calls and cover vacations. Other units are similar. Another issue is that shifts are awarded based on seniority, so the most senior nurse gets all the shifts she wants while the least senior one only gets the shifts no one else bid on (which is still important). Last week, 3 of the nurses on my unit received an email that said they've been fired for not picking up 400 hours. One of them was 15 hrs short. All their pre-booked shifts have been removed, leaving us short staffed. The remaining 2 nurses are in their late 60s and will stop picking up soon. Same thing is happening on other units. ICU now has no casual nurses. This baffles me. It costs NOTHING for the employer to keep these causal nurses. These nurses don't get benefits and rarely get OT. The only thing this do

No ‘Correct’ Bells

Saw the post about no student schedules and felt like adding. 8 days of school done (middle school) and our bells are not correct. Start time and bell schedule have changed. Control over when bells happen has apparently been farmed out to a 3rd party. We change classes by announcement. Bells still ring like they did last year. 8 days, so far. Public School is Improving

We hear it all of the time: public school is in decline. I don't see it. As a teach, our pay is in decline. That one I'll give you. The money going into public education is in decline when we look at it and understand the basics of inflation. Certainly that is true. In part it is true because politicians and those controlling the funds keep shouting that the money is not producing the outcomes, that schools are failing. Teachers are failing. Teachers, however, are not failing. The whole of the job has changed, true, but that does not equate to failure. We have students in school today that would have been institutionalized before 1990. We have a far more diverse population. We have a completely different spectrum of socio-economics. We have a vastly larger number of students in two income homes with no one at home when the kids get there or even in the mornings. The language shift nationally is vast. Our clientele is completely different. We are also teaching more and more complex thin

Intraoperability between BD Alaris and Meditech

Our hospital uses Alaris pumps and Meditech Expanse. They went Live with intraop this week… And so far, I HATE it. I feel like most hospitals use it with Epic and have little to no issues, but apparently not very many hospitals use Alaris and Meditech. Any nurses out there at the few hospitals that use these two? Communal Supplies

I'm a first year teacher and just finished up with my open house. My school has a very lovely admin team and PTA which supplies us all sorts of free supplies. Despite that, we still have a supply list as we rely on donations and so teachers can have a backlog in case of additional students or damaged supplies. I teach ELA and so many parents came to open house with lovely personalized materials with their students names plastered all over them. With the structure of the class, theres really no way we can logically use them. All students are given identical journals, pencil pouches, and plain folders to lessen the focus on having expensive school supplies and now I'm not sure what to do. Their cubbies are already so small and the supplies they need is the bare necessities as everything else is communally shared. I really don't wanna get yelled at by parent by not letting their kids use their 7 different sparkly folders but it would really make me a lot of extra work having to repack stu

Starting a new school year at Los Angeles and I’m already depressed.

I have been teaching for 6 years (6 grade in a middle school in LA) and I’m 29 now and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety since 18 (had symptoms way before).Every other year I get soooo depressed. Usually it happens after a month of going back into school, I hate change. This year 2 days in and the panic started. I stated to shake and cry before the 3rd day of work. I push through for a week but everyday I feel sadder and get quieter and slower. I didn’t make it to Friday, I had an anxiety attack. I cried hysterically and even wanted to hit myself to make the thoughts of the classroom go away. I scared my mother and she took me to the Doctor Who gave me a week off, but I feel so pathetic because school just started. In the summer, I think of nothing and at work time I can’t stop thinking about everything. I don’t know what to do. I even have my sister go with me one day, but it’s hard to talk, hard to eat, hard to sleep, hard to keep living. I’ve been through the ups and downs,

Was offered a dream job, but already am signed for 26’/27’ school year. Help.

I’ll try to keep this short. Yesterday, I was offered my dream job. A full time private tennis coaching gig that will match my pay and benefits for a 1 year contract. I don’t know what to do. I started teaching 24’/25’ school year as a K-12 PE teacher on a one year contract. Last year, they mid year took away the one year contract and moved me to one through the end of this year. I did not sign a new contract, they simply moved me. I never liked my job, and this was my last year regardless before leaving this specific district and moving states. I don’t know what to do. I obviously want to take the new job, but do not want to screw over my staff or students. I am the sole PE teacher at the K-12. What would you guys do? How would you navigate the decision? Thanks for all input. EDIT: A week of PD starts Monday, so school is not in session yet. submitted by /u/Theguert [link] [comments]

What degree should i go for as someone who feels behind in life and had messed up in early 20s

Im 27yo and suddently woke up to the fact that i completly messed up my education being consumed by anxiety, feeling not good enough, lack of discipline and simply being distracted and had a very narrow vision of whats possible out there. Im planning on going back to school this fall and i have 2 options : I can either take an online bachelor in computer science or computer science and management (3years). Or an industrial/civil engineering maybe even software if i later decide to switch (4-5). Im newly married, my husband can support me but the guilt and shame i would feel going to school at my age instead of already being established seems almost unbearable. Ive spent the last 5 years searching for what i can do and where can i find money and success while also thinking about having to take care of people around me (cook clean and make money). What is the smarter move? The engineering degree would take 1-2 years longer and is on campus (good for networking, internship but commute). V

"This patient isn't SICK ENOUGH for our CVICU, we only take the worst of the worst."

Basically every interaction I have with CVICU staff or the house supervisor when I have to send someone up on a neo drip or after a high risk PTA where they want to monitor the heparin drip or something closely. Yeah I know, you want an adrenaline rush, but do you really? Just take one easy patient, take a break, you deserve it. House supervisor gives me a lecture every time about how full the ICU is, they can't "just give me an ICU bed" when I want one, they have to move people around, the doctor needs to talk to the intensivist etc... Yeah man/lady, I'm not the one who is asking for an ICU bed, the doctor who DID consult with the intensivist did, why would I change the patients admit status? Yet everytime, without fail, I get the lecture. Didn't we just go through this yesterday? I'd love to send them to the floor and have a nurse with 6 other patients monitor their neo drip, I really would love to fuck up their day even more than it already is and get put on hold for 39 minutes as t

My hospital had only phlebotomist for the entire evening

I work at a level 1 trauma center with several buildings, hundreds of patients, including those with timed labs. Yesterday evening, our charge forwarded us an email with a message from the hospital that there would only be one on-duty phlebotomist until 10 PM. I don't even know if the other people showed up because I was day shift. We have up to 800 beds. That is hundreds for one woman. Apparently hospital admin is trying to phase out the phlebotomy department so that they can save money. No though at all to how our workload gets doubled for the same salary, and we get less time for patient care. It's not like the doctor is going to be any less snappy when I tell him I have 10 other tubes to send down the damn chute. Hospital admin has to do better than this. submitted by /u/Turbulent_Advice421 [link] [comments]

Extremely anxious returning to work after 2 months off

I had two months off of work due to getting bariatric surgery and having some complications. I’m still not 100% better, I can’t really eat anything solid without severe nausea and stomach upset (I’m working with my doctor on this). I’m also tired all the time (that could be bc Ive been off my arthritis medication too tho). For reference I work on an oncology unit, nights. I’m just incredibly anxious about returning. I’m actually sitting in the break room prior to starting my shift rn, and I’m so anxious. Walking through the unit to the break room was really difficult. Knowing what I’m going to be dealing with for 12 hours straight makes my stomach sick. I don’t know how I’ll do it. I can’t eat much, I’m always tired (physically and mentally), and I can’t even drink caffeine yet. I kinda just need some words of encouragement or solidarity or something. I'm having a rough week. Kid (6th grader) was misbehaving very badly today and I pulled him outside for a conversation. We talked about his behavior and how he was acting. He even has this crazy look in his eye. I told him I knew better but it looked like he was high or something. It was that bad. Is seen it before. Thought nothing of it. After school along comes mom charging in. Kid told her what I said and how I apparently accused him of being high and that all he was doing was laughing. Student stinks and won’t accept help

Hey! I’m a credit recovery facilitator at an adult school. I teach high school kids during the day so it’s easier on their schedule, but they are still considered part of the adult school. I recently got this kid switched to one of my classes. He stinks really bad, I’m talking armpit smell, not any another type of stench. Students avoid sitting next to him. The issue comes when he left the class one day and I sprayed with deodorizer to get rid of the smell. While I was doing this, a student came into my classroom and laughed. She told me that she knew why I was spraying the room and proceeded to tell me that he is aware he smells. Apparently, both teachers and students have told him. Not only told him, but OFFERED HIM DEODORANT. She says he has refused every single time. I’m not sure what to do. I’m new and in adult school, so I do not have a relationship with the nurses, I don’t even have their number. I also feel like he is going to feel targeted if I put a hygiene basket in my room

Was ATI always 900+ dollars a semester???

So for this semester, our resources are, for the most part, going to come from ATI. Assignments, textbooks, all that jazz. However, my brother who graduated 2-3 years ago paid 300 dollars for the same program at the same school. Soon-to-be formerly stoner new grad

Hey nurses! So I’m graduating in December with my BSN. I looooove safely indulging in a little marijuana after a long day, and have been enjoying it all summer but have just stopped (for the fourth time) for school / my first job etc. Today I’m looking for reassurance from stoner nurses that this life isn’t over for me, that one day I can be a real nurse and come home to a real blunt. As for now, I live in Texas, and know I can’t indulge again until I’m working and stable in a state in which the plant is legal. But tell me it’s possible! I miss it already and am mourning the loss. It may sound stupid or like I’m dependent on it, but I don’t have much else going on in my life (except school) and it definitely helped take the edge off. Also, not interested in any anti-weed advice. I’m fully aware of all pros and cons as well at the stakes should I get caught using in relation to the nursing field. submitted by /u/lowesandtoes [link] [comments]

frustration with “The Pitt” season 2

total disclaimer: i love The Pitt and this is not a “i don’t like The Pitt” post. my partner and i love it and it’s been really helpful in getting him to understand what being a nurse is like. fantastic show in my opinion. that being said, the season 3 trailer just came out, and it reminded me of an issue i had with season 2. this can totally be deleted if it’s already been discussed but i really hated how they depicted the hospice patient in season 2. Javadi essentially says “but that much morphine is going to kill her isn’t it?” and Robby basically says “yeah but it’s the merciful thing to do.” uh, what? sorry, last time i checked, comfort care and continuous morphine drips/PCAs are not medically assisted euthanasia. that’s literally hospice 101. of course, The Pitt is not responsible for teaching the public how healthcare works. however, people are going to see this and get scared that morphine at end of life is what is going to kill their loved one and not the cancer, heart failure

Did CA quietly quit funding by “butts in seats”?

CA is one of 5 states that fund by student seat time. I think in CA 4 hrs and 30 min counts as a full day of funding. But all I’ve seen is legislation repealing truancy consequences but I haven’t seen districts push the panic button on funding given the amount of chronic absenteeism. The bar for being chronically absent is >2 absences a month. We have kids at our school who are missing 40% of the year. I think our average is ~35%. Maybe more (I have to pull the data). submitted by /u/ICUP01 [link] [comments]

The purpose of public education has changed.

This is something I have been mulling over for a while. Society has changed. Education is now a customer service product and we are expected to deliver what the parents and society want: well educated, well mannered, well rounded emotionally stable people. What I think has been lost is that public schools are a free *public service*. Citizens were once grateful for the equalizing opportunities free public access to quality education granted. Instead the public feels we are supposed to do everything for children and society. Everyday you hear something like schools should teach kids how to change tires and make budgets. Schools need to teach kids to regulate their emotions. Schools need to teach kids cursive. You also hear from the when school is over it is family time and if schools can’t do their job during their workday it’s their problem, or my kid don’t act like that at home. If kids aren’t fed at home, aren’t properly clothed or have access to books, teachers are expected to step

Declined a job offer

I graduated from college about a year and 4 months ago. I got my degree in secondary education with minors in earth science and meteorology. I live in a highly competitive area for teaching jobs so I’ve only interviewed for a few jobs but never got any offers for full time work. Last school year I did land a 3 months ago long term sub position. I really enjoyed my students, the staff, and the school culture at that school. Since I didn’t find any jobs for the upcoming year I called the school and decided to go back as a building sub, which I am very excited about! Earlier this week, I found an opening for a full time job teaching high school environmental science. I thought why not just apply and interview to see if this could be an opportunity for me. They offered me the job but at a school district that would be a one hour commute away from where I live. She started working 10 years ago because she was making sure my siblings and I were focused on school. My father (a teacher) is 70 years old with no retirement; we're still renting an apartment. My mother has been a Certified Nursing Assistant in LA for 8 years. CPR certified, licensed, does everything right. And she's still making under $20 an hour. She's 52. She tells me everywhere hurts. Her back, her knees, her hands. Eight years of lifting and repositioning patients who can't move themselves does that to a body. I've tried to bring it up. "Mom, hospitals pay more for the exact same license you already have. Let's look at listings." She brushes it off every time. Changes the subject, says she's fine, says she doesn't have time. Once she called herself dumb, like she actually believes that's why she's still whe

Baby shower for our praying mantis

Yesterday during a fire drill we noticed that our pal the praying mantis that resides right outside the classroom door, was laying an egg sack. Now the class wants to have a baby shower for the proud mama mantis. Any fun ideas? submitted by /u/headed-up-north [link] [comments]

We Should Bring Back Expulsions Or More Students Will Leave For Home Schooling and Private Schooling

Public education in America has been getting worse for a while. That much isn't really debated. The issue of expulsions and discipline is. From what I gather, opponents of expulsions are generally against them because the outcomes for the student are much worse. I don't dispute that. Getting expelled is probably stressful and embarrassing. It puts a lot of stress on families who are already struggling. However, the tradeoff to not expelling students is beginning to cause serious issues. Parents have noticed that extremely violent students are allowed in the classroom with seemingly no solutions or consequences. The research says that students can't be expelled, local, state, and federal policies prevent it, and so schools don't expel anymore. I think public schools have painted themselves into a corner. We refuse to make a serious tradeoff. Do we allow violent students in the classroom or do we prioritize the learning of everyone else. In a perfect world every district has an alternati

Two weeks in, no schedule

I literally can’t believe I’m typing this. I made a post earlier about how I haven’t gotten my rosters or schedule in the first week, but deleted it because we were told it would be done by Monday. Well, it’s now been two weeks into the school year and we STILL don’t have our schedule. We’re doing rotations with a single grade, but the times are fucked and the rotations are random. Some 8th graders haven’t had math in two weeks, some 7th haven’t had English, etc. I’m just… blown away. How can this even happen?? Charter schools suck but this is such a new low. Edit: still not allowed to print and still no curriculum. I literally started sending packets to be printed by the front office that’s just pages from the book lol. Such a waste of paper but if you’re not going to provide what’s needed then I’ll do it myself submitted by /u/peppermintcrowz [link] [comments]

CA -> TX license fingerprinting

Considering the very dire job market in California as a new graduate RN, I’m now looking to apply to jobs in Texas. I’ve already submitted the application for license endorsement as well as paid for Nursys verification, but now I need to do fingerprinting. I already pre-enrolled with Indentogo. The Texas BON states that I, as a California resident, need to do an FD-258 hard card fingerprinting via a law enforcement agency. I have a few questions about that. Do I have to provide the form or would the law enforcement agency have it? How would the Texas BON know that I did it through a law enforcement agency? Also, how long would it take to process once completed. If anybody can help, I’d appreciate it. Thank you so much 🙏🏼. submitted by /u/SnooCrickets1714 [link] [comments]

RNC- Maternal Newborn Nursing

Hiya - has anyone used this book to prep for the RNC-MNN certification? My manager bought it for us on our unit. Attached are some of the questions. Is this how the questions are asked on the exam? In an older binder with questions from 2018 the questions seemed much harder. I’ve heard good things about the Mometrix but not sure if it’s necessary. Thanks for any feedback or tips! submitted by /u/No_Nefariousness4868 [link] [comments]
