Is it worth taking this position (NY)? Hi everyone, I graduated in March from an accelerated nursing program out of state. I moved back to NYC immediately and have been applying nonstop (150+ applications). I finally got an interview. Now here's the thing: Its a children's hospital in westchester. According to the recruiter and the website, they have a lot of higher acuity patients such as vents, trachs, central line, G-tube care, etc. It is a specialty hospital focusing on complex care patients rehabilitation. My dream starter job was PICU, but obviously I learned very early on that wasnt going to happen. If I take this job, what are the odds I can later qualify to be hired at one of the big name hospitals in the city as a PICU nurse? Or should I keep applying. Being LGBT is one of the most controversial topics in the world. And at school, it can be particularly challenging. We all remember the taunts and teases. I think it was the worst insult you could throw at someone, especially a boy. However, times have changed. Same sex marriage is legal in a lot of countries. On the other hand, conservative ideas are growing in popularity. Maybe in some schools, the gender that someone is dating is as relevant as that person's hair color. 175 questions, 25 of them do not count, they do not tell you which ones. Took 110 minutes of the 3 hrs, got up to stretch and pee twice. The test givers do not mess around, I had to flip my pockets and get wanded every time in and out even if I was in full view. But I passed. And I have got to say... What an asinine dumb ass test. 70% of the material covered i have NEVER seen in my 8 years as a nurse working at a lvl 2 and 3 ER. Medications I have never heard of or are not actively used anymore because they've been replaced with newer methods / new generations of meds. The study book? I need some prerequisites so I’ll be working on those first and then nursing school if all goes well. I’ve chosen a very affordable school and I have a car, housing. No debt will be taken on. I have a bachelor’s degree. I have always been interested in nursing as a career. I’ve taken several courses/certifications since my degree and aced them all, so I know I have a good chance of success. I’m trying to discern if spending probably 3 years total (~2 years full time) is a good idea if my husband wants to retire early in about 4-5 years? How do these educators who clearly have zero management or people skills keep getting admin positions? During this teacher return week my admins have: told a teacher "You should get Depends" when they expressed worries after an emergency surgery. Not communicated to our grade level team how teacher switching in a departmentalized grade (rather than student switching) is going to work. This is especially egregious because the new teachers were not informed of this when hired. We have received zero modeling, zero resources, and absolutely no money to purchase any extra teaching tools to support this teacher switch. The newest admin taught a sibling of mine over 30 years ago and his first words to me were "Oh your parents didn't like me". Like what? unprofessional much? Been doing this for awhile but this year I've got the toughest kid I've encountered. He's extremely adhd and vocal. Won't stop moving and won't stop talking. He starts at a regular desk. A little bit into the day he gets antsy and i move him to a table in the back where he can wiggle more. Talking never stops. In fact today he started singing. My admin suspended him for half a day. I asked about getting him an IEP or behavioral plan and they were dismissive and unhelpful. It’s my first year! I don’t know how I’m going to make it through the year. When I called admin to report the incident he grabbed the phone cord and pulled it. He tried to rip up the letter that was going home with him. He climbs the wall in my classroom. Last year he would hit and bite students. I don’t know what to do. He doesn’t have an iep and requires zero support besides the counselor sometimes talking to him. I found out I was pregnant this summer and after the joy wore off the “holy crap how am I going to do this,” sunk in. Here’s the main concern: last year I did all four NBCT components and, naturally, burned through a ton of my leave (I’m carrying over three days 😬). My due date is March, which means tons of unpaid leave (my state does not offer paid maternity leave), but it also means tons of appointments before I even deliver. I’m trying to schedule appointments after work, but it’s been really difficult so far, so I’m really worried about using up all my leave and going negative. I’m hoping my admin will be flexible and let me go to some of them during my planning (we have 84 min blocks) which mine leads right into our hour-long lunch block/study hall time. Hello! I have decided to go back to nursing school and I started this week. However, I have always struggled hearing blood pressure, the 2 step, I know how it should sound and I am unable to hear it on both of my stethoscopes. I have both a Littmann III and littmann lightweight, I have been told but other instructors I may need an amplified one but I decided against it. I have finally decided that I need to get one and would like some help deciding which to get. I know they’re expensive, but I have money set aside and I can actually spend it without worrying. Any recommendations. Well, it’s been a minute since this happened, but I think I’m ready to talk about this. It’s been pretty stressful TBH, but I’m happy to share my experience. Here goes: So I had a semi-clinical position in critical care. Lots of my duties are admin, but I am an experienced nurse with 10+ years of ICU and ED experience. At times, charges would ask me to take on a patient for a while if we got slammed until they could figure out staffing (call in a nurse, next shift starts, whatever). I'm currently in my final year at uni training to become a music teacher, and I have public Instagram and TikTok accounts where I post covers of the music I'm learning at the time. Some of the pupils from my placement school have found my accounts and have started liking, following and commenting on my posts. I don't mind them seeing the content (it is public after all) but I'm wondering what the best way to handle interactions with them is while still maintaining professionalism. I feel a bit awkward when they comment because I don't want to completely ignore them, but replying with something as simple as "thanks!" also feels a little unprofessional given that they're pupils, and I wouldn't want to accidentally cross any boundaries or get myself into trouble over social media contact. It’s my first week of teaching 1st grade(first year) and I feel like i’ve got nothing figured out. Why do we expect students who have been in a self-contained classroom being taught a heavily modified curriculum to be able to succeed in a general education classroom with 30 students and no additional support? I got a new student today. Nice student. Very polite and excited to be in my classroom. The issue is, this student cannot read. They can write, but only if they are copying what is on the board or another paper. It takes them a couple minutes to write sentences that are 5-10 words. This student comes from our self-contained classroom. Academically no one expects this student to achieve anything close to a high school education. Any grade I give this student will be a lie. Is it just me or is the content of nurse hub for the hesi a2 not the same as last year? I took and passed my hesi a2 last year but had to give up my spot in the nursing program due to life and my score is only good for a year so I have to retake it. I signed back up for nurse hub to review everything again and the content isn’t the same? I’m reviewing the quizzes and am seeing questions about topics that weren’t in the lessons. North Carolina asking teachers to step up to foster In short, an overwhelmed foster system is looking for help and noticing teachers would be a good fit, being good with kids and all, for short-term placements. It's even advocated for by a teacher. Now, good foster care is important, and those who open the homes are angels who want to make a difference. I fully encourage good people to consider fostering. And they're right: teachers are kind of a natural fit. And the focus is on short-term situations. Yet, something about this initiative rubs me the wrong way: we need more foster homes and teachers are selfless people who are in it for the kids. Let's target them in a campaign! I don't know. I’m having huge problems with my vital sign check offs. During the check offs I couldn’t find out the diastolic… I think it’s because I’m hearing other sounds(like my fingers on the stethoscope), and I can’t figure out 100% if I chose the right numbers on the diastolic when practicing If you have any tips it’d be appreciated. I got a total of $500 to spend on my classroom this year! It's from two different pots of money. As an interventionist, I come up with fun ways to use random instructional materials. Anyways, I got an email asking me to justify certain materials like.... construction paper/graph sketch pad for a dysgraphia student/clip magnets for word cards and other things. Ok. So, I'll send an email justifying these things that cost maybe $50 total. Sure. Then I get an email saying the graph paper and magnets are rejected? Like, those were like maybe $20 total. But like, what the hell?
