I brought my students out for a basketball competition a month ago. During the match, two of the students who weren't playing got into a fight. One of the boys punched the other boy in the face and his nose bled. My colleague (an untrained teacher) administered medical aid on the boy by using an ice pack on his face to reduce the swelling. I spoke to the assailant to investigate and find out his reasons for punching the other kid. After this incident happened, my principal scolded me for not keeping an eye on the students. She felt that it was my fault that the fight happened and I must have been negligent. She also scolded me for allowing an untrained teacher to administer medical aid on the student. She said that only trained teachers are allowed to do it. This is absurd in my opinion as any adult should be allowed to render medical aid to a student when they are injured or when there is an emergency. So I've been using peardeck for about three years and I really love it. I pay for it out-of-pocket and I absolutely think it is a game changer. For whatever reason my district blocked it. Maybe it's Google suites security or some hypervigilance maneuver on their part. But I've already spent my money on my subscription this year and when I ask them to unblock it, they don't really understand how useful it is. Unfortunately, I'm one of the few people who actually use it in my district because no one else is willing to pay for it and no one else has the skills to make it work and be effective in a classroom. But it's very disheartening because now I have to go through all of my slides shows which amount to about 150 slides shows and make them low-tech and less fun. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother. They used to pay for Nearpod, but they stopped paying for it and I really hate Nearpod. Starting to hate everyone in the technology side because they're working against us and not with us.
So I graduated in may and started work 2 weeks after graduation (we got our ATTs quick). I’ve officially finished orientation on med/surg/tele, dayshift, but of course I’m still working out some kinks in my day to day routine and getting used to being without a preceptor. Anyways, the nurse I’ve been receiving/giving report to is VERY passive aggressive. Like the other day, the aide had left early so I had to also be the aide for my patients which was no big deal. However, one of our patients had gotten Bumex so her PureWick canister was full and she looks at me and says “do you want to empty that” and I do not mind at all like I completely understand, but she makes me feel like i’m not competent and like I’m a bad nurse. I did a couple travel nursing contracts at a behavioral health hospital that was extremely poorly ran. They chose to focus on everything except giving quality care to patients and ensuring safe staffing. This pic really sums up what it was like being there. For context: The saltines at the med window were intended to be given when meds should be taken with food. The meal portions they gave patients were super small, and many psych meds can increase appetite, so patients often were hungry. There were many times people asked for saltines in between meals, but management only wanted us to give them out with medication. Patients eventually caught on and knew to ask for a PRN just so they could get the saltines. This place was so stingy and micromanagey, you had to ask leadership to restock the damn SALTINES. We suffered an unexpected, heartbreaking loss in our family in August, and the thought of having to play juvenile ice breaker games on the first day of school next week is giving me anxiety and preemptive anger. It takes every ounce of fortitude to even get out of bed in the morning. I absolutely do not want to play two truths and a lie with my “elbow parter” about summer vacation or go “find someone I don’t know” and play 20 questions about the highlight of my summer. I had a stroke and have been out since March. I miss my students. And my boss has driven hours to see me and deliver a letter from one of my students.i miss the kids i used to have. I’m a middle school teacher. I have 165 students. 9 students have health plans. 18 students have 504 Plans. 7 students have IEPs. I read every individualized plan before school started. I knew I had three students with Type 1 Diabetes. But I’m still trying to learn which kid has what plan while I learn their 165 names. Today I asked a student to silence their watch who was getting blood sugar alerts. Mom is rightfully pissed. Who has figured it out? It's the dart grip and is often used for ultrasound IVs. Sorry this whole post turned into a brawl between the IV nurses and everyone who can't fathom that there's more than one way to do something 💀 I've tried it on a patient and it worked very well for me. I have to strain to hold it the 'traditional' way. You don't have to mirror the photo, the angle and exact finger placement are adjustable to your liking 😉 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The photo is from a Bard product training video and they're demonstrating a few different holding techniques that the device works with. First year teacher here teaching 9th grade. I have 30-35 students per section. It’s the second week of school. I have been counting down to get them to quiet down. It’s been working but I have to do it often, and in one class I had them give me 5 minutes of silence at the end of class because it wasn’t working. Another period is getting a seating chart tomorrow due to specific students. One of the teachers told me that her student said I was very nice. Overall, ive been getting good engagement. They raise their hands, ask questions etc. However I have that feeling in the back of my head, like I don’t have control of the class. My admin is very strict and comes in sometimes. I’m always worried they’ll come in and I won’t have control of the class. Is the feeling normal or am I starting off too nice? I love my job and I have no intentions of leaving because of this. But at the same time it gives me nightmares. Last night I was dreaming I was working with a trauma patient who broke his neck and was being fitted with a halo brace. In the dream I watched the screws get put into place and hear bones crunch and the patient scream. The reality was different. When this actually happen the patient assured us that he wasn't feeling anything but pressure, but was just really scared. I haven’t been working in nursing for that long, but a few years has done me in for a lifetime. And it’s not the patients. Sure, some can be annoying to work with, but generally, the patients have been pretty good. No, it’s the pettiness, drama, and sheer immaturity from other coworkers that truly exhausts me. Before anyone says, “Other jobs have drama too,” I agree. Of course they do. But having worked in other fields (and having known various others who did the same and then ultimately left nursing), I can say with confidence that it simply isn’t on the same level or nearly as malicious. In fact, the professionalism in other fields almost feels like a distant other world at this point. Does anybody else have friends/relatives who think it’s okay to just send them/show them vulgar things just because you work in healthcare? For example, one of my really good friends will just send me pictures of her stool or snot and think it’s okay because I’m exposed to it constantly as a nurse, but it’s truly different when it’s your own friend. Each year when I get a new class, it seems like a pencil is more and more foreign in their hands. Before getting into everything, I should mention that I already put in my two weeks, and this week was supposed to be my last week at this job. Long story short, I work in the ICU and recently had two patients with pacemakers. One of the pacemakers was doing some funky things, which made me realize I was a little rusty with EKGs. I had a tab open with different EKGs and practice questions and was reviewing them periodically while taking care of my patients. My charting was up to date, and my patients were stable. One had already been downgraded to step-down. I went to lunch around 2:30PM. When I came back around 3 PM, my manager pulled me aside and told me that I had been looking at EKGs "all day" instead of taking care of my patients. She then claimed my charting wasn't up to date and that there was something wrong with my notes. Does anyone else work in a job where, any time a patient complains, you have to meet with your manager to discuss “what you could have done differently”? I received one complaint because I was unable to do something that was literally against policy. Now my manager wants to meet with me to review what I could have done differently. Honestly, it makes me want to quit. Instead of feeling supported, I feel like I'm constantly on edge and worried that even when I follow policy, I'll still be questioned if a patient is unhappy with the outcome. I had this issue last year, and it seems like it’s going to be a problem again with this new group of students. Many times throughout the day, when I correct a student’s behavior, I get a chorus of students repeating after me. It doesn’t matter if it’s something simple like tying their shoes or a reprimand for interrupting me or leaning back in their chairs. A few times per class period, I'll have a chorus of students repeating after me. "Yeah Jimmy, tie your shoes!" "Oh my God Jimmy, tie your shoes!" "Jimmyyyyy, tie your shoessss!" Obviously, this reduces the likelihood of the original student complying because students don’t want to listen to their peers. It also turns into me having to reprimand the students who are repeating after me, so suddenly one redirection has multiplied into several. It’s exhausting. Last year, it got pretty severe. Yesterday was like my 6th day on the floor with my preceptor. To set the stage a little bit, I previously worked in the ICU as a tech, and now I work in the same ICU as a new grad. TLDR: I (25M) am a nurse working at a moderately sized level 3b NICU with 90% female coworkers.
