This job rips. I worked hard to get here and Iām so grateful to be where I am. If youāre struggling to find a teaching job after college, donāt overlook CTE I keep seeing posts from new teachers who graduated, got licensed, and are now struggling to find a position in their subject area. I wanted to throw out an alternative that I honestly didnāt know much about until I got into it myself: CTE (Career and Technical Education). CTE classes are the career-focused courses offered in middle and high schools. Depending on the school, that can include culinary arts, automotive, construction, agriculture, health sciences, business, marketing, computer science, engineering, media, cosmetology, hospitality, and a ton of other pathways. I teach Culinary Arts at a public high school in Hawaii. I switched to teaching after 15 years in the culinary industry. I was able to get hired without a degree based on my experience. Yesterday we had an actually useful training about behaviors (although we didn't have enough time to cover challenging behaviors... augh) and we were discussing diversity being displayed in photographs and materials we use. Specifically one method of taking real pictures of your classroom for your daily schedule. This trainer specifically noticed one picture of snack time was all white children and teachers sitting down for snack time in one of the classrooms she worked in. She decided to, and I quote use Gen AI "to make the children look more diverse" I audibly gagged at that ngl. You put children's faces into a computer to make them diverse? What the actual fuck... Getting ready for new year, and the new IEP/504 documents are being funneled out. Teaching 6th Grade and the from-Elementary plans are atrociousā¦. 50% of the kids on plans in an area where the demographics would indicate that it would be significantly less than national average. (Wealthy, rural, primarily traditional homes) The plans themselves are ridiculous. Have elementary admin surrendered to being treated like daycare centers? From above, it seems like theyāre making significant academic concessions for any parent who asks. If we are going to harp on literacy rates, Iād like a look at the rates that exclude data from students that are exempted from any level of academic challenge/rigor. Hi everyone. Iām 11 weeks pregnant and starting school on Monday. Admin already knows but Iām scared to tell families. Last year I left on maternity leave in October and here I am pregnant again! It was planned and my husband and I are very happy. In my school, we teach two grade levels in a classroom. I teach 4th and 5th. My 4th graders cycle through to 5th grade with me. Therefore, I keep half my group for two years. Can you see the potential issue here? My now 5th graders will have had a teacher on leave 2 years in a row and Iām terrified that the parents will freak out. Last year, parents were trying to pull their kids out of my class because they were so scared of an interim sub. Is it just me or are people kinda... entitled? And ungrateful? Stupid? I know I would feel grateful if someone was caring for my parent, child, or loved one and relieving me of the responsibility. (Coming from a special needs mom). In other times or countries, the responsibility falls on the family to take care of their sick/disabled ones. I wonder if that ever occurs to some people...? So as the title says my paycheck was declined For a little backstory, I had initially attempted to start per diem at this SNF however due to training schedule conflicts, I wasnāt able to complete orientation and I never received a paycheck, but I let it go- didnāt think much of it since I was employed FT elsewhere. Fast-forward to a month ago when I was able to start a part-time position with them, I had mentioned the previous paycheck not being received and they said they would look into it. Iāve just finished all my entire orientation and was supposed to be paid on Thursday. Imagine my surprise and I went to go cash my check on Friday and the mobile deposit wouldnāt work. I figured it was probably just a problem with the size of the check so this morning I took it to the bank. I attempted to cash it through the ATM and was told to check was invalid. I have contacted HR. Iām extremely upset. They owe me over $2500. The taxes have already been taken out, but no money has hit my account
I'm a nurse in a hospital. A few days ago I was called down to HR. I thought it would be about going over the new position I just accepted. They told me my name had come up in a group of names as they are investigating drug diversion. They asked me to take a urine test which I completely agreed to. They told me I'm not the only one being tested as well. The next day they called me to schedule a time next week to come talk to them. This will all take place 5 days after the urine test. I have zero issue with a urine screen, and maticiously check at the end of my shift all narcotics are wasted or returned.i cant think of a thing that it could be unless they're just checking everyone who had access to the pyxis that day. This is my first post, ever. Iām a registered nurse working case management (M-F, 9-5) at my hospital that Iāve been at for 3 years and as of recently I picked up a second job, which is social media. My social media has rapidly grown over these past few months, income including. I recently was reached out by my dream brand and they invited me for a two day campaign photo shoot (absolutely insane). They would accommodate for my travel costs and for me being there. As soon as I was told this news, I immediately went to request PTO. I had a feeling my boss was going to deny me, which she did. I know she doesnāt like me, and I have absolutely no idea why. I am a new teacher and am really excited to begin the new year. I like my group of teachers. They have been very helpful with providing decor, advice, and words of encouragement. I am so over schools that don't force teachers to "clean out" the room. If you are leaving you should be REQUIRED to remove every staple, every boarder, every piece of non school issued furniture UNLESS you've spoken to the person who will take over. Our hospital system is currently in the works to become a "Pathway" hospital. It sounds like a Magnet designation alternative. I volunteered to be the unit rep for this and I really am not a joiner-cheerleader. What I am is a skeptic. I have been through too many jobs with the promise of a program that will bring more power to the staff and make it an eglitarian dream with tons of staffing on demand and a more shared workload. Can anyone who has experienced this give me the full story? How has it helped your staff? Has it done anything at all or worse than nothing? Iām currently marking year 10 assessment tasks for an elective class and so far 4 students out of a class of 20 have used AI to complete their assessment. 1 I already knew had because she was copying and pasting it from Chat GPT in front of me during class. Iām feeling really deflated about it. Whatās the point of marking assessments when the students themselves donāt try. I had a huge conversation about their use of AI in the past and I just donāt understand why they rely on it so heavily for a class they have chosen. This will be my 11th year teaching, 8th year at this Title I school. Iāve had good years and bad. I have a tendency to spiral after bad years. Last year was bad. My district adopted all new curriculum, plus my building was piloting another, and I started having issues with my team (Iāve made two previous posts about them so I wonāt elaborate). I was also pregnant. Iād say I have imposter syndrome, but I donāt think thatās the right word because Iām fairly certain my teammates find me incompetent. I just have so much anxiety - about dealing with my team, managing all the curriculum again, juggling motherhood, and generally just sucking. I feel like I definitely dropped the ball on some things last year that make me look bad (mainly students who were struggling and I couldnāt get their scores up). 32M single nurse who works inpatient 12 hour shifts. Live alone. Looking to get 1 or possibly 2 small dogs. Breeds that are not super energetic requiring multiple walks per day. Work 3x 12's and pick up an extra 1 OT shift every other week. Out of the house at 6 AM and return around 8:30 PM. Non-work days would be a non-issue. However, on work days, my plan was to go for a 30-40 min walk in the morning prior to work and then 20-30 mins after work. While I'm at work, have a dog walker or parents come by around 1 PM to spend time with them for an hour. For dog owners who live alone and can weigh in, do you think I'm "doing enough" on my work days for them or do you think i'd need to make more accommodations? I unfortunately dislocated my shoulder recently on my dominant side and for lack of better words completely fucked the whole thing up. I found out today Iām going to need surgery and Iām expecting a 6 month minimum recovery time where Iāll be pretty limited with how much I can do with said arm. I just lost my bedside nursing job as I hadnāt been there long, didnāt qualify for FMLA or short term disability, and they were not able to accommodate my injury (which is understandable for a bedside nursing job). My question is, what can I even do? I canāt imagine being a clinic nurse right now, because although itās not as heavy as bedside you still most definitely need 2 functioning arms. For one yearly eval, I met the 5% max raise evaluation but I was only given 4% because i wasn't allowed to be given a percentage point increase of 2% points from my previous years evaluation (which was a 3% even though I met the criteria for the 5%). I had consistently stayed late for work, and averaged about 40-50 hours of call a week for years. If that doesn't qualify as exceeds then I don't know what else does. Honestly if you show up for your shift at least consistently and have enough to keep your mental health, physical health and home life health intact. This should constitute a 5% evaluation on it's own. That honestly changed somthing in me. Now, I still do my best at work, but, I don't think I really care about evals? Just some thoughts here. Idk if anyone remembered me but I was the nurse who posted the comparison chart between my old hospital and new hospital with a significantly better pay. Iām back again. Key points: I only get 2 weeks (6 shifts) orientation at the new hospital. I have 2 years ICU, 1 year OR experience in the Philippines. Migrated to California. 8 months day shift tele experience. Told them all about my background. Was honest and said my ICU experience is from the PH. They said itās okay, you will learn. No experience in epic and pyxis and other fancy ICU equipment. I got hired as night shift ICU. Day 1 orientation, I told my preceptor my background, but she was pretty much hands off with me. Taught me once, then expected me to be completely proficient with it. Iām a second grade teacher in Texas. This yearās PD was intense. We were trained on a new math curriculum and the trainer was absolutely insufferableš. She was talking to us as if we asked to be there, and as if we asked for tips on how to teach. Maāam, Iām there to be shown how to navigate the curriculum and what it offers. This lady was going on about how much children are dying to learn and that we are doing them a disservice if we do not follow the curriculum verbatim. There was a point in the work day that she was telling us how to talk to the students and how much they need to move around. Hi Iām going to start my nursing school in 20 days and at the same time, I am going to work as a PCT (apprentice) at a hospital. I have had a disc bulged due to an accident three years back when I was 17. I had a bad rest of three months which helped me stop my pain. It took me at least four months to recover. Since then, I have not had any episode of pain. But sometimes there is muscle tension whenever I left something heavy and to mention, I usually avoid lifting heavy things. I have been doing my nursing pre requisites for one and a half year. I think that will go in waste. My parents are not happy at all because they have invested a lot of money on those courses. Iāve not been sleeping from last three days when I got to know in the hospital orientation that I will have to lift patients which I knew I will have to, but I was not very sure about that. Iām sure they have their reasons, but how are people supposed to travel to visit family if the first available travel days is Christmas freaking Eve? Maybe Iām just too old school. Even as a kid, weāve always had two weeks or more. Is this the new norm? Edit: I forgot to add that last yearās calendar was voted on by families to have two full weeks for Christmas break and add two days to the end of the school year. Time magazine finally pointing out the truth. There is no shortage of nurses. The problem are the facilities that would rather run short staffed and underpay nurses that do show up.
