Just need to laugh at this one. I applied for a high school science position a little farther from home. I a dual B.S. in Biology and Secondary Ed, just finished my M.S. in Biological Sciences. Broad field certified in my state. Have taught Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Biology, and interviewed twice for the position. I found out they hired someone who graduated this past May… with a bachelor’s in English. Before anyone asks, yes, it was for the same middle/high school science position. They posted it on their facebook. I know there’s more to hiring than just degrees, and interviews matter, but I can’t pretend that one didn’t sting a little. I’ve been on orientation for literally ONE MONTH!! I started and trained for only FIVE DAYS!! One week!! I’ve never had experience with hospice and by week 2, I had my full caseload, with 9 IDG notes to complete by that Friday, AND declining patient… NO HOSPICE EXPERIENCE BTW!! A couple years ago, a teacher at my school came to this sub and copy-pasted an email from his department chair into a post complaining about the department chair. A friend of mine in the department saw it, used a few other clues in the poster's history to figure out exactly which colleague it was, and reported it to admin. Recently came across this video from an event that occurred two years ago, really close to where I live and work. Basically a patient had arrived to the clinic to get injections for their psych meds. They were cooperative and compliant with the nurse giving them their meds, but when they were brought back to their NP's office, the patient pulled a knife and stabbed the NP in the neck. The NP quickly ran out of the room and the patient slowly followed, knife in hand. The video showed the other nurses basically going crazy and running away, some got near the patient but he ignored them and pushed them out of the way because he wanted to finish off the NP. He tackled this admin nurse who was helping the NP get away, then she got away and he kept stabbing the NP. What shocked me the most was that there was a probation office in the building, with one employee telling the cops that they were 'federal' and that the stabbing shouldn't have happened. I am normally pretty good at my placement it’s an elective surgical ward and everyone is relatively well and I’ve had no people deteriorate so pretty cruisey I have been here about 4/5 weeks. I am getting tireder, less sharp and need more work to sustain myself so I generally work 13 days on ( including placement ) and 1 off. With the 2 being 6 hours work. So 52 a week? We have acute overflow today and I had my first proper high acuity. Older, hospital acquired pressure injuries, FRAIL, woundvacs, unwell. Unhappy. I struggled being able to critically think and I am so tired I just can’t really manage. Eg she adamantly refused a skin check and I accepted it to the RN I paired with told me sternly that was negligent of me (I told her when she refused)… Which like yeah I have to agree actually with the vulnerability of that patient. Furthermore other things and she put me on the spot to explain woundvac in front of the patient but I have never seen woundvac before. As well as kind of beli

I am almost 29 and wanting to pivot from corporate to nursing. I have thought about nursing for a LONG time. I tried to take prerequisites while working full time and that was a challenge for me but I’m ready to finally commit and go back to school full time. I (kind of) have a plan to pay for school. but I’m at a spot with my partner of a future wedding and a family and that part is kind of holding me back. anyone go back to school while being engaged and planning a wedding? was it worth it? I got my classroom perfectly set up, and I was so excited for tomorrow. Today is student prep day, and I was going to get to meet my incoming 6th grade students. At 10 AM I got a call from my dad that my sister passed this morning at 34 years old. I am still in shock and obviously I have a lot of emotions and thoughts flowing through me right now. I am taking tomorrow and Friday off and will return Monday, but I truly hate that I have to miss the first two days. Hello my fellow nurses, So i had a patient with scheduled Oxy q4h. It was scheduled 0700, 1100, 1500, 1900. I was running late on my meds and gave her 1100 dose at 12:00pm. Then the next dose I gave it at 1530. I tried not to give it too close but also didnt want to mess up the schedule even more. The next dose I was planning to give at around 1930 when we do 2nd RN bedside check. At 7:15ish i go into the med room to get the oxy. The night nurse goes around the unit looking for me. Eventually she finds me in the med room and says "Emma, can you make sure you give that 1900 oxy". I say yeah I am going to give it. She then goes like, do you still have to give report to others and I say yes. She huffs and puffs and says nevermind I will give her the oxy. I try to tell her that I am already here about to pull the oxy from the pyxis but she walks away and leaves me talking to myself. It was an awkward moment for me and 2 others that were in the med room. Then I look for her to give patient
Okay so there’s a private college in my state that guarantees a spot in their program if you pay their rate. It’s about 100k for the two year program for a BSN. I have a friend that graduated from that program and went into nursing with the mindset that she would make a ton of money and 100k in debt was no biggie. Reality set and she’s considering filling for bankruptcy due to the private 100k loan she took, plus the loans she had from her previous degree, and credit card debt that sustained her for the two years she was in the program. I believe the way social media paints nursing to be this glamorous career that pays a lot of money and has made people believe nursing is the way to go. I went to a regular 4 year university and graduated with 35k in debt (which to me, was a lot). I think about why would anyone agree to pay 100k for a nursing degree??? I am starting nursing school this fall and we have an orientation day before the semester starts. I noticed that there was a math competency section on orientation day, I am not sure what it will entail given that we are going into it not having learned anything prior. The reason I went dumpster diving is because I got a call from a fellow teacher saying that all of our classroom (mine and my 2 teammates) things were thrown into the dumpster. At the beginning of June, our school was hit by a tornado. The roof was blown off on our side of the building as well as over the gym.
