So I retired at the end of last year after only a few years of teaching (middle school).I am an energetic and efficient person who has had many jobs over my lifetime, including hard and stressful jobs. Some jobs were so difficult that at night I'd be burnt out and exhausted, some jobs were so difficult that I would often cry as I was leaving work. I have never in my lifetime experienced anything as hard as teaching. On every single level, teaching absolutely killed me. Trying to get and keep the attention of a room full of students who really did not care about their grades, and why should they? We weren't really allowed to fail them, practically the best we could do is give them a d, and kids did not care. They knew they were just going to be passed through and they were. Had an established appointment for my work physical at 0800. Get there 5-7 min early, park, and walk to the front entrance to enjoy the morning sun. There are two other vehicles in the parking lot (this is relevant). A moment later a man and woman get out of one of the vehicles and as the man approaches he asks if the door is open yet? I look up and he’s got a fish hook in his left pointer finger. I introduce myself and ask if I can take a closer look. The nail bed is cracked, the barb is buried, the finger is numb and pale. The front doors open up and as I turn to walk in there is another gentleman walking past me to enter. This is the other vehicle in the parking lot. The 3 of us walk inside, there are 3 receptionists. One asks for the first person, I wave my hand to the fish hook and tell him you have an emergency you can take my appointment. i was at an annual check up with this PCP w/ a complaint. the MA rooming me asks her questions and then asks the "when was your last period" question. i said 3 years ago and she wanted an exact date. i remember it being in the month of march and i was thinking out loud. i say something along the lines of, "well i know it ended in march.. not sure when the start date would be but if i had to guess... let me..." she then cuts me off and says, "i don't care about the date it ended, whenever people in healthcare ask this question we want the start date. i could care less about the end date. why don't you have that app that tracks your period like the rest of the girls your age?" My cousin is currently in her final year of nursing school (general nursing track) in Vietnam. During her clinical rotations across various hospital departments, she has collected some of the weirdest, funniest, and most absurd patient stories. I wanted to share 10 of them with you all: A high school girl came to the hospital with her parents, who insisted she was suffering from severe appendicitis. After a quick clinical examination, the doctor bluntly told them, "Appendicitis? She’s literally in active labor and about to give birth!" Outraged, the parents accused the doctor of lying and attacked him. Half an hour later, the two parents were holding their newborn grandson, completely stunned and speechless. An 85-year-old man was brought in by his son and son-in-law for a hemorrhoid checkup. I had 48 as my largest (middle schoolers in a portable mind you), and my largest last year was 44 so I had to give up my prep period to make the numbers better. Sorry if this post doesn't belong here. As an elder brother in university who has a sibling currently attending K-6, my parents struggle to know where to help since they lack the knowledge of where he currently stands. I don't think teachers have the time or capacity to organize personalized 1:1 conversations with each family, weekly, even monthly, on top of the already tiresome lesson planning, teaching, and grading. The most my parents see is letter grades and numbers -- something that is not of much help if a child is truly struggling (especially when it's with specific concepts or material). Oncology nurse, been one my entire career (4 years). Worked some bedside jobs and moved to outpatient clinic a year ago. Great pay, 2 remote days a week, the whole nine of soft nursing. My god I am starting to hate it, mainly because of my coworkers. When I first started everything seemed fine. It’s a small specialty clinic (4 providers, 5 nurses) that’s part of a large cancer center. Everything just feels like it’s starting to sour. So tonight was Meet the Teacher for my school. Everything was great until a student walked in that I had been told to take off of my roster because he had transferred to another school. 😳 I introduced myself and told her I was informed he transferred so I didn’t have anything ready for him, but if she could wait a few minutes I would get it. Normally it would be in a folder ready to go and he’d have a desk with his name and his name on the backpack area, etc. So while I am getting everything together that she needs to fill out I asked about the transfer. She explained that they decided not transfer him at the last minute… well that would have been nice to know before they walked in! She did apologize for not calling ahead of time to let us know she’d changed her mind. I’ve been a nurse for 2.5 years. I’ve worked ED my entire career thus far. I started in adult and moved to pediatrics thinking it might help to boost my morale, but I’m more burnt out than ever. The trauma and suffering is also just too much for me I think. I try to have a positive mindset and work hard, yet I still cry from stress/anxiety/anticipation before nearly every shift. My wife starts her first teaching job in a few weeks, middle school math. Second career. So, I’ve been a nurse since 2011. No kids of my own. Have spent most of that time in inpatient and outpatient behavioral health working with adolescents and adults before I got my current job in outpatient family practice just over two years ago. Today I took a call from a NICU NP who wanted to coordinate care with one of our pediatricians - her two week old patient was being discharged on home hospice. Baby has been in the NICU their entire life. It’s stuck with me all day, I keep thinking about how fragile life is. So I just wanted to say thank you to the NICU nurses out there. I couldn’t do what you do at the bedside every day - I only helped facilitate a phone call between two providers about this and it made me pause. I’m looking for advice from anyone who’s taught right up until delivery. I’ll be 9 months pregnant when teachers report back this upcoming week (but seriously, where tf did summer go???) Thankfully, I’ll realistically only be working for about 3 weeks before starting maternity leave, but I’m already feeling anxious about it. I’m a 4th grade teacher, so I’ll have 25 ish kids to manage while also being very, very pregnant. I’m not sick (thankfully), but the exhaustion has definitely kicked in. I also have to pee constantly, and our classrooms get ridiculously hot and stuffy at the beginning of the school year. Luckily we are on a four day week, but still those four days are longgggg sometimes even when not preggo. To make things more fun, we switched classrooms over the summer, so I still have to get my room set up before students arrive. My long-term sub is set to go, but I still have a lot of prep to do. Recent university graduate with my bachelor’s in education. Summer’s winding down. Over the past 4 months I have applied for 40+ positions in my county. I had to do 12 essay/video response sessions. I had 7 job interviews. Zero success. Where the hell is the so called ”teacher shortage” I heard all about since I was in middle school? I thought everyone was leaving this profession in droves and that supposedly the nation as a whole was in desperate need of new hires? A lot of people from my cohort are in a similar boat. A lot of teachers I’ve worked with over the years have recently told me it’s a new shift. My state is Utah if that’s relevant. I know we do have the highest percentage of kids in the country. I’m genuinely curious whether teachers understand how deeply some of their actions stay with their students. I am 28 years old now, but everytime I reflect on my life, I always remember that I’m only where I am today because I had teachers that believed in me, protected me, or fought for me when no one else would. When I was 9, my teacher recognized that I met the criteria for gifted education and recommended me for the AIG program much later than most of my peers. The next year, I broke my glasses, and my parents could not afford to replace them. I started falling behind because I could not see the board and was eventually removed from the program. But before any of that happened, she had already shown me that I was capable. Another teacher kept a music program running even after I became the only student who was still actively participating. I just accepted a job as a dispensing nurse at a MAT (methadone and suboxone) clinic. I was told that the dress code is “business casual” but when I went in for an “interview” (it was really more like a chat) the nurse that I would be working with was wearing a cartoon chart scrub top and jeans. That would have been the perfect time for me to ask about dress code again but of course I didn’t. Everyone else appeared to be in more business casual attire. I don’t start for a couple more weeks, so I have time to buy some clothes (my current wardrobe consists of scrubs and ratty leisure wear so I would definitely have to shop for anything business casual). My understanding of the job is that is it extremely patient-care-less. I’m dosing patients, maybe occasional assessments, the worst of it is probably testing urine maybe? I don’t know a whole lot about the gig yet, honestly. So I’m not sure if pockets are a high priority. WWYD? Business casual? Scrubs? Combo (like scrub pants with BC top)

Quick question to my healthcare workers, “ What do you think the best shift to work is between the following”: (5 x 8’s) 8am-4:30pm (4 x 10s) 8am-6pm (3 x 12s) 7am-7pm I’m in Nuclear Medicine so there can be days when there is a lot of down time, and the days can drag. But I love the idea of having 4-5 days off a week, but I realize those 3-4 days on im exhausted. I’m not really cooking dinner or going to the gym how I’d like. Is this something I’d adjust to? I graduated nursing school in September of 2024. I landed a job in my dream unit Cardiac Surgery Stepdown in hopes to move to the ICU once I was comfortable. I was there for 1 year on nightshift which I actually didn't mind. I liked my job but I did feel like I wasn't learning as much as I could. The stepdown has 3:1 ratio and most were stable. After a year I decided to try out the Emergency Department at the same hospital which is Trauma 1. Talk about a change lol. Hello, I am starting my second year teaching and I am feeling terrible. Last year I was freshly graduated but still uncertified. I was hired at a school for 5th grade, but 2 months later switched to kinder because of enrollment. My first year was insane, the abrupt change really set me back and I didn’t get the guidance I needed because by the time they switched me the year had already started rolling. I was working night shift last night, and around 6/6:30 a pt tells me she is nauseous. I know that the night residents are changing shifts and wouldnt answer so I told her I was gonna tell the day resident when they come on the floor. The resident comes at around 6:45 and I let them know immediately. She tells her attending, and when the attending goes in the room the pt tells her that shes been having chest pain and nausea all night and told the nurse around 8pm. This literally cannot be true because I was in and out of the room, and myself and the aids were changing her all night. She was sleeping soundly until 6! I admittedly went into nursing during the pandemic after my science degree because it seemed like a safe option. I liked science, healthcare, and the idea of nursing. I liked learning about medications and how the body works. However, once I started working, I quickly realized it wasn’t what I was looking for. I’ve been looking for options since then and it just feels like no one has further ideas, which had made me feel boxed in. Nursing made me realize I’m very introverted and find the amount of patient interaction in nursing draining. I like diving into the nitty-gritty details, but nursing doesn’t always allow that with the constant tasks to accomplish. Nursing has made me a better worker, a better multi-tasked, and strengthened my critical thinking, but I’d ideally like something where I can really fixate on details and have less interaction with people. 😅 I’m also wanting more flexibility as I’d like the ability to travel more than once a year.
