A lot of educational advocates seem to think that they are able to force outcomes because they really want them to happen. It's interesting to see school districts that set five year targets for getting every student up to grade level. I read a book called The Price: Who's In Charge of America's Schools. The focus is on Newark's school district and how Mark Zuckerburg donated 100 million dollars to improve the district in the 2010s. It goes on and on about schools that declared their commitment to helping kids and how they planned to get kids up to grade level. In just about every case, they failed. They promised to get go 50% proficiency in two years, then 75%, then 100% in some insanely short amount of time. It seemed obvious to me that no such improvement was going to happen, or was even really possible. The modern incarnation is the idea of closing gaps. I hear this so often. Entering year 10 of teaching. I’m currently 6 weeks pregnant and feeling like I got hit by a bus. There’s an overnight field trip scheduled for my 10th week, and at that point I won’t be publicly telling most people I’m pregnant. I don’t see how I’m going to be able to sleep in a cabin with students, etc. when I’m up all night throwing up. So basically this is my 5th contract and I showed up to my first day and they told me the nurse I was supposed to be with for orientation called out so they stuck me with this lady that doesn’t normally orient. Within the first hour she got annoyed with me for acknowledging orders without her seeing them first so once she said that I assumed she wanted me to take kind of a back seat me first day and help out where I can but observe. At the end of the shift apparently she wrote a long email to the manager about how my judgement wasn’t good as a nurse and how I didn’t know the IV pumps and communication system they used.. Hi everyone! I’m an ICU nurse and am working on a unit project to help bridge some knowledge gaps between ER & ICU, specifically when ER has to hold ICU-level patients until they get to our floor. I’m considering doing a “quick & dirty” one-page reference or badge buddy for our ER nurses to use when they’re in a pinch. Some of the feedback I’ve gotten from our ER nurses have been some quick-to-reference titration guidelines for drips, like sedation or pressors. Oftentimes, they start the drips but actually aren’t too familiar with our titration guidelines ever since we’ve been updating them (no shade at all, I get it’s a lot). Another suggestion is what to do when assisting a neurosurgeon placing an EVD emergently at bedside - any random procedure I can think of that they may not commonly do or would call us down for. I’ve asked a few of our nurses who came from ER & even texted some old coworkers for more ideas, but sadly they couldn’t come up with anything else 😭 Any other topics you

I have seen posts like this on here before but I really got my first full glimpse of it tonight. I work in the ED and often change assignments every 4-8hrs. Tonight I had a 12hr assignment and a 10hr hold MS hold. ~500lbs. Incontinent. Via EMS because they tried to get up today and couldn’t get up, insisted it was NEW TODAY!!! And that they ambulate at home w/o assistance. I take some time and grab 2 coworkers to help change and bed bath. Hella wounds everywhere. I explain to the patient that I need to photograph the wounds the EPIC phone for the chart. Pt consents. One of those classic you cannot please pts. They called me into the room at one point to tell me that they don’t like me… worst nurse they’ve ever had etc. then proceeds to question my intelligence by asking how dare I wipe her with wipes, and how dare I use an external cath (that she’s probably going into anaphylaxis from it) I am the one who caused these wounds etc. This person was so large we could not even turn them saf

Rather than considering how much time students spend on screens, the more useful question is whether they are asking questions and solving problems with the help of technology.
A random story from when I was working at a summer center. We were playing that old paper fortune-teller game (the one where you pick numbers and it tells you your "future job"). I filled it with all kinds of careers: engineer, architect, doctor, teacher, and even more modern ones like YouTuber and gamer. Every time a kid landed on a job, they'd immediately say, "No, I don't want that." So I'd ask, "Okay... then what do you want to be?" Almost every single one of them gave me the same answer: "I just want money. I don't want to work." I'd laugh at first and say, "I wish it worked like that too, but how are you going to make money without working?" Their response was always something like, "Lots of people get money without working." The thing that shocked me wasn't just one kid saying it, it was nearly all of them. I did rounds on my patient. Found him foaming at the mouth and panicked. I work at the hospital. I’ve never called a code before, so I got the nurse outside the room. I feel like should’ve called a code first. And called for help.! I was panicked I couldn’t think straight. I’m used to the usual “daughter from California” nonsense. I’m used to the FTT dementia ridden granny whose family isn’t willing to accept that she doesn’t want this because “she’s a fighter”. We’ve all seen that. But lately like this summer I’m starting to really get sick of the families who are shocked and astounded that we can’t cure old age. Ma’am your 98 year old mother has been intubated on a vent for 3 weeks. We explained DAILY the exact difficulties we’re having weaning her and that she doesn’t pass any of the breathing trials. You had ✨3 weeks✨ to come to terms with this. We extubated, she did ok on high flow for a day before the secretions and work of breathing caught up for her and she went into extreme respiratory distress. Hello everyone! I'm currently in my third year of teacher training and expect to graduate as an ESL teacher next year. I've been working as a teacher assistant at a secondary school. I'm not really getting paid, my "payment" is just a small discount on my college tuition. My main concern is that I don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing. So far, I've mostly been monitoring the classroom, helping students when they need assistance, or running small errands for the teacher during class. However, most of the time I'm just sitting in the back of the classroom with nothing to do, and I feel awkward and unproductive. I'm honestly starting to think about quitting because I don't feel like I'm contributing or learning much. Is this normal for a teacher assistant, or should I be taking more initiative? hi all. im really struggling to find a job as a new grad. i had something lined up and it fell through extremely last minute. i live in a fairly rural state so there are very few options available to me in a hospital setting to begin with. but every hospital i apply to has filled their new grad residency spots, and when i apply for anything other than that i immediately get denied. im feeling so lost and worried that if i cant find a nurse residency spot i am never going to get hired. is this normal?? i genuinely had no clue it would be like this trying to get a job after graduation in nursing. for four years all ive heard is “you can get a job anywhere with nursing”. and now im really scrambling and feeling so defeated. submitted by /u/CanSimple6250 [link] [comments]
Inspired by another post. I've had the misfortune of sitting in on a lot of group interviews over the years. This was probably over a decade ago. Resume looks great. Long time PACU nurse at another hospital in town. Someone asks why she's leaving X and wants to come to our hospital and y'all -- This lady just launches into some rambling story about how all the anesthesia attendings at her old job were having sex with the (presumably much younger than her) nurses. She'd finally gotten fed up because everyone was busy having too much sex to get any work done so she went to HR, which put a target on her back because her nurse manager was sleeping with the department head and so she was fired. It was wild. I’m a special education teacher who just started at a new school, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. This isn’t my first teaching job. I’ve worked in several schools over the past 10 years. At two schools, making connections with coworkers felt pretty effortless. People were welcoming, conversations happened naturally, and I never questioned whether I belonged. At most of my other schools, though, it’s been much harder socially. My most recent school was especially difficult—it was an unhealthy work environment overall, and by the end of it I was pretty emotionally drained. Because of that experience, I’m not sure if I’m just carrying some of that with me into this new job. Everyone at my new school has been polite. People say good morning, I’ve had some nice conversations, and no one has been unkind. But it’s pre-planning week, and everyone already seems to have their established friendships and routines. I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. This will be my second year teaching but I always struggle to focus during prep or in the classroom. I feel like I’m always getting pulled into something or my monkey brain goes social time! especially after a tough day with students. My mind just genuinely starts wandering and the one place I can fully focus is my home office after school hours. I do believe on not taking work home and I’m usually good about it but I have a hard time reaching a flow state until I’m actually at home. This year, my prep is also at the end of the day so I’m wary about that. Does anybody have tips or tricks on how you manage your time to focus and complete tasks during prep? Like focusing and being able to complete tasks? Or laying out prep sections for the week? I am a last second hire at a suburban school. I didn’t get to bring my stuff and I’m literally teaching on the fly. You’d think things couldn’t be worse but things have never been better. My high schoolers can read, apologize when redirected, don’t cuss at me, I haven’t heard the N word yet. It’s another world. I have to admit my nervous system was always on edge before. It still is. I look at these kids listening and I wonder what’s their plan? But they’re just sitting there doing their work and it freaks me out, but I love it. If you’re in a failing school my advice is please leave. I started working in home health a few months ago. I loved working with the elderly and listening to their stories. Today I was doing a visit with a patient who looked very sick when I first met her, she has been doing well over the last few weeks and today after my visit she is on her way out with her friend to have a girls day. I just adore older people that are still active and social. I wanna be like them when I grow up, I feel like that is beneficial to their health. I just started my new job (ICU) and I’m SO OVERWHELMED. My most recent hospital experience is Telemetry (8 months) and I tried applying to this hospital, just shooting my shot. I didn’t expect them to actually hire me! I only know Meditech and EPIC is legitimately kicking my butt. We only get 2 weeks (6 shifts) of orientation and I’m drowning . I feel like I need a week just to learn epic alone, let alone all the equipment and procedures and everything else. I need encouragement please, I feel so discouraged. I feel so embarrassed going to work everyday feeling like I don’t belong, being the dumbest one in the room, feeling like they hired me out of pity or something. Everyone has been so nice and kind though, I just don’t think I belong here with the big leagues. I just feel like shit because I ended up having to trade this patient with someone else. I went into his room to give him his meds and he was just *so* mean to me. Like verbally abusive. Calling me an imbecile, a bitch, screaming so loud a male colleague came in and tried to calm him down. I lost my twin brother very suddenly around six months ago and I don’t know if I’m just more sensitive now or what but I started crying while he was screaming at me. In the room. I had leave him with the coworker for a minute. Came back in, eyes puffy, and then he berated me more for leaving. It was like he was happy that he made me cry. Design and setting: Victoria was selected as a case study for Australia, using a mixed-methods approach to examine health and medical university curricula, research organisation policies and research funding between 2020-2025 prior to mandated inclusion. Main outcome measures: Primary outcomes include identification of predefined sex- and gender-related terms in university curricula descriptors and funded grant descriptions; and questionnaire responses from university course coordinators and organisational leads. Results: Data mining across nine Victorian universities (318 courses/3383 units) identified ~93% of units and ~60% of healthcare courses lacked sex and gender terms in their descriptors.
