I work at a hospital as a nurse extern. I figured once I graduated they would hire me on my unit. No, so I applied for two other units and didn’t get hired either. They don’t even call me to let me know. They don’t answer when I call just an automated email a month later saying the position was filled by someone else. Applied again and after multiple weeks not even an email. This is literally the only hospital in town. The application and denial process always take at least a month. I have no pct shifts. I have been told by people at my hospital that I should not work there anyway because it’s awful but I can’t help it… I literally feel like a fool. I hate it. They hired me as an extern but only had me wiping butts and now won’t even give me a shot as a nurse? Has this happened to anyone? Hey yall, I’m a new RN about to graduate in a few months, and I’ve landed a job in the Neuro ICU. I’m posting this because as I’m getting so close to graduation I’ve been feeling a lot of anxiety regarding starting my career as a nurse. I feel really confident in what I’ve learned and my ability to apply my knowledge, but I think getting so close to graduation is making me second guess myself. I feel like I know a lot but I just don’t feel like a “nurse” just yet if that makes sense. I’ll be in a 16 week orientation on the ICU, so I’ll have a lot of time with a preceptor before I’m officially handling my own team, but Im just self-conscious about my skills heading into it. I want to be a great nurse so I think I’m just scared I won’t have what it takes. I’m just wondering if anyone else had the same experience? Teaching can be hard and having a space that works for me helps more than I realized—it can make or break my confidence, regulation, and clarity in the classroom. I just had my first baby 3 weeks ago. I adore her even though she’s truly a sack of potatoes at this point. But I can’t help but yearn to go back to work. I’ve been unemployed since the start of my second trimester (rough pregnancy). Before that, I was a teacher for about 10 years. I LOVE teaching. It’s not for everyone and there’s definitely a reason why so many quit, but it’s definitely the career for me. I’ve been missing the classroom ever since I left last year. Now that the start of the new school year is coming, I’m dying to go back even more. I have a few potential offers but I have so much shame in even considering it. If I accept the job, my baby will be about 6 weeks or so when I start. I would potentially have to put her in some childcare as well, which means her possibly getting sick. More of a vent post than anything. Was in CVICU for 2.5 years and got out because of the stress and constant running around. Didn't even sit for more than 10 minutes at a time. Thought going into pacu would change things. Pacu isn't any easier almost a year in. On Thursday, I had to do post mortem care for a premie baby on the adult side of pacu. Was told it was 18 weeks but when they brought him down, he had to be 5-6 pounds and further than that. Obviously was incredibly attentive to the parents and gave them time to say goodbye. Then I had to undress the baby and put him in a damn fucking bucket and take him to the morgue. They can't come up with more than a fucking bucket? Pushing his little arm through his sleeve still haunts me. Poor mom asked me to keep him wrapped in his blanket. Worst shift ive ever had, 9 years in. My team of 3 (elementary school) plans together. I joined the team two years ago, after 5 years on a different team in the building that I got along well with - we didn’t plan together, but always shared resources. I’ve had a system for my lesson plans for years where I keep everything in a Google sheet with the first tab being links for important documents, websites, and resources, followed by tabs with student info/data, then lessons. I shared this my first year on the team, but no one took me up on any of it or even commented on it, so I assumed they didn’t find it helpful. I’m going into my second year teaching. Last year I went over rules and procedures day one. It was pointless because of so many schedule changes. I was teaching high school last year, but this year will be teaching middle school (6th). Anywho, I am just curious why some say you must start with teaching procedures explicitly, yet others say you absolutely need to jump into content, and then there’s the community building camp. Tl;dr: Just needed to vent. I’ve spent most of my time in education teaching at IB schools, and I can safely say that I cannot stand IB schools. At the end of the day it’s just more work on teachers. You could argue that I just haven’t found the school that “does IB correctly”, and you’d probably be correct. But at least in Northern Virginia in Prince William County, IB is just a framework given to Title 1 schools to increase enrollment. IB and Title 1 DO NOT MIX. If you knew anything about the demographics of our schools you’d know it’s just done for theater. If the county actually gave a damn about following the IB framework, they’d do something about all these behavior problems. But that’s neither here nor there. As the “ugh, BOY PD” posts crop up, so do the “ugh, you’re all so MISERABLE, just LEAVE TEACHING if you hate it so much” comments. And I’m so over it. First, every Positive Polly pulls this crap—equating any complaint with misery and hatred—and with all due respect, if you can’t fathom the concept of someone using an online forum to help them compartmentalize their feelings so they don’t bring negativity into a professional space, you may not be as joyful and in touch with your emotions as you’d like to believe. My district is starting a new policy in the fall. Kids can have their phones on them, but not use them - not even during lunch. Teachers have a cell phone caddy where they put it in during class, although many students just hold onto them in their pocket. It's tough to police them when students say they don't have a phone yet it's in their jeans. Do you have a similar policy and has it worked? I just got hired to teach AP Calculus AB. The school trusts me with it because I was the long-term AP Calculus sub a few years ago and that went well. So I started a new job. Went through nursing orientation. They told us we were gonna have to take a math test, 20 questions and that you could only miss two. You get a retake. But if you miss more than two again, you’re fired. It’s part of their policy and if it’s nowhere in the contract. Has anyone encountered this? I think it’s absolutely bizarre. I have a 30-minute homeroom. According to my administrators, I am supposed to have some type of learning happening. The students should not use HR as "free" time. I don't have a problem with that, but the issue is that the students trickle in at different times. Some of them will be there for the entire 30 minutes while others will arrive with 0 minutes to spare. Honestly, no one else on my grade level gives work during homeroom, but I would like to try. I feel like the kids who are there for 10-30 minutes could be doing something other than playing on Chromebooks. What activities would you suggest? Would you use the work for a grade? How would you handle the students who wouldn't have time to even start the assignment? Would you just go with the flow of the other teachers and ignore the mandate? I transitioned to a different hospital system and went from inpatient med surge to outpatient dialysis. While I do enjoy the job and definitely find it slower paced than my toxic med surge unit……the organization of the unit and incompetence of my coworkers is astounding! So many med errors! First thing is techs on this unit can give iv Heparin which I don’t agree with as it is beyond their scope. People just give meds without going into the electronic medical record. For example techs will give heparin at 8am and then not scan or document for hours! Sadly my unit does not have “The Brain” on epic which does not help with organization. You know how you’re supposed to log in, go into their profile, ask their name and age of birth, make sure it matches the page, scan the med, make sure the med, dose, and route is correct, hit accept and then prep to give. I’m a first year high school teacher in northeast US and I have no idea wtf I’m doing. I’m trying to figure out what week one will look like. I’ll have over 100 students (I only had 50 for student teaching). I’m overwhelmed, intimidated, and social media doesn’t help one bit. I see these reels that give you ideas for organization, planning, and icebreakers. Make a sticky note for every behavior, track and write a minimum of 30 emails home about positive celebrations but another 30 for behavior management. keep records of every moment in the classroom. Make cute decorations, personalize everything, develop catchphrases….do teachers actually do all of these things? Is it all fluff for IG or am I really going to be designing costumes to wear and writing motivational speeches? I love the teaching element. I love student interaction and making connections. So, I have this nurse in her 20s. I’m in my 50s, and I recently transferred to what is considered the top tier unit in my hospital. This was the first time I was giving this nurse report. The first day, the nurse was pretty tough during report. That first night, we had an issue with the PCA. The patient and family were upset, so it was a stressful situation. Forgive me if this isn’t the right place to ask or the right flair. I’ll be entering my 3rd year teaching (10th grade this year. Middle school previously) with severe hip instability and pain due to early onset osteoarthritis . Has anyone submit a formal request for accommodations? If so how did you do that and how did it go? I am getting my own walker, but I didn’t disclose my medical history during my interview as I am the sole provider for my family and can’t risk my housing. My school and district are doing the pendulum swing away from tech. Instead of "use tech when it is best suited and use paper when it makes sense" it is now that any tech is the devil and is the sole reason why we're getting low scores and having behavior problems. I like tech integration but okay. I guess I can do that. The catch? We're still only getting one box of paper per year and one box of 144 pencils. Anything. Else we supply on our own. It might be fine for math, but the texts they're demanding to see the kids physically annotating (even though their test is digital and they can't do that on any of their assessments) are anywhere between 4-12 pages long. So 12 pages for 179 kids plus even two sheets of work and that's half your case right there. We're usually doing a text a week on the pacing guide. We can't even bump the pacing guide and go back to novels either. They took the book room due to a large number of students with disabilities and sent all the books back to the war

I graduated from HGSE’s masters program in ed tech in 2016. It was such a hopeful time. Lots of new companies. Lots of VC money floating around. Worked at an Ed tech startup, got funding to launch a community makerspace in a low income area, and did product design consulting on several STEM/creative toy kits. Spent 2020-2024 running a technical ed program for a gun violence intervention nonprofit. And over the last two years I’ve been running a similar program at a smaller nonprofit. I know the reality of the job market right now, but god damn, Ed tech seems to have been gutted hard. I’m trying to see if this relentless focus on getting AI features into everything Ed tech is actually just an opportunity to do the opposite. I'm gonna be a senior in the fall and I've been applying to externship and PCT positions with no luck which is super disappointing. the fact that I haven't been able to get these jobs just makes me so anxious for when I start applying for residencies this upcoming school year. I don't have hospital experience except for clinical and I feel like i have nothing that could make me stand out to recruiters. I think my area is very competitive for nursing and I'm trying to prepare for the worst case scenario atp.
