I am not a newer nurse, been a nurse for several years, but I switched hospitals and am orienting to my new facility. Last night I was giving IV steroids and oxycodone to a patient. I accidentally and stupidly threw out the vial in the sharps and then stupidly the oxycodone (in its package) as well. This has never happened to me in all my years, but of course it happens as Iām orienting to my new place. I told my preceptor. She said we would waste it in the pyxis, and change my first administration as not given and write a note in the MAR. Then I would retake the oxycodone to actually give to the patient. I put in note that med fell in sharps and wasted with preceptor who happened to be charge nurse. Iām now paranoid though that I should arc it up even more to cover myself? My preceptor and charge nurse said I am fine, but still it is my license on the line. At my old job, Iād probably just call pharmacy just to ask them, but the others said I am fine. Okay, so. Like almost all of us, Iām worried about the plunging ability of students to read. Iāve already started unplugging and de-Chromebooking and returning to pen and paper. One of the students in my uni class talked all the time about how she and her mom (teacher at her old high school) would constantly talk about the other teachers and such, good or bad, how they were doing, "I can't believe xyz happened", what crazy thing they said in front of students or in the break room, etc. This got me wondering about how teachers who are parents of kids in the school they work at have perceptions change about their co-workers or even their own kids. Just taking a moment to reflect on the past year. There was a time where myself as a special Ed teacher did not have an assistant assigned to the room and this went on for 3 months - due to the ages, ratio and needs of the students this is required and written into some IEPs for students who need a 1:1 so with that alone, compliance was not being met. I didnāt outright complain, I advocated for my students and their needs, I gathered data to support it. In the most respectful and data driven way possible, I made the classes needs know without it being me as an individual being the squeaky wheel. SIENA HEALTHCARE (Named misspelled for legal reasons) So the skilled nursing home I currently work at has been a work in progress for a long time.. we had a nursing meeting this morning and the DON was telling us floor nurses to ensure that we are having the CNAs do check and changes every two hours. And I simply told her they only give us about 20 washcloths per night and we have 29 patients in a unit.. most of the CNAās have to limit the amount of times they are changing people simply because we do not have wipes or washcloths.. how are we supposed to change 20+ people with that. I told her Iām going to start counting every single wash cloth we get and documenting the times we get them. She said that information was very helpful and she will look into it. During report today I had a comment made that really just say funny with me. For some background, Iām on orientation in a surgical ICU (TL2), as I just switched hospitals and was working at a smaller hospital in their ICU which operated much like a MICU. Some of the nurses on this floor are very particular and āType Aā. They want a whole mini book on the patient. Iāve noticed this and tried to make sure Iām building reports that include as much as possible while considering things that I may find minuscule and ensuring I include them to try to meet the needs of other nurses who donāt operate like I do (which is totally fine). I gave a pretty good report IMO. Decent time-line, head to toe, relevant/out of range labs, drips, lines, etc. There was only one thing, maybe two, that was asked by receiving nurse I didnāt know. I had a patient go under full anesthesia to get a fish hook removed from a limb. No blood vessels, nerves or other structures were in danger. The patient was simply too afraid to get it done with lidocaine, a nerve block or even conscious sedation. So they underwent surgery to get the hook point pushed through, snipped off and the hook pulled back out (and the subsequent wash out). It took less than five minutes. Didnāt even need stitches or packing. A foam adhesive dressing (like a band-aid), antibiotics, tetanus shot and otc pain medicine. I'm sharing a deeply personal experience that affects/influences my career as an educator. I'm intentionally leaving out identifying details because I don't want anyone identified or accused. I'm genuinely looking for advice from fellow educators. I just completed my first year as a full-time high school English teacher in New Jersey and that's part of why I'm struggling with this. When I was 15, turning 16, I became involved with a statutory situation with an adult man who was 31/32 years old. The relationship lasted approximately 18 months to 2 years. During that time, he was mentally, emotionally, sexually, and psychologically abusive. Years later, while I was earning my Master's in Teaching, I unexpectedly walked into one of my graduate classes and discovered that the perpetrator was also a student in the program, in my same class! Not sure if anyone out there gets me on this, but I have to say it. Don't misunderstand me here: It's not like I came out here to magically end up in the Bay area making 3 trillion gold doubloons in a week, I'm not delusional. I HAD to move to the west coast for housing reasons completely outside of my career. But now the CA BRN has me upside down by the short n curlies. I'm a brand new grad nurse (May) and just passed the NCLEX last Tuesday for the state I'm originally from (VA). The big beautiful (ugly) bill is cutting Medicaid funding which is currently making mine and everyone's job so much harder. Our resources got cut, no more overtime, and more duties are put on our charge nurses. If a nurse misses their break due to lack of help, the charge nurse get sent to the metaphorical guillotine. Our cool management is now micromanaging everyone just so they don't get reprimanded by their higher ups who are trying to save money due to these budget cuts. Hello, I am a 4th grade teacher in an elementary school with a very high population of English learners, like 75%+ of my class. The vast majority of my students, even my non-ELs, come to me reading 2-3 grade levels below. If you know 4th grade, you know that the ELA texts are incredibly complex and require a lot of vocabulary and background knowledge. We use HMH Into Reading (blegh). With that background, does anyone have an annotation strategy that works across genres and that the students would be able to utilize on computer-based state testing? I want to give them a concrete strategy to break down complex texts, but if itās dependent on marking up a text it wonāt help them on state testing where they can only highlight or use blank scrap paper. Iām around 6 months off orientation and I feel like this is my lowest point yet, especially since they are so close together. I honestly just feel really bad because I didnāt realize what I did was wrong and I know this is a big gap in my knowledge. The first mistake that came up was that I was giving dilaudid and I had to waste to give the appropriate dose. I wasted with another nurse and unfortunately I accidentally threw away the bottle in the med room. I realized this in the ptās room and realized I had nothing to scan. So I went out and asked another nurse to waste the remaining so I can pull another so I had something to scan. But when a kid is just completing apathetic and not turning anything in or participating in any activities, the state should be stepping in to get them back on track. I plan on breast feeding/pumping, but I just got my class schedule for next year and I have last block prep and last lunch. This means I would be teaching from 7:15 to 12:30 with no breakā¦but am I entitled to an earlier one if I need it for pumping? So, after many promises last year of admin saying they will ensure I have an actual yearbook class, working my ass off to build up a program I was not experienced in, and getting tons of kids passionate about making a yearbook I was presented with two yearbook classesā¦. That are filled with kids who did not take the prerequisites to get into yearbook. Half these kids I donāt know and they let in others who barely passed the first time around. They kicked out one of my editors and all 4 of my experienced seniors I was going to put in leadership positions. Leaving me with 1 junior and 4 sophomores who have never done yearbook but took the pre requisites that can do work and then 20 random students I can do nothing with. I gave them a list of 21 kids who had proved themselves responsible and capable who all confirmed with me that they were so excited to be in the class and had made the yearbook before. evidently that did not matter whatsoever. Preferably middle school teachers. I am a middle school elective teacher, but kids canāt choose my class. Students are assigned to my class in random. There are very little elective classes available in my middle school which I find so odd. When I was in middle school, we had home ec, workshop, drama, language classes, etc that we could choose to take. However, my current middle school does not have any of those offerings. I know a lot depends on funding, but the district I work at is definitely not low on funding and the middle school I went to was not in a wealthy area. What gives? Obviously HIPAA is super important but does anyone else feel like itās really just used to punish and intimidate nurse more than itās actually used for its intended purpose. God forbid you talk too loudly at the nurses station about āthe patient in 5ā, but somehow answering phone calls and giving out patient info is ok because someone said they are the patientās relative? Even with the āpass codeā system. Okay so a creative family member got the code and then were given PHI over the phoneā¦ how is that our fault? What about the hallway beds in the ER are HIPAA compliant? Or the curtained off exam rooms for that matter? This will be my 8th year as a co-teacher. I've had 5 co-teachers since the start, and the majority of them have been great to work with. We work well together, plan well, deal with behaviors somewhat well (as much as we can, etc.) and it was an overall good experience. This year, that all may change. Our school has a big change in schedule as far as teachers moving subjects and new teachers coming in. So I expected a change in my schedule already. But what I didn't expect was who I would be paired with this year. To keep it short, I have not heard great things about her. I don't know the specifics, but the 3 SPED co-teachers she was with in the last 2 years have told me to "be prepared - she needs a LOT of support". The students walk all over her.
