Hi everyone! I am going to be a second year first grade teacher in the fall. While overall this year was a success, I did have some issues with classroom management (not based on anything my admin said, I just felt like my room was chaos at times). When my paraprofessionals were in the room, things would go pretty smooth and I’d be able to teach effectively and it would be great. However, we had lots of staffing switches, especially towards the end of the year. Out of my 19 kids, while most of them listened to me no matter what, I had maybe 5 boys that would be silly when my paras weren’t there. And the para wasn’t assigned to any of these kids. They would do things like say no to work, wander the classroom during independent work time or teaching time, talk during lessons, and I had one that even would try to make a “show” to make other kids laugh. I really want to move away from the daily paper sheets as most kids don’t bother to carry them around or they feel embarrassed having to get them each morning. So, this memory just came to me today, and I need to share it with someone. Hey, you are the lucky "someone." In about 2005, before I really knew a lot about email, and all things computer related, my special ed director 'blind copied' me on some emails to a support staff (therapist) in which she was chewing him out for several different things. I was the "team leader," but that comes with no real authority. I would just help newer teachers learn things paperwork or classroom management related, even though I had only been teaching a few years at this time. Anyways, I digress. Whats up yall! I am a recently licensed RN in Ny. I am also of North African descent, and in my early 20s. My family supported me becoming an RN, but I am occasionally getting comments about it. Recently they have been asking me to find someone to marry, but they are saying things like "you need to advance your education, not many women want to marry a nurse." This deeply troubled me. I think I am a successful young man with a 6 figure salary, and pension. I understand that I am in a female-dominated profession, but like really? Hi everyone! Okay so I last year was my very first year of teaching fresh out of college. I came in so excited and ready to meet all of my co workers until I realized what they were saying about me. Right when the year began other people started telling me this girl on my team is claiming that I'm bullying her, she was also new to teaching?? I am in the process of transitioning careers- museum professional to teaching- and am looking mostly for advice. First question, do school systems really hire late/last minute? I have seen so many things about how schools and the school system hire for positions last minute or towards the end of the summer, super close to the start of the school year. Is that true? How are new teachers meant to prepare if they get maybe a couple of weeks to get things set up and organized? On a stretch of nights, I woke up today and ate a bit and then got this horrible nausea and dizziness, so I called in. The charge nurse was upset saying he’ll have to “close beds” and that I can’t call in so late. It was 5:30pm and shift start is 7pm. Moving to a new school and new grade level, and I’m hoping to start buying for my classroom library. Originally was going to hit yard sales but then I just got the urge to buy them brand new books, it’s just I teach on what are called “community” schools which is very low income, because I’ll be honest low income here means like they likely live in a shelter, group home, foster care, rely on the school or food bank for food, so on. I finished my sixth consecutive night shift and left work yesterday at 8:00 AM. Before sleeping, I cleaned my house and went to a doctor’s appointment. I finally went to bed around 3:30 PM. I woke up once around 6:30 AM to use the bathroom, then went back to sleep and finally got up at 2:30 PM today. Now I’m already back at work for another night shift. This has been my routine since April 2025. I know it sounds extreme, but after multiple consecutive night shifts, my body sometimes just crashes. I’m grateful I was able to recover. The second career fantasy thread got me thinking about this more seriously than I expected. Not in a dramatic way, just genuinely curious what people would actually do if they walked away. For me it would probably be something with my hands, maybe carpentry or some kind of trade work. There is something appealing about a job where you finish your shift and you can physically see what you built or fixed. No charting about it. No one calls you at 2am to ask if you documented it. Nursing skills transfer more than people give credit for. The critical thinking, staying calm when everything is going sideways, managing difficult personalities all day. None of that maps cleanly onto a resume outside of healthcare though. Recommendations on the best apps for catalouging, organizing students and lesson plans and materials. Currently I have been using a seperate file for each student with notes, Google Docs and Excel. I primarily teach Business, Medical, Intermediate to Advanced English and Fluency Training, and in most cases the classes are adjusted to the individual student's industry, specialty and goals. So, in general I'm not really able to use the same lessons with every student. I also create a lot of my own learning materials. Some general, some specialized topics. I work in LTC and have for years, so I’ve had hundreds of hospice patients at this point and have seen many of them die. I have absolutely no issue giving comfort meds, I think they are absolutely necessary for a peaceful death in a lot of cases. However, this one has made me question a lot. I currently have a resident who has been on hospice for a few months now. They are definitely making a decline and had a really bad week this week, but they weren’t declared to be actively dying. They are receiving more hospice visits though. Yesterday this resident seemed to be normal and baseline. They have dementia and are normally a wanderer so that’s what they were doing. They fall quite often, but they have for the whole year they have been here and years before when they were at home. In LTC the resident has a right to fall, so no restraints are allowed. The hospice nurse asked me if I had given them any meds yet that day, and I hadn’t because he wasn’t agitated or didn’t seem to be in pain.
*trigger warning- bugs* Charge RN in medical ICU here- we found maggots in one of our patients mouths today and I’m wondering what the likelihood is of the eggs originating from our unit (I.e did one of these fucking flies lay eggs in our patients mouths????) Patient admitted 6/28 for sepsis and was intubated 7/5. Maxed on 4 pressors now. ENT came to evaluate and ultimately said nothing they could do because pt is obviously too unstable for OR. But they made a comment saying that the maggots have been there for a while due to the amount of them. Upon further research it seems like the eggs are layed and hatched with a day. I received a job offer last Wednesday, and the contract was sent to me the following day. However, I have an interview scheduled for Monday with a school/position that I strongly much prefer. I asked the first school for a few extra days to review the contract and told them I’d get back to them early next week. I don’t want to sign anything until I see how the Monday interview goes. I expect the Monday interview will be with a recruiter, and I probably won’t meet the principal until a few days later. RNs complain about CNAs and Clerk, CNAs complain about RNs and Clerk, Clerks complain about RNs and CNAs. It’s just non stop complaining and no one wants to (or can) do anything to make it better. As a clerk I have seen bad RNs, CNAs, and Clerks. I try to get along with everyone but it feels like a test of patience and professionalism. Call bells going off and RNs running in to help patients use the bathroom when the CNAs are sitting playing with their phones. RNs yelling at CNAs for having questions. Clerks literally just sitting there doing nothing. No one communicates professionally or acts professionally at all. I don’t expect anyone to be corporate but at least have some professionalism. Working as a clerk wasn’t my calling it was just the only job I could get and I plan to transfer to a job I like within my hospital. I’m an LPN, I work in med-surg. And I’m sure many of you can guess, based on the title, what company I work for. Every day, I’m terrified for the well being of my patients, and I’m terrified for my license. Each nurse has 7 patients, and each PCT has 20+ patients. We recently had several nurses quit with no replacement staff being hired. Nurses have been fired for trying to unionize, management regularly documents that we clocked out for lunch even when we didn’t. Nurses feel pressured to clock out for lunch but work through their lunch so they don’t have to stay late. I have a year before I’m an RN. My employment options are limited. I know many of us or some get fall breaks or extended Spring breaks but to me it seems like our breaks are not long enough in the Summer. Yes, they added teachers to get a 3 day Fall break in October for us but to me something doesn't add up. Here it is July 11th and teachers go back 1st week of August. I am writing here about using AI to generate content in ways that could reasonably be detected by others, such as assignment creation, emails, and written comments (I originally used a compound word that started with an "f" and ended with "back," but it flagged my post as spam, so I changed it to "teacher comments" throughout even though I strongly prefer my original word choice). Every time this issue comes up people point out that teachers and students have different roles, and that it’s not hypocritical for teachers to use a tool that students can’t. Which, yes, our roles are different. I can do lots of things my students can’t, some of it on the job. Point taken. But that’s not the real issue with using AI to generate content in the classroom. Education, especially in K-12, is a two-way relationship. We create the learning environment, and students literally and metaphorically show up for it each day (in theory, at least). I keep hearing about the "problem with AI" so many seem to be having, but to be honest, I'm not seeing it. What I see in general is 95% of my students have a deep hatred of AI to the level of AI use is as socially acceptable as selling meth. They are deeply offended when a teacher uses it. This isn’t me trying to be deliberately obtuse or contrarian, but I was just wondering about this at work today. I have been working as a kindergarten teacher in an affluent predominantly white community for several years and have noticed an interesting trend among some of our students. I just started working in an emergency department that has a locked psych unit. I'm new to the ED but I knew I would have to rotate through this unit. What wasn't clear to me was that I would be assigned to the psych unit once every three shifts. I honestly don't know if I can handle it. I'm not the worst at handling psych/behavioral/mental health crisis type of stuff but it's definitely not my thing. I’m going into my fourth year teaching and pretty excited for it except for a few things. The main one I’m nervous about is that my schedule is going to be a 6 period schedule with a 5th period prep. I teach middle school (all grades, elective), and I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a prep in the middle of the day the past three years. I’m really nervous to be on this different schedule. My teacher friends tell me that having a prep towards the end of the day usually means I won’t have any energy to be productive at all. Recovering alcoholic here. I was in the ER about once a month for a year stretch due to extreme withdrawals. Each time, even in the complete turmoil of my physical and mental state, I had an acute sense of the disappointment in your faces, or maybe just the pure sadness of having to watch someone continuously do this to themselves. She fights the rest of us when it’s time for lights to go off (usually between 9-10pm, and obviously they’re not OFF off just dimmed). She skips around at 4:30 am and cranks the lights back on. I’m a new teacher, and I was put into this PLTW training; TLDR this curriculum training is a huge waste of time and money. The lessons are completely random and I’m very confident that a non engineer wrote this entire curriculum. The materials section is by far the worst. In addition to being completely out of place from the previous lessons, there’s very little substance in them. The substance that’s in them is flat out wrong or poorly explained. My advice for anyone forced to take this training: be nice to the trainers but just finish the work as soon as possible. The other night the nurse I worked with was complaining to the supervisor about how hard the day shift nurse was on him during report. Supervisor asked why and he explained she was upset because he didn’t do the q4 bladder scan ordered. Supervisor of course asks why he didn’t do it if it’s ordered that way. Because of course the following nurse would be aggravated and now she’s aggravated because he just told her. He starts arguing with her that she’s wrong too because, “I asked ChatGPT and it said I didn’t have to do it if the patient was sleeping”. Supervisor tells him ChatGPT didn’t write the order so if doesn’t allot for sleep, then it still has to be done. He hits her with, and I do indeed quote, “ChatGPT has all the knowledge in the world, it knows more than every doctor in the world, I’ll trust it first” I’m not shocked healthcare workers are using chatGPT, there’s always dumb apples, but what a wild statement. Hi fellow nurses, last night I had a very violent, aggressive patient who spat and kicked one of the CNAs very hard when she was trying to take vitals. This patient was brand new to our unit (a transfer) and because it was shift change, I barely had a moment to sit down and read through all of the notes thoroughly, but the few things that I did read is that this patient has always had a sitter/in q2h bilat wrist restraints (we were too short staffed last night for a sitter so we had him on careview monitoring), and the other thing was the family specifically stated they do not want their spouse on any antipsychotic medications. After my CNA notified me she had been assaulted, I immediately messaged the Provider to get oral Zyprexa added as a 1x dose. I just wanted to share in a way possible for people to know with anxiety, anything is possible! I avoided this test since I graduated with my bachelor’s and master’s in education. Today I can say I passed my teacher certification subject area exam today. It was the exceptional student education K-12 . I feel so grateful and happy about it! I never thought I could do it because I didn’t think it was possible, I was so afraid. Even though I taught in different settings so I had knowledge.
