I am in my 3rd year of teaching and I’m getting close to quitting. This is the 1st year where I’ve had 2 preps instead of 1 and I feel like a 1st year teacher all over again with my 2nd prep. Thankfully the previous teacher of the class left me all of her old material to work with so I haven’t had to make anything new yet but trying to organize it all and have it ready on time is killing me. I’m maybe a week ahead at best prepping both classes, my 2nd prep I have to make sure to reserve the lab room when I need it, grading takes forever for both classes, and I have more students this year than ever before since we had a massive layoff this summer. It’s like I never have any free time to do anything. Any free time I do have is spent going to doctors appointments due to some recent medical issues. Those offices are far away since my school is outside of a city and traffic sucks driving home from those appointments. Weekends don’t feel like weekends anymore and all I can do is stress over
Of course, this is not all paraprofessionals , only every single one I've ever worked with. I have/have had several kids with paras/behavior specialists, and the ones who are there to manage 504 students' behavior are the most useless. Just to use specific examples from my classroom/school: the paras that I am assigned sit on their phones in the corner of the room with hoodies on, hoods up (when even the students aren't allowed to do that.) They don't look up from their phones, they don't do anything, it's like they don't even notice that their students are running around the classroom, yelling, or otherwise making a scene. Meanwhile, the para or whoever who mans the hallway (I'm not totally sure what their title is) just sits there and cracks jokes with the kids. For example: I sent a kid out for rampant disrespect and acting out (7th grade). A few minutes later, the para brings him back about to laugh and says "Why did you send him out? He told me you told him you'd buy him Popeyes."
I have a couple of girls in the same class period that have an issue with everything. One of them decides something is different than the way she would do it, and has to loudly comment. The other girl joins in as well, although she is quite pleasant when we are one-on-one. For example, the students received a pretty light science textbook, maybe around 200 pages. Significantly smaller than the other textbooks they have. I reminded them they can keep the textbooks at home, since I have a class set. "What's even the point of having a textbook if we leave it at home?" With the stankiest face and rudest tone available. "Yeah miss, when am I ever going to need it 🙄" Like damn, that's what you have an issue with? Would you prefer the alternative of having to carry it around every day? I live in Orange County, CA. I just got my Bachelor’s in Spanish and have started the Single Subject credential program at CSULB. I’ve heard that recently job prospects in the education field in OC have been extremely scarce and ridiculously competitive. I want to teach high school Spanish and am hoping that this subject specifically will give me somewhat of an edge compared to Social Studies or English, but I can’t help but feel worried that I’m chasing a career with extremely slim chances when it comes to getting hired. I understand the importance of networking and while I sub in the meantime and do my observational hours I plan to make as much meaningful connections as possible. I am tired after a long day and procrastinating life tasks.... long post incoming 😔 "They can't MAKE your kid serve detention. It requires parental consent. I refused to allow my oldest to serve a detention for being tardy three times. She doesn't drive. How TF are you going to punish her for something outside her control? This has been my biggest struggle as a teacher. Am I supposed to constantly have kids bored or doing minuscule tasks because they completed the work already or am I supposed to leave the other kids behind who need the extra time and support? I’ll just give an example from a few years back. I was teaching grade 4/5. I would have half the class finish something and half needed more time or one to one help. It was a lot of non English speakers with little to no support. The EA we had worked one to one with an intensive needs child. So I started a craft drawer for the kids that always finished early and it was either read a book or do a craft so I could help the others. They weren’t allowed to rush their work or whatever to do crafts but it sure kept them busy afterwards and they kept it clean and organized. He's in 4th and for some reason the 4th grade team gave a team presentation in the library, the rest of the grades each give it in the classroom with only your kids' teacher. Whatever. One of the teachers is giving her presentation, and instead of pausing so we could all hear the announcement, she just raises her voice and keeps talking over the announcement! We're in the library, maybe 80 parents gathered, and now I can't pay any attention to the lady getting louder, and I can't understand a word of the announcement over her. We are getting a new building next year so the budget on this one is essentially zero. We know it's black mold; a few of my coworkers have run at-home kits and it's bad bad. When the roof leaks the ceiling tiles come down and sometimes also cause major flooding. We've had to cancel school due to flooding. They are always painting over our ceiling tiles with killz to cover the grey/brown spots. We are a public school. Anyway, I wasn't sick over the summer at all. Last school year, however, I was fever-sick most of the time. Coming into school with 100°f+ fevers because I was out of sick days. And guess what? We are at the end of the second week and I'm sick AGAIN. I suspect the exposure to the mold is killing my immunity. Our reading curriculum is Imagine Learning which has first graders learning about birds for FIVE months straight. The lessons are ridiculous and ask 6 year olds to follow a series of five step directions and requires a minimum of 3+ anchor charts per lesson. Our district is obsessed with this curriculum. They have children using a Frayer model and doing close reads for 100 minutes on one text. First grade. The handwriting tells them to thrust their rockets forward and orbit planet O. 😵💫 Our math curriculum has no modeling or explicit teaching, jumps around, and expects students to know how to sort data without telling them anything. You give them a T chart and Venn diagram and they’re supposed to figure it out themselves. Today one of my team members asked if we could all meet as a team of four. I figured it was to go over anything I needed to know for back-to-school night next week. Since my new school is way more organized and busy than my old school, I've been feeling a little overwhelmed with the outside of classroom stuff. In the class, things have been going well. The kids are working, we're having good class discussions, and I'm branching out more with how I teach things since my kids are pretty high. Turns out the whole meeting was because I wasn't stamping the kids planners each day and not responding to group texts. After some rooms got swapped at the start of the year, I saw that an empty room had tables where students could comfortably sit in pairs. We currently have these… triangle desks? Imagine a right triangle, and students sit at the hypotenuse. It’s awful and I hate it. Anyways, I got 15 tables swapped for my 30 desks today! I LOVE IT. I can comfortably walk between rows and pairs instead of having these students twist their bodies to look at the board in clusters of 4. Everyone is facing forward, everyone has a partner. For context, I (20F), am a dedicated substitute teacher at a middle school. Luckily, my school is pretty lax when it comes to pants, and my go to comfort pants in winter are flare leggings. I just went back to work yesterday, and GOD is it humid and disgusting (East coast). I deal with hyperhidrosis, and I’m quickly realizing that polyester won’t work for me in this weather. It also doesn’t help that our a/c doesn’t kick in until an hour after the children arrive. I’m sick of coming home with an odor that i can smell halfway through the day. I’ve looked for cotton leggings, NONE OF THEM HAVE POCKETS! I can’t seem to find any option with a breathable fabric & pockets that aren’t sweatpants. They are, in fact, sixth graders. I just wrapped up a 45-minute class with them. This is the second week of school. They know the routines. They know the expectations. They cannot function independently. At all. The smallest, easiest directions require hand-holding for them. Even something as simple as "get out a piece of loose leaf" will be met with multiple hands raised, multiple questions, complete helplessness as to how to overcome this impossible task. About half of the questions they ask are completely unrelated to anything we're doing at that moment. The other half are mostly manifestations of helplessness. Substitute taught at a private school in a gifted class yesterday, observations so far: * Every single child brought a pencil and was essentially on task all day. * Routines are well oiled machines. Phones go in a small jail at the start of the day, but most of the times even this isn't necessary as they just keep them in their lockers. Admin is extremely supportive and encouraging! * Attendance is itself done via swipe cards and is taller automatically. The swipe cards serve dual purpose as student IDs and Hall Passes (left at the front when using washroom). Perhaps the dream of curriculum compaction is well and alive. Most students also had tutors to further reinforce their academics. This is year 15 for me and I think it gets a little bit worse every year. I know kindergarteners are little, but they really should be past the screaming the way toddlers do for a really long time. I just had hall duty and legitimately it sounded like we had an infant in the cafeteria. I’m not referring to a child with special needs either. Also children who refused to walk and adults resort to carrying them around again, not special needs. And it’s not as though it stops at kindergarten for some of them. Two years ago, a third grader who is the same height as me (I know height doesn’t mean maturity, but it made the whole thing even more astounding) she was screaming exactly the same way. I had been teaching for 13 years at that time and that was a first. I’m simply venting. I had to get this off my chest somewhere because it is infuriating. I just got hired at a new school with a relatively small team and all I hear all day is what is AI generated. The images, the diagrams, the descriptions, the summarized texts. They take a screenshot of the work book and then upload it to ChatGPT to create an easier version for the slower children. Yesterday somebody handed me a worksheet (as a substitute lesson) for a song where characters are described wearing different clothes and they generated three characters with clothes so the students could find the mistakes, ugh. It bothers me on one hand that they complain about their students handing in essays that are AI generated while they themselves choose the easy route 9 out of10 times. Like, damn! You studied this for five years, apply your skills! Use your craft! Be proud of what you hand out! Apparently, I'm the only teacher my students have who doesn't say that. And a part of me wonders if that means I need to be stricter, but also, if we get through everything on time, why would I hold them after? Also, why would I hold a whole class after the bell if only a few kids are talking? I'd just hold those kids after. CA Assembly Bill 506, which mandates that "administrators, employees, and regular volunteers at youth service organizations complete child abuse and neglect reporting training and undergo fingerprint-based background checks" has been interpreted to include field trip chaperones. Meaning any parent wanting to chaperone a trip, even if they won't ever be alone with a child, will be required to fork over $75-$85 for fingerprinting, as well as jump through a ton of hoops in regards to paperwork. I work at a Title 1 school and there's no way our parents can afford this. It was *already* a stretch getting parents to take a day off of work to volunteer. I'm so frustrated. Last week, a para was removed from campus after an allegation that she was violent toward a kindergarten student. This was witnessed by another para, who reported it to admin. There’s even video evidence from a security camera. She was told by admin to keep it hush hush because now the matter was under review by HR. This para, bless her heart, is a well known gossip. She told me every last detail, but she claims Im the only one she told. I didn’t tell anyone. One of my VP’s though must suspect something because I as well as multiple other staff members were all called into her office one by one and asked what we knew about the para’s absence. I told her I didn’t know anything and hadn’t really noticed her absence (I don’t really work with her and have said maybe three sentences to her in the six years I’ve worked at this school). This week my 15 year old sophomore son was suspended because he was using a THC vape in the bathroom at school. My husband and I are disappointed with him at this time, and we’re also upset. He’s in all honors classes, and we didn’t expect this from him. We’re going to do what is needed to get to the root of the issue, and we will do our best to find a way to prevent this from ever happening again. I just happened to be standing in the exact spot that the student decided to flip out and lunge at the other student. There have been small successes where a teacher or a small group go all in and it leads to better outcomes for students, but these things weren’t replicable or sustainable. why do some people become teachers if they can’t handle kids with a needs? The other teacher in my grade is beyond ill prepared to teach any student with behavior or educational needs. She can’t handle discipline, hates teaching unions, and thinks that Number sense isn’t worth her time to teach. Now I have to take in extra responsibilities because she can’t keep her students in line. She looses them during the day, she’s late to every recess duty, and lets them lie to her. Has anyone witnessed something like this? A teacher worked as a special education teacher. Then decides to leave it for classroom teaching but for the same school. They accepted the contract as a classroom teacher but a week before school was forced back into special education because they couldnt find a replacement for the role they left. The contract that was signed was for classroom teacher. They were basically told sped or resign. The problem is we are in an area where neighboring districts won't pick you up after a certain date because of an agreement if you already signed a contract. I have always been the “chill, nice, fun teacher” because I was relatable, relatively relaxed, but still held students accountable. However, I’m at a new district this year and was called “strict” today because I got on some students about getting out of their seats and yelling when we ended class 3 minutes early. I was having a discussion with my mother, who works as a special education teacher’s aide. I’m an English teacher, and we return to school after Labor Day. During our conversation, she said that students should attend school year-round because they lose so much knowledge over the summer and that two months is simply too long. I have proximity, I call out positive examples, I have a strong tone, I get on eye level, I stand up tall like an authority, I make connections one on one during independent work when there's time, I explain routines step by step and have them repeat back to me, we model routines, I use kid friendly language, I model that making mistakes is OK and trying again is good, I don't make it about "I like" or "I want," I move their seat, I hold their hand, I call them out by name or tap their shoulder, i use visual reminders, I make them try it again, I make them practice before the expectation, I tell them I've contacted their parents, I use a loud voice, I use a quiet voice, I use choral callbacks like one two eyes on you or ago ame or a chime. To bring a little levity to the start of the year, what is your most uncomfortable thing you had to explain to a student. Mine was a 16 year old boy, I am his mother’s age. I know he was trying to process but was going about it in a wildly inappropriate way. I was teaching a 11th grade trades math class. The student and his two friends came in laughing and started sharing what he saw with the other students in the class. He essentially told the entire class that he went to the bathroom this morning at home and a dildo (?) was attached to the wall. He lives alone with his mom. He was telling anyone who would listen. I had to pull him aside and explain why that is private information, he needed to respect his mother’s privacy. I wrestled with calling home, ultimately chose not to. I'm writing this because I keep seeing posts in this sub about state-level policy stuff that doesn't actually land until it's your classroom problem, and 109 is about to become exactly that. A few things from the actual text of the measure that should matter to anyone working in a Colorado school: The bill gives the Commissioner of Education discretion over enforcement, but says nothing about how schools should comply. That means the implementation guidance is going to trickle down to district admins, who will hand it to athletic directors, who will hand it to coaches. Which means me. And you, if you're a coach or PE teacher or any educator who supervises athletics. The text doesn't define how sex is verified. I've been trying to imagine this in practice. Do I ask a kid for their birth certificate before they can suit up for a game? Do I look at them and decide? Does the kid's parent need to provide documentation? The bill doesn't say. Our district just approved a 4 day school week starting next year. It will add about an hour the day Monday-Thursday to make up instruction time. I'm not exactly a huge fan of the idea, TBH. I always roll my eyes when I hear that. I’ve been in three different school district and I hear that at least once at a PD. School isn’t Disney World. Also, there’s no lesson engaging enough that can compete with a dopamine inducing iPad. I hate making admin. always out to be the bad guy, but they always come off that way. It’s not our fault some of these parents don’t want to bring their child(ren) to school for XYZ reason. Hey all, I am a highschool teacher in California. My school specifically serves a population of students who failed or struggled so much in regular schools that they need to make up credits with us. I am an English teacher in my second year, and each quarter we rotate classes so I have gone through four cycles at this point with 4 class periods per cycle of setting expectations, building rapport, and balancing behavior issues with support and discipline. I’ve learned a LOT but none of my class periods have been as hard to handle as my second period this year in our first quarter. I teach a mix of juniors and seniors, and this class is my largest. Administration grouped all the low level readers into one class period because I was willing to work privately with a few low level readers last year and was really successful with them. I have several students who are friends with each other and have no problem ignoring me when I’m up front giving instruction. Proximity doesn’t help, stopping
