I could really use some advice. I apologize for the length. I was hired as an English teacher in California. The job offer letter that was provided for my intern credential states that it is for an English position, and the listing on EdJoin also lists that it is for an English position. There was optional training about a week before required orientation meetings for new teachers in the district and for my particular school. Unfortunately, I had to miss this optional training due to my previous job. I now believe this was a massive mistake, as apparently the two new English teachers found out their courses at that time. I was told on a Friday—with school beginning on a Wednesday—that I must teach an advanced drama and an intermediate drama class in addition to three English classes. I have zero experience with drama (no classes in high school or college, no knowledge of lights or set design, nothing). I was told to use AI and they would hire another person to direct the play. On the first workday this school year I was called by the principal to a conference room where the two top district HR people were sitting. They told me they have a "credible report" that I have been using illegal substances. I was obviously caught completely off guard. They would not show me the information they had, and told me that I needed to go take a urine drug test at a local clinic, of which they had already made an appointment for me. They asked if I had been using illegal substances, to which I said no. I told them I have been to local legal tobacco or vape shops and used their products, which are completely legal here. They told me that that doesn't matter because those products are "unregulated." I left really upset and went to go do the urine test. I assume I will fail it. I recently moved out of state and was only offered one job that I had to take at a charter credit recovery high school. I’ve taught 6th grade for 4 years so already a big adjustment. I was told I teach for 20-30 minutes and then the kids work on credit recovery on their computers. Hours are 7-4 with one planning period a week because of the minimal work. Students enter the building tomorrow, but here’s what’s come up this past week. Tuesday I met the teacher I was taking over for. I asked her if we could sit down and discuss how things go, tips, methods, content etc. her response was “maybe if I have time”. She got back to me Friday at 3pm, so I just emailed all my questions but haven’t heard back yet. We were promised a new teacher binder with schedule, handbook etc by Friday, we never go it. I am going into the second week of school. My plan is to have a weekly outline of what I will be teaching during different time blocks and the general unit/lesson number. It’s taking time trying to learn the curriculum, the tech, and everything else being a new teacher at a new school entails. I don’t think even if I wanted to I could plan every lesson down to the detail more than a few days in advance of teaching it. Is it acceptable to have my lesson and content ready about 1-2 days before I actually teach that lesson or should I be aiming to be further ahead? Everything is going smooth so far, I kicked off some of the academic units last week, went over classroom expectations and routines, and to be honest it was an extremely smooth and successful week. I am just stressed trying to get my head on straight and knowing how far ahead I need to have content developed to be successful. Everything we have is Ai planned. Every questions, slide, and test. Half of it isn’t even coherent, the other half isn’t even on the objective. So I teach middle school science. Love it! One of the things I detest though is kids not bringing paper. Like a month after school starts, they just don’t care. I’ll email their mom and the mom will go buy paper, but the kid doesn’t bring it to class. So this year they get a piece of paper that I exacto knifed out of composition notebooks. With our bonuses being cut significantly in May and no other bonuses in sight, I’m realizing just how much I’m barely surviving. And with performance-based pay… that makes it even harder. My last school did NOT care what we wore. I wore jeans and a t shirt probably 80% of the time. I wore pink crocs most days. My new school only allows jeans on Fridays and I’m pretty sad about it. I am an awkward size (short and very muscular) and professional pants rarely fit me. They’re either falling off and dragging on the floor or so tight they look like leggings. I am 25 weeks pregnant. My HR director has me scheduled for leave starting November 20th since my due date is the 30th. This year, I have 7 students. I’m a moderate to severe disabilities teacher so they are with me all day. I have one aide and she is amazing. Our case manager is not. She leaves early and gets there late every single day. The principal does nothing. They expect me to arrive before my contract time and leave 15 minutes after our ended contract time for nothing. So I have been leaving them with the SRO when the bus is late. Our case manager leaves 15 minutes early, so I’m not standing around past my time for free too. I have enough sick days that I can take off after fall break (Oct. 16th) and be out until I come back from maternity leave right before the end of the school year. Hey reddit. I just started my last school year. I made a post earlier in the summer that was very supportive and people asked me to document when I encounter the last time I have to do something. I am 100% retiring at the end of this school year and just found out Star Wars Starfighter is coming out on my last day of school forever, nice! 179 student contact days left, 20 sick/personal days (yes I am using them all). Third year teaching and we’re a week in with no schedule. We’ve been doing a rotation with the different grades (middle school) which isn’t the worst for me because I typically teach all of 7th grade, but my coworkers who teach advanced classes are losing their minds. I do a calculator contract with my students that needs signed by their parents, and seeing how I only got about half back after the third day, I sent the document out directly via email to the students and parents who didn’t complete it. I introduced myself, stated what we covered for the week and the idea behind the contract. I also included the phrase “I would appreciate if you found some time over the weekend to sign this…” Here’s a bit of one rude email I got back: “you're telling me what you would appreciate as if I ignored the request. I’m a teacher, and also a mom, so I’m in local mom groups. A student’s mom posted a very long, “anonymous” post about a very specific situation that happened with her child already this year. We are only in the first week. This child has already lied to her mother about me, including that I yelled at her and that someone pushed her in the face and I told her she was lying. I wasn’t even aware someone pushed her in the face. What sad is that this was a child whose behavior has been fantastic so far. An incident happened right before the weekend where if this was an older child, there would’ve been misconduct forms filled out regarding the child’s behavior. The title is a joke. I'm actually really impressed by my gifted kids, but a little nervous about how seriously many of them take their academics because, in all my years of teaching, I may have only ever had a handful of kids who cared; now I have entire classes of kids who care. Day 1: Almost every kid brought a pencil to class. I only had 3 kids who didn't bring a pencil to class. I'm used to having almost half the class need a pencil. Day 2: I tell the kids they can talk to their partner while making their name tags because it is a more art-based assignment. Almost none of them take the opportunity to talk. They're just focused. My state has a cell phone ban in school from start to end, which is great, but I don't think my students got the memo. Thus the birth of Phone Jail. I see a phone I take it! As a new department chair, I was required to go to a district orientation to do official evaluations for teachers in my department (on a Friday afternoon, no less...but that's a rant for later). The thing is, new APs are also at this training to observe their teachers, so I'm sitting next to a new math AP from one of the more well off schools in my district. At the end of the training, she's bemoaning the fact that 2 teachers in her department will be using their PPL this school year. Both are dads (not with each other, mind you). The first one is coming up and she starts talking about how their baby is SIX MONTHS OLD and it's ridiculous that he's taking it at all instead of the baby going to daycare. What tips do you have that increase your quality of life in the classroom? Here's mine as I go into my 5th year. Scooter wheels on your desk chair feels as nice as a new pair of shoes. Premium pens. I use the OHTO GS02. I have many of them each with their own color refills. A premium writing experience is also similar to the feeling of new shoes. 2b. A proper writing pad to pair with your premium pens. A standing desk with a barstool desk chair (with the scooter wheels obviously). Lord over the children. If we are at eye level things get too comfortable. You need to appear big and maintain high ground to keep them in check. Plants. We are humans on earth. Put life in your room. Refillable white board markers. A kid recently broke open an expo and showed me what was inside. Basically nothing. White board markers are a scam. Get the ones you can refill and fight big marker. How do you feel about instructional coaches? Gotta be the most condescending position ever. I find them useless. It wouldn't be a problem if they gave the job to much older seasoned teachers but the admin ass kissers who flee the classroom seem to get these positions. I’m so tired of psychological educational theory being misrepresented by people who make more money than me, and have little literacy in the content preached and presented that I must instill in my classroom. Students do not read. They do not do homework. They do not study. Any type of high expectations that are brought into the classroom are immediately chopped down to meet students where they are. I’m not saying meeting students where they are is bad. What’s infuriating is that there is a high expectation on teachers to compensate for students who chronically do not care. We constantly are between a rock and hard place with no time provided to meet the needs of these students, and the district will come down on us.
