I’ve been looking at what the publicly traded postsecondary companies said on their most recent earnings calls, and there seems to be a recurring theme around student acquisition and its evolution given the adoption of LLMs by prospective students. The management teams are saying that prospective students are going through longer and more iterative evaluation processes. Folks are having conversations with their LLMs, who are providing a wealth of information and are offering alternatives. LLMs are now serving as the intermediaries between prospective students and institutions. In the case of the publicly traded companies, this has caused web leads to go down and acquisition costs to go up. Given that the publicly traded institutions are for-profits, I have no sense if what they are seeing is reflective of their sector or if this is something that all higher ed institutions are seeing. I (18F) study in 12th grade I really want to be a good student. I crave academic validation. I want to get into a really good university. I have such big ambitions. Why don't i put in the effort? We’re trying to improve how we handle employee training, and I’m realizing that choosing an LMS is harder than I expected. I don’t care about having a huge list of features. I’m more interested in what makes an LMS easy for employees and manageable for the people running the training. For those who have used an LMS for employee training, what being most important? Actually, I'm someone who wants to learn. I already have a university degree. I just want to learn things online in my free time. I've always wondered about the quality of education a good university provides. Therefore, I'm curious if I can access all the courses a student takes in architecture, engineering, computer science, literature, or another field at a good university for free. I've looked at platforms like Edx, Udemy, and Coursera, but they either offer parts of the course or don't offer free access. I want to watch all the courses of any undergraduate program at a good university, in a classroom setting, for free, without providing a diploma. Is there such a thing? Im 27yo and suddently woke up to the fact that i completly messed up my education being consumed by anxiety, feeling not good enough, lack of discipline and simply being distracted and had a very narrow vision of whats possible out there. Im planning on going back to school this fall and i have 2 options : I can either take an online bachelor in computer science or computer science and management (3years). Or an industrial/civil engineering maybe even software if i later decide to switch (4-5). Im newly married, my husband can support me but the guilt and shame i would feel going to school at my age instead of already being established seems almost unbearable. Ive spent the last 5 years searching for what i can do and where can i find money and success while also thinking about having to take care of people around me (cook clean and make money). What is the smarter move? The engineering degree would take 1-2 years longer and is on campus (good for networking, internship but commute). V
CA is one of 5 states that fund by student seat time. I think in CA 4 hrs and 30 min counts as a full day of funding. But all I’ve seen is legislation repealing truancy consequences but I haven’t seen districts push the panic button on funding given the amount of chronic absenteeism. The bar for being chronically absent is >2 absences a month. We have kids at our school who are missing 40% of the year. I think our average is ~35%. Keep seeing his on client projects and it just kills me everytime, free preview video or a paid course model for like 209 bucks to the customer - unlisted YouTube embed, internal onboarding videos. With actual IP in them - ofc just airing in a public cloud bucket with signed URL that never expires. I mean I get it, embedding is free, it’s quick and nobody on the team want the that “actually we need DRM” guy in a meeting, but I’ve watched like 3 different founders find out that “hosted somewhere” doesn’t acc mean “protected “ - one had about 40K paid cohort’s vids ripped and re uploaded within a within a week of launch, another couldn’t get watch-time data past views cause their host didn’t track anything deeper, so they had no idea 80% of ppl dropped off in minute or two of every lesson. The thing I’m using is fee marketing clips embed anywhere, doesn’t matter - anything paid or gated, it needs actual DRM and expiring links, not just an unlisted setting, also anything you need retentio

I'm a senior who has had a deep love for history for years. I absolutely love school, work, and assignments. I have plans to major in history and have a passion for teaching and preserving our history. But my school treats me and it as a joke. I was told I was writing too many notes while studying. My teacher constantly leaves me behind while note taking because I insist on writing more than a few words in my notes. And I've just discovered I waisted four hours drawing and writing out a replica of the Boston Massacre only to see that the rubric says for the assignment says limit to one page for a very complex answer. I’m curious about something and would really appreciate answers from teachers here. When you need a worksheet, lesson idea, activity, presentation, assessment, etc., what do you actually do? I really want to study English Language and Creative Writing but I cannot justify the £5k a year on open university. If I don’t care about the label and saying hey I have a BA, how realistic is it for me to study using libraries, YouTube and books and learn the same things as if I went to uni for 3-6 years? I read a lot of AI text at work. Somewhere between the third "testament to" and the hundredth "delve", I stopped trusting long sentences altogether. So I made a small game called Long Story Short: one sentence a day, keep the five words that actually carry the story, cut the rest. It's a week old. 12,000 plays so far. A retired news editor emails me most mornings to argue about the answers, clause by clause, and he's mostly right. Yesterday two players argued opposite sides of the same word and convinced me my sentence itself was wrong. So I've been using peardeck for about three years and I really love it. I pay for it out-of-pocket and I absolutely think it is a game changer. For whatever reason my district blocked it. Maybe it's Google suites security or some hypervigilance maneuver on their part. But I've already spent my money on my subscription this year and when I ask them to unblock it, they don't really understand how useful it is. Unfortunately, I'm one of the few people who actually use it in my district because no one else is willing to pay for it and no one else has the skills to make it work and be effective in a classroom. But it's very disheartening because now I have to go through all of my slides shows which amount to about 150 slides shows and make them low-tech and less fun. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother. They used to pay for Nearpod, but they stopped paying for it and I really hate Nearpod. Starting to hate everyone in the technology side because they're working against us and not with us.

I have been thinking about education as a one-to-many system. A teacher has to work with many students at once, even though each person arrives with different prior knowledge and gets stuck at different points. But I do not think the answer is to turn education into one student alone with an AI. Learning is also social: discussing, collaborating, seeing how other people think and having a teacher who gives direction. What interests me is whether the individual experience around the same knowledge could become more personal. The source and objective could stay shared, while the explanation, interface, practice and feedback adapt as the person learns. I am building an open-source project around this idea, but I am still trying to understand the boundary. Hi, I just started my junior year of high school, and quite frankly I am disgusted by my state’s education system. It’s abysmal, requiring massive policy upheavals. Nobody is given the opportunity to live up to their full potential. So, if possible, I’d like to do something to change it. The problem is, I’m a bit stumped because I feel absolutely powerless. For more direct context, I live in New Mexico. It is one of (if not the ) lowest ranked states education-wise in the country, and from what I’ve seen is only getting worse. I know that this is also largely due to poverty, but one can’t help but feel like schools are designed to nip attempts of escaping impoverishment in the bud. I, myself, work with a tutoring group to help serve elementary school students who are behind, but my impact is small and it’s hard to make progress when (and I can’t emphasize this enough) they’re missing YEARS of content. I’m very worried for what the future might hold if things continue to trend downwards
If a student asks for the answer to a homework question, should the AI give it? No one can guarantee understanding, but the task gets complete. Imagine signing up for what you think is a $16 a month learning trial only to wake up to a sudden $218 charge on your card. That exact nightmare happened to me with Brilliant.org. The free trial signup page made it look free 30 days experience, after the first month a regular monthly plan. But when my free trial ended my card got slapped with an $218 annual fee. Panicked I logged in immediately to cancel. But their website trapped me in an endless glitch loop. The cancellation page literally would not work. I messaged support within 24 hours explaining their own site broke. They did not care. They hid behind robotic script templates claiming payments are non refundable and only offered a partial refund. I'm interviewing for a role right now as an enrollment advisor. It's a high volume of sales calls, all warm leads though no cold calling, with approximately 100 calls a day. Does anyone do this currently? How is it? I imagine over time it becomes easier and more mindless since you're basically pitching the same things over and over again. Looking for some honest takes on where video learning is heading. I’m working on an engine where the core idea is simulative video learning . Basically, you input what you're trying to learn, and it generates a video simulation tailored to that concept- allowing you to visually see how variables change, how systems interact, or how complex ideas play out in real time. I used to use Jam Board, and it was pretty good for groups of students to make a public question board that didn’t clutter my classroom and drop post-it confetti everywhere. I’ve looked into Figma ( way too complex for what I need) and the post-it app (can multiple people even collaborate on it?) and Miro (looking for a free option). Does anyone know of a simple, sticky note style option that will allow students to post questions to a communal board for free? My district just dropped a ridiculous amount of funding on a new high school financial literacy suite. I finally got my admin login today to check it out before deployment It is literally just locked pdfs and multiple choice quizzes from like 2012. No interactive elements, just "click next to continue" compliance garbage. Students don't learn real world skills by staring at a wall of text about index funds. I showed some kids a basic trading game on the smartboard last week just to demonstrate market volatility and they were instantly hooked, asking actual smart questions about risk and supply/demand Why is it that simple apps can build better experiential learning than enterprise edtech companies charging $20k a year? Why does it feel like, similar to video game companies ,the future of edtech is not in huge companies but small boutique firms with extremely specialized capabilities? I feel like we are going to see a balkanization of edtech firms which will coalesce into a sort of union of firms. Eventually we will have companies again. I think the best thing that edtech firms can do is teach teachers how to make products using ai for their classrooms. I'm not actually a CS student. I switch from CS to EE because of the AI hype a couple of years ago. Jensen Huang scared me away from that major. The layoffs and reddit posts talking about having to do 5000 apps didn't help either. I enjoy my engineering classes and learning more about technology but I find myself gravitating towards web development projects rather than microcontroller projects. And most of my projects revolve around educational tools. I'm a part time student and full time pharmacy technician and most of my projects revolve around teaching different aspects of my job. So I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to specialize in this field? Is it safe from AI? Does it pay well? Edit: thanks for the responses. Parental consent logs, proving deletion for regulators, it all seems like an absolute nightmare to build internally.
