I'm told by my students, I'm an oldhead so this goes back to the mid 80's. I was a sophomore taking chemistry. In my English class we were reading The Odyssey and we had an assignment to create/re-enact a scene sort of diorama style. The teacher suggested using action figures for the characters, so all week, action figures - Batman, He-Man, GI Joe, etc - were making appearances in every class. One kid, in my chem class, had his Batman action figure out and he was futzing around with it. Our chem teacher was a no-nonsense sort of guy with an impressive brown walrus-like mustache. After a single request to put batman away, that wasn't acted on fast enough, he walked over, grabbed it, and threw it across the room toward the trash can. Batman almost made it, almost. He hit the brim of the metal can, and broke into 6 pieces. My dumb 15 year old self thought this was the funniest thing I'd ever seen and couldn't help but laugh. So I have brought back my "teacher's corner" to my new office. It has a soft, plush chair for teachers to sit on. It also has a mini-fridge stocked with drinks and a basket stuffed full of treats. Finally, I also have a small television set set up in there with a Fire stick and a collection of DVDs. The idea is that if a teacher comes to me for help, advices, or just to vent, that there is a nice place for them to make them feel welcomed and comfortable. I’m a 3rd year teacher, and teaching has made me grow as a person. Before teaching, I hated being judged or disliked by others to the point that it would make physically sick, I was a huge people pleaser, and I was easily angered or frustrated by minor inconveniences. I also had terrible time management and would show up late to everything. During my first year teaching, I would wake up and have anxiety attacks bc I was so nervous to teach. I started going to therapy regularly after that. Going to therapy and sticking to teaching has helped me expose myself to uncertainty and stress and I’ve gradually gotten so much better at handling it in my personal life, not just my work life. And my time management has gotten better too! I’m actually showing up early to places now! It was so rough at the beginning, but I’m glad that I’ve stayed because I don’t know if I would have grown as quickly as I have. Wife is a pre-k teacher entering year 32. She has not enjoyed the job in some time but financially it made sense to keep working. She told me this week she just can’t do it. Her new class has 2 4 year olds that are not potty trained and she was told last year it was her job to clean them up. (This is a non ESE classroom) On top of that she has a nightmare child who will need a lot of work to settle down. This precious angel has already, in 3 days, slapped my wife twice and kicked her. Instead of getting support from home they had just enough education to send in a AI generated behavior plan they insist be implemented to help the child “transition” to the classroom. This was the last straw. She meets with the retirement office Monday and plans to be gone by Labor Day. I flaired this as humor, but it actually happened during my second period this morning. MS Chemistry / Physical Science teacher, for what it's worth. Today is our 8th day of class for our students. My second period is Physical Science and is comprised primarily of Sophomores, but I have a couple of Juniors and Seniors. After a week of mostly basic intro/review work I sprung a pop quiz on all of my classes. Short and sweet. 10 questions. The first 7 questions were multiple choice, followed by 2 short answer questions, 1 discussion question (basically asking their opinion on something - guaranteed correct as long as it was answered). At the end of the quiz I gave them some room for questions, comments or suggestions. Nobody offered any. I expect to have some of each Monday at inopportune times. This year I’m moving into a new classroom teaching first grade. There is a restroom attached to the classroom that connects to another classroom on the other side. Last year, the classrooms were kindergarten in my room and behavioral special needs jn the other room. Anyway, children haven’t even been in the building all summer. The restroom REEKS of urine. The custodian says he tried everything to get the smell out but he thinks urine has seeped into the grout of the tile. Any advice on what to do about the smell? Hey folks, I know the question gets asked on here from time to time, but it is one of my interests in any career field. My first career was as an Army mechanic, and I spent most of the first half of my adult life in oily ACU’s. One of the reasons I am glad to be a teacher now is that I get to dress up a little bit for work. Something like this or this is how I’m typically dressed in the classroom. Coworkers have occasionally told me I’m overdoing it a little, but I’ve found high schoolers respond pretty well to it, and I spend all day trying to convince teenagers that school is important, so I think there is something to be said for dressing like I’m doing something important. That said, most people are pretty surprised when I tell them I am ideologically opposed to most dress codes. It was the 3rd day of school. I physically could not make it in this morning due to a severe panic attack. This position was nothing like I expected it to be. I sent in my resignation before students arrived. I feel horrible, but I could not do it. I have lost weight, sleep and my anxiety medication is not helping. Feeling like a failure. It seems painfully obvious to me that education has been shifted toward maintaining false and graduation rates and giving parents what they want. There a few ways how administration and state governments have done this. The first are credit recovery courses. These 'classes' are literally scams. They are online modules created to shove student through high school who clearly can't make it. I've seen how they work and done one myself. The entire premise is to pass the student. Some are just clicking buttons as fast as you can and really nothing else. The second are pressuring teachers to change grades. While this one is technically against the rules, my suspicion is that it is rampant, at least in some schools. It's hard to prove and difficult to stamp out. The third is related to the second. I was finally able to land a full time middle school ELA position at a great school, with dream-level supportive admin/coworkers. We are a couple days into the new school year and I am coming into a lot of friction with student behavior. Nothing as bad previous sites and districts that I’ve worked at thankfully…but I’ve noticed that students just straight up don‘t take me seriously. As if I was wall decoration. I was a School Resource Officer (SRO) at a large high school for about 2 years starting in 2000. During my time there, I saw firsthand how forcing older teenagers to be in school when they absolutely did not want to be was incredibly disruptive. It felt like a lot of time and energy was spent forcing kids into a building who then spent the whole day disrupting teachers, ruining the environment for other students who wanted to learn, and even committing crimes. From my law enforcement perspective, it often felt counterproductive. But I want to hear from teachers. I'm in my 8th year of teaching, 10th year in education, and today is the first time I got the news that a student I actually knew well has died. It was the first day of classes. Everything else went well, but I feel so down. There have been student deaths at our school before, but none that hit close to home for me. I taught him in an English learner support block, three times a week, and got to know him and his friend group well. They ended up eating lunch in my room a lot. In the last weeks of school they brought an Xbox (or something like that) and I let them hook it up to my projector at lunch to play Super Smash Bros, and I remember him insisting I should join for a round at some point. So as a Canadian outside looking in I am curious if these days US teachers teach any sort of world religion/comparative religion and if they do , are students more accepting/understanding of different faiths or does it go other their heads? For me when I was taught comparative religion (back when Nintendo Wiis were the hot new trend). We spent about 1/3 of Grade 8 social studies examining 6 major world religions. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. (If your curious why Judaism and Sikhism were chosen even though Taoism, Taoism , Yoruba religion and West African Vodún have more followers we did the former for its starting point for Christianity and Islam and Canada has the second largest Sikh/Punjabi population in the world and my area had a heavy Sikh population so doing so would have alienated a large portion of the student body.) We have two non-instructional days before school starts. Most of today was meetings, but we had 1.5 h to work in our classroom. Tomorrow we have an hour and a half professional development session on a topic I regularly used to present on. Another staff member actually designed the program that the whole thing is based around. Our admin knows this. Did they ask us to present? Nope, they brought in an "expert". So school has started and I just finished my second day teaching. It was stressful and overwhelming. The students knew I was new and started playing in my face. I had an experienced teacher with me just to make sure things don’t go out of control and stepped in when needed. I felt like I didn’t get anything done since yesterday. The students also won’t listen to any directions I’m giving even if I’m insistent and speak very concisely with no begging words like please. I know it’s not the students problem but my problem because of my poor classroom management. I feel like giving up if things don’t improve. I’m also struggling with learning 150 kids’ names. Well guys… I’m a first year teacher and yesterday was my first day of teaching kindergarten. It was terrible🫠 Half way through the day I was crying and really struggled to bring myself back together. Luckily I work with great people and had help to make it through the day. I had one student who clearly doesn’t have structure at home and possibly has adhd. As a first year teacher who didn’t have much experience with that in their internship, I just don’t know how I’m supposed to manage him and 15 other kids. Not gonna lie, just want to rant and hear if anyone went through a similar situation. Back in June I was offered two positions, one near my home teaching 6th, and one teaching K in a city far away(30 min commute each way). I accepted the K job because of the school I would be at. I liked the community and the staff there alot. These were all huge factors in my decision for which job I accepted. Fast forward to this week. I spent the last 8 days setting up my classroom, just to be called in by HR and told that im going to be moved to a different school. I was extremely upset, because they could have told me way sooner. I’m also upset because I went from a large classroom, to a portable that is 1/3 the size. Even better, the person who was in the classroom before is still in the process of moving out, so I can’t even move in yet. This is honestly such bullshit and im so upset. I am no longer a teacher, after teaching special ed for 20 years. I am now in a "teaching adjacent" field. We are absolutely FORBIDDEN to buy anything for our clients, even a cup of coffee. We can't even buy them something that they need for their home like dishwashing soap. Which has me thinking....how in society did it become appropriate for teachers to buy stuff for their classroom and their students? When I was a teacher I spent so much money on supplies for the classroom as a whole, and I even bought individual students things they needed like deodorant, headphones, wipes, maxi pads, etc. Of course, I always reached out to the parent first, but with some of them it was crickets...... Some schools across the country are now turning to a hi-tech device to combat active shooters. At least nine schools across the U.S. are being equipped with drones designed to distract a school shooter until police arrive. The drones work by flashing strobe lights, sounding sirens, and spraying pepper gel at the threat. The aircraft is called Campus Guardian Angel, and it can ram into a threat at 50 miles per hour. Hi all. I'm a teacher in a non-American country where the use of the n-word has started to gain popularity. This is especially noticeable amongst my black students and as a white teacher I'm unsure how to address it with them, or if I even should. I feel that it's not appropriate for school settings, but I'm also aware that I am missing distinct nuance with it as I am neither black nor American. As such, I would like to know how black American teachers address the use of the n-word by their students so that I can handle instances where it is used sensitively and appropriately. I teach social studies to high school kids. I have multiple cultural, state and country flags hanging on my walls including multiple versions and sizes of the Rainbow flag. Yesterday was the first day of school and I boogied out of the classroom pretty quickly. Seeking a little advice here - my school’s spirit shirt this year was designed using AI. I am expected to wear it for a back to school event this evening but the thought of putting it on makes my skin crawl. Maybe an unusual question, but just curious. My child is in elementary and I was googling the teacher he was just assigned for this year. I noticed that the public school salary listings were online. One thing that struck me as odd was that this teacher, despite being at the school for several years at minimum (maybe longer…) is paid almost $50K less than the other teachers for the same grade and the other teachers my child has had in the past, some of whom were new to the school/district at the time. I’m not sure if that really means anything in terms of teaching quality/assigned raises or what other factors could contribute to what looks like a huge inequity from an outside perspective. For example, would teaching one month of summer school really make that much of a difference (taking like 100K to 150K - seems doubtful…)? Is that normal? Do they pay less if someone is a “spousal hire” and their partner is also working for the same district at a higher salary similar to other teacher

I’m a first year teacher and have decided to resign early in the school year. After two weeks of school, I already feel completely drained. I’ve been putting all my energy into classroom management, planning, trying new strategies, contacting parents, and seeking advice, but I keep coming back to the same feeling: this isn’t sustainable for me. A big part of this is my family. My job is taking so much of my mental and emotional energy that I don’t have much left for them. On top of that, I’m also part of the shared responsibility of caring for our elders in the family, and when work is this demanding it becomes harder to show up for that in the way I want to. A year ago my principal decided to “shake things up” by moving a bunch of teachers around because that is what she learned at a professional development workshop. She removed me from a class I loved and put me in a class I never wanted. The year was a failure, to the point that almost half the staff left at the end of the year. From teachers to support staff, it was a nightmare. I was one of the many that left after being denied a duty change. I spent over 20 years there holding many hats, but I finally needed to leave after seeing how we failed our students and families this year and knowing it was not going to get better. I sat down tonight to give it a rewatch and wow, I can't believe how much it resonates with me now as a teacher. It's surreal seeing experiences and family dynamics that many of my students have being portrayed in such a realistic light. Some context: high school teacher, California Rant incoming. Sorry. Before the start of last year, I got an email from a counselor indicating I would have a student in the fall with a potential 504 Plan and inquiring whether I would anticipate any problems. The only issue, the 504 Plan was essentially the student had difficulties concentrating for long stretches and needed frequent breaks and reminders to get back on track. Sounded easy enough. But I should have been more skeptical that the details were not fully flushed out and I trusted the counselor to articulate all of the relevant details upfront. My mistake. I am in my 9th year of teaching kindergarten. This year is the first year I have a student who speaks absolutely no english. His family also speaks no english and I don’t have translation services at my school. The language barrier is obviously a big deal but this child is also a HUGE behavior problem. I spend the bulk of my days redirecting him to the point I can barely get through my lessons. I feel like I am sacrificing the 16 for the 1. I’m truly at a loss. I speak to him in spanish to redirect him and then say the same redirection in english. He does not ever listen to the redirection. When I was an administrator in the past, I always did a yearly walk through with the police's SWAT team so they'd know the layout of the campus incase of an emergency. I'm bringing back the tradition on a day when no staff or students will be present. Luckily, the SWAT team said they are free this Friday. This happened to me last school year and with the new year starting, I’ve been thinking about it again and wondering how other teachers would have handled it. I had a middle school student who did very little work in my class. Throughout the quarter I contacted his mom MULTIPLE times about his missing assignments and lack of participation. Nothing really changed. Toward the end of the final quarter, I also started writing him up because he would sit in class playing games on his school device instead of doing his work. Eventually, he received ISS. During the last month of school my principal called me into their office. I wasn’t in trouble, but she asked me about giving this student all of the formative assignments he had missed throughout the quarter so he could potentially improve his grade. I pushed back. I explained that I had contacted his mom multiple times throughout the quarter about exactly this issue. He had repeatedly chosen not to do the work. My principal basically said, “

This won't be eloquent, sorry. I'm a first year teacher, fresh out of college and into kindergarten. I've always had a strong conviction for how I wanted my classroom to look. I modeled my ideal classroom after teachers that I admired. Well, anyway, today was day one, and... Wtf?! I don't feel totally defeated...I mean... I'm not crying or anything. Buuuut the kids definitely don't listen to me. Like they were up out of their seats and walking to stem bins/toys/etc. of course I redirected them to their seats, but I had to walk over and physically guide them. It feels like my words don't hold any weight to them lollol. I had to repeat myself SO many times. I always hear that the first days of school are critical. Sink or swim. Life or death. Set expectations, follow through, and prep yourself for success. Well I thought I would do that😭 But man it was easier in my head. I'm just afraid of messing this up. In my 13+ years of teaching middle school I’ve never slept through an alarm or forgot to set one. Well friends, there’s a first time for everything 😂. I am notoriously a light sleeper but this morning after 2 days of PD and classroom set-up, my 36 year old body said you need rest. I woke up and would have been extremely late. Rather than stress myself to rush out the door, forget a million things, and play catch up the rest of the day, I called for a sub and emailed the powers that be. I had emergency lesson plans already copied so the kids had things to work on. Cheers to the first day of the new school to everyone!
