I got my classroom perfectly set up, and I was so excited for tomorrow. Today is student prep day, and I was going to get to meet my incoming 6th grade students. Yesterday I went dumpster diving. The reason I went dumpster diving is because I got a call from a fellow teacher saying that all of our classroom (mine and my 2 teammates) things were thrown into the dumpster. At the beginning of June, our school was hit by a tornado. The roof was blown off on our side of the building as well as over the gym. We received one email from the assistant principal saying to not come into the building that particular week of the tornado because there was damage. We have not heard from anyone else about anything that happened to our rooms. Periodically throughout the summer I’ve been getting pictures and messages from other teachers of my room. I put everything away in cabinets before school ended, except for my books and bookshelves, some of my carts, chairs, and big beanbag chairs. So, this happened around February. I was appalled at the time, but had other things to do. It just went back into my mind and, giving it a bit of thought, I realised how utterly surreal the thing is. So basically, there's this Spanish teacher (I am from Spain, so it would be like an English teacher doing this in the US) admitted, in front of the whole teacher body, that he allows his students to "refine" their writings with ChatGPT. He basically allows them to have it open in class, and "ask it questions on style, grammar and structure". Later on, this same teacher admitted, in another meeting, that he uses a paid ChatGPT account to grade these essays. I am on my summer leave. I am a history teacher, and I was just going over how I am going to avoid students from cheating with AI, and I just connected the dots. This guy isn't running a class. I am in my new hire orientation today and it's genuinely the most overstimulating environment I've ever been in. Just going in the door there was a drum line, adult cheerleaders, and music blasting from loudspeakers in several locations---including the main hallway where we have to sign in and the gym we had to sit in to wait for 20 minutes. No one needs The Black Eyed Peas that loud at 8am. Loudspeakers are a 10 on a scale of 10. Why are events so overstimulating at teacher events? I seriously need to vent because I am so overwhelmed. I’m a first-year 1st grade teacher, and today was only my second day of school. Before school started, our team was given a pacing guide that said we had the first two weeks to focus on teaching classroom routines and procedures while also completing beginning-of-year assessments. The assessments are important because our curriculum has differentiated centers, and we’re supposed to group students based on their assessment results. I’ve noticed something over the years, and I’m curious if it’s just my experience or if it’s common everywhere. Why does it seem like every school has that one person who’s considered the “snake” on campus? The person who acts friendly to your face but is constantly running to administration about coworkers, spreading gossip, or finding ways to make someone else’s day harder. They seem to know everyone’s business, talk negatively about almost everyone, and somehow always stay in the administration’s good graces. What I’ve never understood is why this seems to be so common in education. Teachers already deal with enough stress from students, parents, testing, and paperwork. In Texas, I received my statement of eligibility 3 months ago. Finally got a position in the last moment, but I can see myself crunching a lot because the training already started. At first, I was panicking because they switched me from Algebra 1 to Calculus, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. It's unexpected, but then I realize that I haven't talked to my mentors or anything. The worst part is it ain’t the students. It’s Tuesday night of the first week of school. I had my pre-planning week last week where I had to move classrooms, attend meetings (which I skipped and missed nothing) and plan for the semester. I’m teaching a topic I am not specialized in while the teacher who is specialized in it gets my specialty. I’ve got three mandatory meetings this week during my planning period and no time left to prep. The singular saving grace is I finally have a room where I control the thermostat. I know it’s not that serious but I went from having my plan after lunch, to having it last period (215-3). My (HUGE) district is hosting a convocation. Basically a massive pep rally. My school got invited and only a select few teachers can go due to capacity limitations. Unfortunately I’m going. Apparently about 5,000 people will be at this event. I have been anxious about this all week. I don’t even go to concerts or malls. These feelings are partially from not being able to tolerate the noise of large crowds but also thinking about how unsafe l feel, my inability to escape if needed, etc. These large ass crowds make me think “perfect opportunity for a mass sh**ting”. How can I ever enjoy myself with these thoughts? It’s pretty much frowned upon to request off on professional development days, which this is, so that’s not an option. I work as a teacher since 2025. I teach languages. Joined this school in July, had my gut feeling that this is weird right from the start. Too many roles for one teacher from random duties to bus duties and so on. The principal on the other hand walked around pretending to be a swagger, while in reality intimidated the teachers. My first thought is: There are a lot of people with university degrees making less than 35k a year here. During the summer, I was so invested, loving, and had so much energy to talk to my family, friends, and significant other, but literally it has all been zapped in a matter of two days. The school year hasn't even started yet, and I hate my student desks. I was fully expecting normal square desks that I could line up in rows in classic cathedral seating, which I've been told over and over is the best and easiest way for a first year teacher to deal with classroom management. Ran my tiny weekend essay workshop today. I swear a couple adult drafts in a row had the exact same chatbot-polished sentence: “my journey taught me resilience.” Different backgrounds, distinct pieces, matching boring robot frosting. It helped me see this is the problem I’m fighting with my students too. They assume revision equals “make it sound brainier” instead of “pin down the actual point.” So we get paragraphs that are grammatically clean and totally empty. I finally turned in the very last term for the credential part of my masters I’m for my program. Am I the only one? I enjoy teaching and lesson planning. I love connecting with my students and finding ways to make learning meaningful for them. Setting up and designing a physical space? I’m dying! I feel all this pressure to have a Pinterest worthy room when I just am not that kind of person. During our morning meeting admin invited a pastor who was from the church that had donated our breakfast to come up and speak. He spoke for about 15 minutes and it basically turned into a full sermon with quoting of Bible verses, reasons why we should attend his church, and what the Bible says about teaching and the servant lifestyle. So I recently accepted an administrative position at the local high school as the new dean of students. This isn’t my first time as an admin as I was a vice principal for several years. And when I was an administrator, if a colleague got a new position, I always wished them well at their new posting. So Friday, I let my current admin team know about my new post. My principal was very happy for me and said I will do well at my new post. She had heard that I got the job and bought me a small plant for my new offices. My asst. principal was the exact opposite. She loudly said that it was wrong of me to take a position somewhere else so late into the summer and that I should help them to fill my 3rd grade teaching position. I told her that if I wasn’t starting my new job today that I would help out if the PRINCIPAL asked me to. The principal smiled and said she could handle it and to enjoy my new job. She also said she’d save me a seat next to her at admin meetings in the future if I like.

Principal who plans on being a principal until retirement = they're more reasonable in their expectations, tuned in to what the school needs, and once they have a few years of experience they aren't afraid to modify/ignore district directives that don't make sense for the school. I find it eternally frustrating that we can acknowledge everything but parents as problems in education. Funding, lack of time, lack of resources, political environment, or other things are accepted as valid reasons why a school is not succeeding, but never parents. There are parents who are absolutely failing their kids. They don't do the basics of teaching their kids not to attack others. The don't seem to care when their child severely disrupts a classroom. They will defend their child even in the face of video evidence. Teachers and schools will never acknowledge that parents are terrible and that is the cause of the students failure. I know that means angry parents, but being honest about their child's likely outcome is vastly more helpful than ignoring the problems and just trying to shove the kid through. I honestly don't know if I just need a reality check or if something else is going on. I recently completed my master's in education and am certified to teach English Language Arts for grades 7–12 in New York. I've also submitted my CEAS application to transfer my certification to New Jersey. My only classroom experience is student teaching, so I know I'm competing against people with years of experience, but I was constantly told throughout college and grad school that there was a huge teacher shortage and that I'd have no problem finding a job. Fast forward two months, and I've applied to just about every English/ELA opening I can find in both New York and New Jersey. Public schools, leave replacements, long-term substitute positions, you name it. I've tailored cover letters, updated my resume, and applied almost daily. The frustrating part is that I'm not even getting rejected. It's just... nothing. No interviews, no emails, no calls. Complete silence. Is this normal for first-year
