This year when they have that annual 403b meeting, don't sign up with the company that gives the presentation (equitable, security benefit, etc). Go to your HR department and ask them which companies you can open one up with. If vanguard is an option, go with that one. I didn't realize that was an option until it was too late. I finally was able to move my money to vanguard this summer but the process was beyond difficult. They purposely make you jump through hoops so they can keep your money. They may as well ask you to give up your first born because the process is so ridiculous. This is a venting session. Starting teaching is needlessly complicated and expensive. I'm going in on alternative certification route, so not even doing a full MAT program. This may vary based on the US state you are in, but so far before I've even gone to orientation , here are my costs and procedures to start as a teacher in Pennsylvania: COSTS All general praxis tests for K-8 and two subject based tests which must be completed before starting (Math and Science)- $400 FBI background check, health check, state criminal check, 2 different child abuse forms- -$200 , slightly higher as out of state Cancelled work days to attend last minute interview requests-- roughly $500 in lost work This is not covering the education costs for certification which will be out of pocket---around $10-12k because of Pennsylvania restricting access to only some certification programs. I got a job offer yesterday, I accepted and this morning they rescinded it because they spoke to "someone" from my former district who told them I was put on a "behavioral and professional improvement plan". It was my first year and all probationary teachers are put on an IDP. There was nothing behavioral about it. I was an exemplary employee. My EOY report was great! High scores, 100% student growth. It was NOT my principal. He told me to give them his number and have them call him to speak on my behalf. I am gutted. I worked very hard, I did what I was told, I gave from my time and money for my students. Parents were happy, the district hired me for summer school too. The only reason I resigned was I didn't want to do SpEd anymore (I have a dual degree and wanted to do GenEd) but there were no positions available in my school. I did provide all the paperwork to prove what I am saying. I didn't misrepresent myself in any way or claimed I was a perfect teacher in any way shape or form.
In his latest livestream, John Miller (host of Youtube Channel Teacher Talk with John), confronts the question of why school administrators in 2026 are hesitant to enforce discipline or to give out consequences for misbehaving students. I will post the link here , but to summarize, he cites the following 6 reasons: Funding is often tied to number of expulsions Legal liability, IDEA legislation, threat of lawsuits, some states like California even making recess detention illegal Overpopulated alternative placement schools due to lack of funding. My school district has told us that if we are going to make and share an Amazon wish list that it has to be approved by them and then all items from it will become district property. My state requires 24 professional development hours annually. My district (large/urban) encourages its schools to just host back to school orientations for incoming middle school students and high school students (no clue what goes on in elementary). To entice participation, admin dangles PD hours to get teachers to show up for the day. This is really just a way to get free labor out of us in the name of professional development. I teach at a middle school, with teaming at each grade. A few times a year we have “spirit week “ with themed days. My team of teachers ( all females) will wear matching outfits on random days yet leave me out. I’ll walk into a meeting and be the only one not wearing, for example, a black top and beige pants. I don’t comment on their appearances and participate as needed. One member of my team hadn’t been a part of this “matching” day until near the end of the year. My first 4 years as a teacher were a hot mess. In Year 5, I switched from private schools to public school, and my life and work became so much easier; I finally felt like I was beginning to improve each year. I'm going into my 9th year of teaching, but because I had the lowest seniority in my department, I was displaced from my old school. At that school, I grew a lot and became a much better teacher. I had one instructional coach say that she looked forward to coming to my class because the kids were learning and there weren't any major behavioral issues. (Always gonna be 1 or 2 kids off task.) Tagged as humor just because of how quick I got the emails and there’s no other way to feel about it. I’ve been looking for a new job since I resigned from my previous school last month and I applied to a district about an hour south of me in Washington (district is north of Vancouver). The jobs were for a kinder, 3rd, and 4th grade teachers at two elementary schools and I spent the last two years teaching 3rd and 4th grade. The jobs were posted 4 days ago so I figured I’d find out in a week or so whether I’d hear back from them. Well 7 hours later I check my email and find that they emailed me to let me know they were moving on with other candidates and closing my applications for those two spots. It’s demoralizing to apply nonstop to schools all within an hour of where I live and only see the emails stating that they’re going with other candidates without getting an interview. I am an 8th Grade Teacher is a small-ish town. My husband and I took our kids to a small mall in a neighboring town. The mall is pretty run down and has a reputation for being a dumping ground/babysitter for groups of unsupervised pre-teens, but it was early afternoon and we were back to school shopping. As we were driving into the parking lot, a group of five boys burst out a side door. They came close to the curb right as we were driving past, then one kid made eye contact with my husband and pretended to jump in front of his truck. My husband slammed on the brakes. A few of the kids flipped us off, and another tossed a drink on the side door. Then they bolted. My husband, pissed, did a U-Turn right there and drove after them. I’m 16 going on 17 and as I enter into my junior year of high school, I’m really starting to look into my future after high school. Apparently, there's an AI where the teacher wears a mic and goes about their day, and then it grades us based on the rubric. I'm just curious how other teachers feel about the growing trend of teacher influencers who are showing the faces of their students in their content. There are so many teachers on social media that do a great job at sharing what it's like in the classroom. I follow many of them on TikTok because their content is either funny or informational. The majority of them are very respectful when it comes to student privacy but I'm now seeing this trend of others who are treading into uncharted territory. Where do we draw the line of what's appropriate? So I recently got a new classroom and the white board is one of those like marker board panels that are at lowe’s and it is not magnetic. I really prefer to use my board for notices, important information, supplies. Because it is just a board it is not magnetic and that really hinders part of my plan. In addition the coating does not really work anymore. This board cannot be cleaned I used a few different white board solutions I usually use and it looked like I did nothing at all. At this point, i’m trying to think outside the box because my school is poor and will not replace it but I need to be able to use that space. I considered creating either a felt board or a magnet board type of covering to get some use. I make useful notes slides but I want to get away from the fill in the blank way of taking notes. However my students seem to have a hard time figuring out whats important. So when I’ve tried to ditch my very detailed catchers they’re always asking “so what do I write?”. Hi all, I’m in the western suburbs of Chicago and can’t find a middle or high school social studies job. I want to teach, and have my masters, but can’t find anything. I’m thinking at this point in the summer, I may need to look at something else. I’m just so mad as I want to teach and have loved teaching these past six years, but after leaving the private school sphere in hopes to go back to teaching public, I just can’t find anything. Alpha School Website Someone I worked with like 14 years ago posted this on Facebook claiming "they use AI tools for two hours then the remaining time is spent interactively learning. They learn about credit cards, stock markets, YouTube etc." and that they're "crushing test scores." I looked through the website and watched their video, and man, this is bleak and probably only the beginning of this type of crap. It's impossible to tell how much of the video is real, but it looks like they spend most of their time getting addicted to tablets and becoming YouTubers. I'm also like 80-90% sure that there's some kind of nefarious motive behind this place, either a private equity firm trying to yet agin monetize education and/or this place is funded by OpenAI or something. There's too many funny things here to quote. "At Alpha School, teachers shift from traditional roles like grading and writing lesson plans, to supporting students’ emotional and motivational needs and teaching life skills.
This is not always this case but it usually is when students are scoring 3+ grade levels behind. Where is the line between scaffolding and giving students way too much support just to be able to say they completed an assignment? If you teach 6th grade and have kids at a 2nd grade reading level, there's no real way to scaffold and then release the scaffolds because the student is simply too far behind and would need some really intense reading intervention for years to catch up. You can give them all the support all year long (reading aloud, outlining with them, asking guiding questions, showing them where to refer to in the text, sentence starters, etc.) but if they can't do it independently then they can't really do it. It is what it is. Simply put - could you pull a random 2nd grader and put them in your 6th grade class and then "scaffold at first then remove scaffolds" in order for them to access 6th grade curriculum? I was looking at my class for next year and I have a LOT of behavior problems compared to last year, lot of lows, but it’s kinda similar to my class last year (ALMOST all of my kids last year were at a 3rd grade level, but got them on level by the end of the year!! I ended my almost 2-year engagement last night. My fiancé was seeing someone else. I run the afterschool programs at a roughly 300-student school and used to teach in a classroom, so I know almost half of the families fairly well. Kahoot made some updates that apparently allowed students to access Youtube, which of course the students figured out quickly and immediately abused, and BAM. I think maybe I’m being a little sensitive about this, but wanted to get a second opinion. I’m going into my 5th year teaching. I’m 26 and teach middle school, I’m also 5’0 and get mistaken for a student frequently. Today was my first day back for PD, and I had two coworkers make comments about my weight. I had a pretty significant weight loss a couple years ago. The first incident of the day was an academic coach telling me I’ve gotten even skinnier (I have not) and asking what I’m doing to get so slim. The second was a coworkers saying there’s no way I weigh more than 100lbs (I do in fact weight more because I do strength training). I had this issue last year too. A coach in my building made a comment in front of students about how “tiny” I was. The year before that, a sub told me to “be anorexic a couple of days” after watching me eat a cinnamon rolls- she said this in front of the kids. At the end of this last school year, my admin asked me to come into their office. They usually do every year to ask me what I wanted to teach (special education co-teacher). I’ve co-taught math for the last 7 out of 8 years of my teaching career. They told me I would have to teach a different subject for some class periods this school year, which I’m ok with. I teach a core subject in 8th grade that is state tested. This year I am trying to go super low tech, breaking out the textbooks and getting the kids off screen as much as I can. However, that comes with the challenge of how to collect data adequately as a way of both appeasing my admin and gauging student understanding. The past few years I’ve been very high tech because that’s how I was taught. How was data best collected before everything became so tech heavy? If you’re a low/no tech teacher how do you collect data? How do I manually collect data for 25+ kids in a class period effectively? I know the only way my admin is going to go for me getting the kids off the computer is if I have data available to show progress so this isn’t something I can just decide not to do. I am a second year teacher. I am starting my second year at the same school, and I teach a state tested class (Algebra 1). I am feeling so defeated and overwhelmed after my first day back at pre planning. Last year, I felt like I had the best year! My test scores on unit assessments were GREAT, my classes were cohesive, and my relationships with my coworkers were amazing. I even won “rookie of the year” and got on a stage to get handed a big, cheesy check! And then my state test scores came. My students did not perform how their unit assessments said they should have. So many of them still passed! Albeit, in the “proficient” category (not what the district looks at). Knowing where my students started, and how proud they were of themselves was the best. But no one else seemed happy. I felt like the admin teams started avoiding me and looking at me different. My coworkers told me I did all I could, and I couldn’t have done anything differently, and so many other factors go into testing.
It took me several years but I finally translated the word "relationship" in my head into something that made sense for me. I just flipped it into the word "trust." Students don't have to like me, or bond with me, or have shared interests or whatever. But for learning to happen they do need to trust me. They need to trust that whatever nonsense I'm delivering in the curriculum now will be important or useful later. Why on Earth would they listen to me going over long division for weeks unless they trust that it will be worth it in the future... They need to trust that I will be fair (not necessarily equal) and consistent in my discipline and consequences, or they won't respect my rules and authority. They need to trust that I will help them if they come to me with a problem, otherwise I'll never hear about the quiet bullying, or find out I need to make that CPS call. Sessions could range anywhere from 1 to 4 hours. What content style sessions would catch your eye (preferably things related to specifically to ELA/SS). I had 3 people that knew the principal personally & gave me a good reference. The job pays well, good benefits, 9 miles from my house (20min drive). No contract signed yet. I haven’t seen my room & still don’t know the grade I’m teaching yet. I have an interview tomorrow for the district I graduated high school from, for a 3rd grade teacher. Bit of an unpopular opinion, but a mindset that’s allowed me to make it to year 5 without becoming an alcoholic. Never let your students get away with saying something disrespectful. Now you don’t necessarily have to go full Madea and be like, “what you said?!”, but give them the floor and ask them to elaborate on what they meant. 9/10, they won’t have anything else to say. “they’Re just KIds/ their frontal cortex isn’t developed!” Okay and? I’m a freshly certified teacher looking for my first job (K-6) in NJ. I’ve seen very few openings near me for actual full time tenure track positions, but lots of leave replacements. It would make more sense if the leave replacement periods were spread out, but I’ve seen a ton of jobs in different districts that are specifically only from the beginning of the school year until the first or second week of October. I spent several years as a vice principal. Well, my wife and daughter encouraged me to apply for a Dean of Students position at the local high school. There was a last minute opening due to someone resigning a few weeks ago. My wife (a middle school ELA teacher) thinks I can help the staff out. My daughter wants me to make more money and work at the school she’ll attend as a freshman in a year from now. She actually likes going to school where I work still. So I applied for the position, went through three interviews, and just received the offer. The pay increase isn’t much, but everything helps. Plus it’s more to put into my daughter’s college fund. But there is a caveat. I will also have to teach one to two freshman social studies classes every day. Not the worst thing in the world and it
Yes I know the easy answer is “retain them”, but realistically thats never going to happen. A kid fails two grades before 6th and you now have a teenager in Elementary School. A kid fails two grades before 9th and now you have a Middle Schooler who’s driving to school. It’s incredibly hard to know what to do because socialization level and academic level can be so different. I think the answer is easier in High School because you can have them repeat specific classes until they either pass them or get booted from the system on their 21st birthday.
