I've been teaching in the same district for about twenty years. Our head custodian retired last year and another long-time custodian was promoted to his position. My relationship with her has been okay, but she can be temperamental. An example: After a field trip, I had about 100 kids eating in the auditorium since we arrived after the cafeteria was done serving food for the day. This is normal practice for a late arrival field trip. In front of students and a couple other teachers / chaperones, she got in my face and pretty much yelled at me for not letting her know kids would be eating in the auditorium. I did sign out the space through the appropriate channels at our school, and I just didn't think to tell her directly. (I always make sure the kids clean up, and when there are a few bags or bottles left behind, I go through and pick up.) So I just got my rosters for the new school year and boy am I in for a real ride. However, I am preparing myself to be the Strict, but Fair teacher For some massive context, last year was Year 1 for me. At the start, it went okay, few hiccups here and there but I managed. By the end of the year, all hell broke loose. There were several students who were just doing whatever the hell they wanted and threw a toddler tantrum when I attempted to uphold rules. Literally kids wouldn’t even ask to go to the bathroom. They would make the pass and go. Didn’t matter when. Lecture or no, they would up and go. Their response when I tried to talk to them about lines and taking over 20 minutes, were “well I had to go, you can’t punish me for that”. Phones were also a massive problem last year. Kids with the mentality of “it’s my property, you can’t take it”. Also kids weaponising their IEP/Accommodations. They were so strong headed that I just relented to avoid the headache. I’m a first year teacher teaching first grade in Virginia. I have about a week or two of PD and service days and I haven’t really heard what I’ll be doing. We start school in less than three weeks and I have no clue how many kids I’ll have, if I’ll have an aide, etc so I feel like I’m going in blind. Do I get time to set up my classroom? I just quit and took a new position in another district. I was hired to fix social studies scores for a school that has been last or second to last in the subject for 15 straight years. The first thing that happens is that I don’t have a classroom. Despite having to worry about the state test, the electives and everyone had a room But me. My class loads were double the size of my colleagues. No sped or eb supports for social studies. I told the administration and the campus about the problems and they just told me they liked my teaching so much that they knew I was going to be a success. I’m really bummed out because a month ago I had talked to a principal of a small private elementary school, she said they were going to open an art teacher position for this school year . She saw my application and resume and said someone will contact me for an interview.No one reached out to me and I called the number she personally gave me to call if I had any questions, I called that number several times and it would go straight to voicemail. I left a voicemail and no one got back to me. So I tried a different phone number listed on their website and a lady answered and I asked if there is any openings for art teacher and she said no , not at the moment. In my first three hiring seasons searching for my first admin role I have noticed the position I most often get an interview for is "Dean". While I know this title has been around for a long time, I never noticed it in public schools until very recently. From my understanding of the job descriptions I have read for these positions they basically seem to be all the stuff the Principal and AP don't want to do for pay that is barely above my teacher salary. Is "Dean" the new way districts low-ball first time admin seeking that magical "experience" everyone seems to want without giving you a chance? I hope I'm not breaking any sub rules posting this, just wanting to help out my fellow teachers. I know we're all tired of the same repetitive videos year after year. I searched around a bit and found a solution, hopefully it will work for others as well. Video Speed Controller is a Chrome extension, it allowed me to speed up the training videos and finish them much more quickly. Under Settings > Advanced, add a site rule for your training videos. Second year teacher, 24F. Still working through completely certification, just need to take my PPR. Last year, I had some trouble connecting with most students. I would really try my best, but I think maybe I’m autistic (not a joke). My humor can be very dry and sarcastic at times so it can be hard to tell when I’m joking (sometimes I do this on purpose bc it makes the joke funnier, to me). I’m going to try a different approach this year because trying to connect through humor did not seem to help. When I asked admin for advice, they said “greet them at your door” (I teach high school and there have been instances kids steal tests or answers or assignments or just get into teachers desks. I’m not standing at the door. I would lock them up, but nobody has keys to the cabinets that lock in the classroom. We put materials in a file cabinet in a separate locked room. Hi So I got my preliminary last year in California and got hired into the district as a temporary teacher. I taught 8 years before in charter schools. I a great teaching year but not so much with staff. There was no room left for me to return to a classroom so I had to go to matter what. I didn’t find out until after the school year that the principal said although he’s a great teacher I wouldn’t rehire due to temperament. The Union mention that if I was told this before the school year ended they could have helped but now there’s nothing to do. The school district says I can remain “in the substitute pool”, but the Union says everyone who I would want to put me in a permanent position can see the principle said not to rehire. I spoke to the old principle and they said they be willing to speak or email anyone in the district about her honest opinion. I’m afraid now I can’t work in the city’s school district and have to move away. Which I don’t want to do but I feel lost and hopeless. s
I read up on the Mississippi changes to education. I find it interesting that they hold kids back at third grade. I teach 6th grade ELA and I see so many kids come into my class with very low reading scores. Honestly, by the time they get to middle school, a lot of bad outcomes are far more likely to occur. The number of kids who come back from a second grade reading level in sixth grade is very few. They get put in my classroom with very little in the way of support. I had a student who was basically illiterate. He could sound out words if you worked with him, but he wasn't able to read anything on his own. We tried to discuss things with admin and reading interventionists, but they rarely had any applicable suggestions. One on One, sentence stems, para support, and other accommodations are useful, but he doesn't know his letter sounds. Something I've always stood by that I am not seeing posted anywhere is start singing now new teachers. In the car, in the shower, when and where you can. Start weeks before school starts because you need to train your vocal cords to get used to the amount of talking and projecting that you are going to be doing once school starts. Without it, I always end up with a sore throat by the end of the first week. Edit: I will add, as others have pointed out-a mic and speaker setup is a great option for many people. I personally do not use them, but even with one the amount of speaking you do in the first week after a summer off will wear your throat out. Others have also suggested watching some voice training videos online to better train the voice for speaking-a very good suggestion as well. Tonight I randomly thought about my elementary school teacher and decided to look her up online. I wasn’t expecting anything, maybe an old school page or a picture, but instead I found her obituary. She had passed away a month ago, and somehow I’m only finding out now. It completely broke me. I’m lying in bed crying over someone I haven’t seen in years, and it feels strange because I didn’t expect something like this to hit me so hard. I think it made me realize just how much of an impact teachers have on us. They spend years helping shape who we become, encouraging us, teaching us, making us feel safe, and being there during such an important part of our childhood. As kids, you never think your teachers will get older or that one day they’ll be gone. You just assume they’ll always be there. Then years later you randomly search their name and find out they’ve passed away. I wish I had known sooner so I could’ve paid my respects. It’s also making me think about how fast time is moving.
Hello Everyone! A fun little class was added to my schedule this year lol I am an instrumental music teacher thats been leading performing ensembles for the past 10 years. For reasons I dont exactly understand, I have been given a Freshman Advisory class of 37 students and apparently I am borrowing a classroom from another teacher who is an itenerant to lead that 1 class everyday. Hi Teachers, Going through school I always enjoyed the pizza parties/celebrations/ice cream days, etc. And now that I have a little one going to school I’m excited for her to have that experience too. I know teachers are oftentimes saddled with paying out of pocket for some or all of these if Admin isn’t kicking back to cover the costs for these, with many using them as a reward for goals achieved, and milestones met. My question: is it typically OK for a parent to occasionally sponsor one of these events? I don’t have a ton, but could definitely justify shelling out $100-$150 for a classroom party every few months, even if just to allow them more frequently or prevent them from not happening at all. I’d even be open to covering the cost of a field trip for the class, or any of the kids who couldn’t come up with the funds, as I was that kid and am thankfully in a different position as an adult. I am a pretty experienced teacher and focus my classroom management around building relationships which has worked well for me overall. This past year I got a new role as an interventionist, and sometimes had to skip my intervention groups to sub in a classroom. This is where I ran into problems because I didn’t have relationships with the kids. I am a short woman, and am naturally a very kind and nurturing person. I have a calm, quiet voice and the moment the kids see me coming in to sub they think they can get away with anything. I don’t let them and am strict about rule following, but I’d like to develop an air of…toughness. Like an “I don’t play” vibe. How do I do this? I have a coworker who subs frequently too and it goes much better for her just because she has this kind of toughness about her. Hey everyone I took my MTTC 103 today for the first time and did not pass. I won’t know my results until August 14 I think. I am very disappointed in myself because I took the time to study and I know I’m not a good test taker but that was nothing like the practice exam I took except half the questions and the other half I really don’t understand where they got them from. I got questions about number binary and whatnot and I never learned that when I was a kid or in college! I’m really frustrated I spent money on study dot com and that was not helpful. The study guide was also very different. I don’t know. What’s everyone’s advice? Fellow EL Coordinators or EL teachers - how do your schools schedule your ELs? Our school has overhauled our EL scheduling and it’s a mess right now, two business days from teachers returning and a week and a half from kids returning. A little over a third of our large urban high school are active ELs, and we have around 50 students who have less than three school years in the country (high immigrant neighborhood). Most EL classes, both ESOL/ELD and EL-specific cores, are wide mixes from students with the highest language needs (WIDA 1.0, words and phrases) to almost exiting the program (4.6). As an EL-specific core teacher, this seems insane . Previously, they were leveled - I taught the mid-levels (high 2s to mid 4s) and another teacher taught the lower proficiency students (1s and 2s, mostly newcomers). I’m a teacher with a toddler who is very active. We have such little paid time in the classroom to prepare and his daycare doesn’t begin until my contract officially resumes. I’m feeling so stressed wondering how I’ll get everything ready. I don’t even know how I’ll unpack the car with him present. I need to collate and decorate and I feel so stressed. Since April I’ve been routinely checking Seattle, Highline, Tukwila, Renton, Kent, Federal Way, and Auburn. There’s nothing. I’ve heard rumors that August is the new status quo for external hires (not April or May anymore). I’m a first year teacher - hopeful. Hi everyone, I wanted to get some advice. I have really good behavior management, and with great behavior management comes the most insane kids in my classroom because I can “handle” it. I don’t mean to be negative because I love teaching, but I’m getting pretty burnt out because every year my class is super stacked with challenging students (to say the least). Hey All! I recently posted that I had an interview on a Saturday. But if I hadn’t heard back by now I assume I didn’t get the job. I was teaching 6th grade math but was dropped due to budget cuts (I’m in Florida). At least that was the official reason. I have had plenty of interviews including one at a new charter school opening up. I actually was asked to return for a second interview! I would prefer to be in the public school system over a charter school but right now I just want a job. It stinks that I and many are in this position due to budget cuts. My old school recently posted my old job and I did apply. But I doubt I’ll get it. If they wanted me they would have found a way to keep me. They also have my info to contact me. We start orientation on the 10th, and the first day of school is the 24th. We’ve reached that time of year again! It’s almost time to get our rosters, where 15/30 students have 504s and IEPs, and nearly every accommodation has been selected for them. All 15 need to be near instruction, have frequent check ins, extended time, reduced workload to show mastery, the ability to leave the room upon request, and separate testing with a teacher or supervisor who doesn’t exist. You begin to realize quickly that it’s basically impossible to enforce consistent rules and procedures since a majority of students are an exception to whatever rules you’re trying to institute. We desperately need SPED reform. I dare any principal, case manager, counselor, or school executive to say that the current setup is realistic or doable. At our school, 504 accommodations are rarely even based on substantive data! But that doesn’t stop them from checking every box without a thought as to how teachers will implement 20 accommodations per day. My proposal: limit the number of accommodatio
I teach summer school and the students get lunch before they're sent home at noon. We were in the cafeteria and another teacher ran to me asking for help. One of her students (who was my student this past year) was kneeling on the floor. She was choking on a corn dog. I was able to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on her and she is ok. I’m trying to max out my salary in a Chicago suburban district. I need the classes to be graduate-level, online and our contract recently changed to where the classes “must be toward some sort of certificate or degree”. I don’t actually have to earn the certificate, but I need proof that the class actually goes toward some kind of certificate if that makes sense. I need 3 more courses (technically 9 hours but ya know… most classes are 3 so yeah) I can’t do the wonderful Idaho State classes anymore since they don’t offer additional “certificates” and I am absolutely done with shelling out money to La Verne University’s current debacle of online classes. I’m a 2nd grade teacher and part of our “policies and procedures” committee for my building. We have a new principal this year, and we will be having interventionists working in the hallway/pod space with students. This will be “their” space and they will not have offices. They will be out there all day. Because of this, he doesn’t want us to do whole class restroom breaks. In the past, we’ve lined kids up and supervised them in the hall while they take turns going. (The expectation has always been silence, and sometimes we have them bring books or work as well, but this is a no go for him). We do one break in the morning and one in the afternoon for each class, and we’ve found that this cuts down on kids asking to go between breaks. I don’t think it will be successful to do no breaks and only send kids asking needed from class. Any ideas on what to do? We’re supposed to come up with a plan for the building. So yesterday was my first day teaching third graders, it went ok! I did okay I think, 90%of my class left saying I was their favorite teacher(taking this with a grain of salt because they’re 8 and it’s the first day but still) except I’ve felt very uneasy about one interaction. Hey everyone, I could really use some advice or just some peace of mind from other teachers who have navigated alternative certification nightmares. I’m on an Alternative Route to Licensure (ARL) pathway for state of Nevada. Right before the school year starts, my principal emailed to tell me I'm being reassigned from my 5th-grade classroom to a small-group interventionist role for grades 4 and 5. From my understanding (and my program's rules), an intervention or support role doesn't meet the state's mandatory "classroom of record" requirement for my residency, which directly puts my conditional license in jeopardy. Single teachers: how do you feel when people flirting or hitting on you say, “I wish you were my teacher”; “I would have paid so much better in school if you were my teacher”; “You’ll be some students’ sexual awakening.” (No joke, I have been told this before.) I am a high school ASL teacher. This upcoming year, I’m likely going to have a high school student in our teaching program where they learn how to be a teacher by shadowing a mentor within a classroom of their choice, kinda like an internship. I want to make sure they are truly learning, especially at the beginning of the year, when they are stuck to watching my lessons and activities. I feel it would be beneficial for them to write notes and such when they’re stuck to observing, but I also am aware that they’re still only in high school. I’m considering giving them prompts to be on the lookout for during my lessons, things like “what is something you noticed about the type of language I use when teaching ASL 1 students?” Of course we would discuss their notes during any free time, so this student teacher would be able to apply these things later down the line when teaching their own lessons. Honestly, this job hunt was brutal—way harder than when I was a first-year teacher, and I still don't fully understand why the market felt so tough this time around. Since May, I’ve been on 7 different interviews, dealing with the usual radio silence, rejections, and endless waiting. About a month ago, I interviewed for a position I really wanted. Hello! I have been teaching in a pretty old school building for the past 2 years. Since starting at this school I have been sick a lot. At first I thought maybe it was because I moved from states and was dealing with different allergens but I really think a lot of it has to do with the school building itself. Other teachers also notice more sickness while in the building and I have brought up possibly finding air purifiers for our rooms. Does anyone else teach in an older building and have an air purifier that has helped?
