PD bingo ideas

Hey there! A friend and I are making funny bingo cards to pass the time during our back to school PD meetings. I’m looking for funny additions to put on them. I’m thinking things like “the presenter says data driven” or “write a response on a sticky note activity” submitted by /u/Difficult_Two_2201 [link] [comments]

What foods/beverages keep you going thru the teaching day?

I’m running on energy drinks and go-gurt type snacks just to maintain throughout my schedule but I’m assuming you guys are healthier and have your life together so how do you do it? What snacks or anything do you all bring to work to keep your energy up to do everything teachers are tasked with doing while at campus? (It’s like we have no down time from the minute we get to school to the minute we leave…and still it follows us home too.) I love the teaching life I just need better eating habits but how do you actually blend the two? submitted by /u/AdvancedStrawberry7 [link] [comments]

Students can’t pronounce words with “r”?

I teach in Arkansas, and I’ve been seeing an alarming amount of kids that cannot properly pronounce words with “r”. For example, “sister” is pronounced “sista”. “Problem” is usually “pwoblem”. Is this happening in your schools, too? What do you think is the cause of this?? How do we fix it? Edit: I teach 8th and 9th grade. submitted by /u/Confident-Change-799 [link] [comments]

OFFERED POOR PAY?!

To sum it all up. I was offered a job position of $31 from a hospital that I previously left (2 mo ago). Prior to my resignation, I had a base of $31, shift diff of $6, plus the hospital monopolized and $4 more were added prior to me leaving. I made $41/hr! HR at this other job position said to me and I quote… “because you’re a rehire with 3 years of experience we’ll have to drop your rate back down to $31/hr. Are there any questions?”. I immediately said “yes, I’d like to negotiate my offer. I am currently salaried but if I were to take that into an hourly it’s $36. Could we aim for this?” … they said to me “I will reach out to the director and see what they think”. Well needless to say it’s been about a week now and no response from them and honestly I’m okay with that. The least they could’ve done is matched my current pay. I even excluded the shift diff! That’s ridiculous. Especially since I’m not new grad. The sad thing is I’ve had 2 years prior of vascular surgery, general surger

Modern Medicine doesn’t value quality of life in America

What the title says. The amount of patients I see that are continued to be hospitalized when their outcome isn’t necessarily going to improve is a lot on my surgical floor. We are a level 1 trauma with no nearby level 1’s so I get to work with many TBIs, some hospice and a surprising amount of demented patients (high fall population). I get that there may not be a better place for them to go, but sometimes, many times, it seems like there has to be. And if there isn’t, then we need to be better ourselves at accommodating these complex conditions. I sit often, as I’m still a tech. I get to spend 12 hours locked in rooms with these types of patients often. It hurts my soul watching these people remain bed ridden, possibly restrained, in an unfamiliar place with sparse visitors. To be so alone, confused, and with no light at the end of the tunnel, is incredibly depressing. That’s not to say I hate my job though, because these issues are the reasons I love it. I get to be the person who is

Kids not bringing supplies

So I teach middle school science. Love it! One of the things I detest though is kids not bringing paper. Like a month after school starts, they just don’t care. I’ll email their mom and the mom will go buy paper, but the kid doesn’t bring it to class. So this year they get a piece of paper that I exacto knifed out of composition notebooks. They’re going to complain that there’s no hole punched or that the edge is wonky. To which I will reply, “If you don’t like my paper, you’re welcome to bring your own. It’s like the golf pencil guy on here, but for paper. submitted by /u/Hungry-Following5561 [link] [comments]

The most toxic relationship ever…. Teaching

I used to love teaching—and I still do—but my love for it is different now. My “teacher job description” gets longer and longer, yet the bonuses and pay seem to become less and less. With our bonuses being cut significantly in May and no other bonuses in sight, I’m realizing just how much I’m barely surviving. And with performance-based pay… that makes it even harder. I’m sitting here making a grocery list with $10.77 to my name . That’s not even enough for a decent meal, let alone the “Meet the Teacher” one-pager that goes out tomorrow—which they prefer to be printed in color. I love my students. I love teaching. But loving what you do doesn’t make the financial reality of doing it any easier. I’m just tired… and the school year just started. submitted by /u/Exotic_Mammoth1573 [link] [comments]

My school is a jeans on Fridays school 💔

My last school did NOT care what we wore. I wore jeans and a t shirt probably 80% of the time. I wore pink crocs most days. My new school only allows jeans on Fridays and I’m pretty sad about it. I am an awkward size (short and very muscular) and professional pants rarely fit me. They’re either falling off and dragging on the floor or so tight they look like leggings. Now I have to buy a whole new wardrobe and have to be uncomfortable all day. I can’t even wear dresses because they expect us to still wear school t shirts even when we can’t wear jeans edit: Can’t reply to all comments but just wanted to clarify, school shirts aren’t required but strongly encouraged. I bought a couple skirts edit 2: The skirts look like I’m wearing some kind of sexy teacher costume oh god. It’s going to be a long year submitted by /u/TallCryptographer106 [link] [comments]

Maternity leave question

I am 25 weeks pregnant. My HR director has me scheduled for leave starting November 20th since my due date is the 30th. This year, I have 7 students. I’m a moderate to severe disabilities teacher so they are with me all day. I have one aide and she is amazing. Our case manager is not. She leaves early and gets there late every single day. The principal does nothing. They expect me to arrive before my contract time and leave 15 minutes after our ended contract time for nothing. So I have been leaving them with the SRO when the bus is late. Our case manager leaves 15 minutes early, so I’m not standing around past my time for free too. I have enough sick days that I can take off after fall break (Oct. 16th) and be out until I come back from maternity leave right before the end of the school year. My doctor said he would write a note putting me out. My principal and coworkers all think November is when I’m going to be out. Should I just come back in October saying I was written out and let

Measles

How many measles pts are you guys seeing? I work in Pennsylvania, and we are seeing multiple a day in the ED. It is absolutely wild. It is mostly in the Amish community, because they don’t get vaccinated. The frustrating thing is we never used to get measles pts with the Amish. It is because they interact with the general public, got it from the unvaccinated general public, and now it is spreading like wildfire throughout the Amish community. submitted by /u/HubbaBubbaBubbaWubba [link] [comments]

Leaving the ER. Feeling judged.

Tried out the ER for 8 months. Pretty soon into it I knew this wasn’t for me but I told myself to give it a year. I cannot do this anymore. I’m putting my mental and physical health on the line to care for people who berate me every day for things outside my control. The fact that wait times are 6 hours is not my fault. I have 3 other patients, one who is critically ill, and me not seeing you for an hour doesn’t mean I’m lazy. I’m sorry your mom got put in a hallway bed and needs to be changed in front of everyone. Being verbally and physically assaulted by drunk/high people who get a pass and come back every day to cause trouble and waste our resources isn’t my idea of fun. Stupid people are making more stupid people. I have such a pessimistic outlook on life. I pride myself in trying to provide the best care possible for my patients and that’s not possible here. We have no support from things like social work or pharmacy at night. I tried this out to expand my skillset but I’m just n

How long did it take to get tenured?

I am currently going onto my 6th year teaching in my 4th district. I get a annoyed (and somewhat jealous) when newbie teachers get tenured their second year of teaching. First year(first district): probationary year 1 and was non-reelect. 2nd & 3rd year(second district): temporary contract and was laid off due to mass layoffs within the district. 4th & 5th year(third district): probationary year 1 and probationary year 2. Was disappointed and shocked to be a non-reelect. 6th year: currently looking for a teaching position in a new district. I have heard some teachers spend years bouncing from district to district until they get tenured. I am thinking this might be the case for me. I am also contemplative leaving teaching as I do not want to continue on this path and I am beginning to worry that Principals will see a pattern that I don’t last long in a district. My teacher friend is in the same boat and during an interview the Principal asked why they should hire her if she had a patter

My patient’s rhythm conversion with digoxin

No PHI in the photos. This was about a month ago. I had an Amish patient who came in with no history for “not feeling well” due to “mild chest pressure” and was constantly in A-fib/RVR. BP was initially fine until I gave Cardizem. The push alone decreased his SBP from 140 to 100 over about 10 minutes, and the doc asked me to still start the drip and just give fluids if needed. Systolic rose to like 110ish, so I started the drip at 5. Monitor said the MAP was suddenly 50-55 at my first q5m BP with a rate still >140/150 🥲. Patient was still as responsive as before (moaning and pale but oriented x4), but I stopped the drip and could barely auscultate a manual BP while my preceptee alerted the doc. I pressured-bagged fluids in my other line while I waited. When they returned, doc looked at the patient and just sighed. We got the BP to come back up a little then pushed digoxin. Waited. Nothing happened. Waited. Nada. So my preceptee and I return to our computer just outside the room. I see

Help me understand the dying process

I had the privilege to be with my spouse as they passed. They were diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer, and honestly, the realization that "today" was THE day, took us both by surprise. Hope is blind. We both knew the writing on the wall. My spouse begged me to go home so I could be rested for the next day, and I did, but couldn't sleep so went back to the hospital. What I would like to know is how much my spouse suffered because I couldn't leave their side as they were "transitioning." My spouse was given morphine to ease their passing and I was told I should request more if they seemed like they needed it. They did. But I was so adamant about not leaving their side, I think I might have made their passing more difficult than it should have been. Watching them pass, and gasping for the last breaths is a traumatic vision I can't ignore. Please don't sugar coat anyting. I'm well aware I failed my spouse. I just wonder just how difficult it was for them. submitted by /u/Lover_of_Lucy

Escalated a patient going into sepsis during shift change, patient's daughter complained about me instead.

Caught a patient going into severe sepsis territory right before shift change and informed the docs, got a whole bunch of orders and people to come into the room right at shift change. Handed off the patient in stable condition to night shift only for patient's daughter to start yelling at me saying I was being rude and rough with her dad all day and that she was gonna report me to my manager. The reason? Because earlier in the shift one his IV started leaking so I removed it but I had to apply extra pressure because it was bleeding a lot. He screamed. He was also the type to jump and scream anytime you flushed any lines, i.e. I'm torturing him. When I was starting to sepsis bolus I couldn't find his IV for a minute so I was turning his wrists around and telling him to keep them straight. An absolute lunatic. Why I gotta do that? First time coding my own patient

I’ve been an ICU nurse for 4 years and assisted with ~3 codes in which I was either the recorder, compressor, or the one pushing meds. But last night, it finally happened to my own patient. Internally, I kept saying, “what the fuck… what the fuck… no way this is happening,” while simultaneously seeing the monitor alarm asystole, seeing the A-line go flat, and feeling no pulse. I yelled for a crash cart, then remembered I’m in a negative-pressure room with the doors closed, so no one could hear me. I ran to press the Code Blue button and then started compressions. It felt like forever waiting for the team to come in with the crash cart and Zoll. My coworker took over compressions, and I helped put pads on the patient. After two minutes of CPR, the patient had ROSC. The patient is still very sick, but alive. And for the first time, I can say I’ve actually had to code my own patient. It was such a surreal experience. What was your first code experience like? submitted by /u/Beautiful-Viol

Just started my last school year. 1 PD week down 179 school days to go!

Hey reddit. I just started my last school year. I made a post earlier in the summer that was very supportive and people asked me to document when I encounter the last time I have to do something. I am 100% retiring at the end of this school year and just found out Star Wars Starfighter is coming out on my last day of school forever, nice! 179 student contact days left, 20 sick/personal days (yes I am using them all). I just had my last ever PD week and like the many before it, this week was full of lots of wasted time doing meetings when we could have been preparing many many other things. During one of these useless PD meetings Admin referred to parent communication as “customer service….” Since I am a sped teacher, in between meetings I organized and distributed hundreds of IEPs and 504s to gen ed teachers. I also had my last argument with sped admin about how distributing paper copies of multiple 20 page documents to every teacher is a poor method of sharing legally binding informat

Management reactionary to floor staff standing up for horrible and unsafe staffing conditions.

TLDR at the bottom. Context: least paid ER in my city, level 1 trauma, 80% floor staff is travel RNs, department is in the middle of a mass exit We have a union & I'm core staff, and we have safe harbor. They are using the excuse of "orientees are extra hands" Trauma has frequently had 15:3, and we're lucky if we have a 50:2 for our lobby. We're in the middle of the eye of the storm situation where this is our lower census time of month and we're going to hit a HEAVY upswing with past trends of 90+ in the lobby holding well into the 30s for admits. Our quick turn area has frequently been used to 'stablize' resus patients who have the potential for a room vs going back to resus. Keep in mind we have ONE cardiac monitor for this area. Of course we've been breaching our protocol for patient treatment vs what our management wants. Recently we had someone die in our lobby and just a couple days ago and orientee who was being used as a functional floor staff medicated the wrong patient with

Building drama

This year is going to be interesting if the first two weeks are any indication. I just want a quiet year. I don't think I'm going to get my way. So what's the drama at your school? Make me feel like this isn't that bad. We have Incoming parents continuing an attack on another teacher because they "heard" about the "problems" from last year. The problems were that she's structured and doesn't let the kids push her around. But the attacks from parents are now reaching outside the private Facebook group. Parking spaces. Of course. We now have more teachers who need paved spots for disability access than we have paved spots. One sided drama between teachers. Teacher A is newish and hates teacher B and has not been quiet about it. Teacher A bitches about teacher B to anyone who will listen. Teacher B is an experienced teacher and is not taking the bait, using the "kill with kindness" tactic, which is causing teacher A to melt down even more. Teacher C is absolutely paranoid about something

One week in, no schedule

Third year teaching and we’re a week in with no schedule. We’ve been doing a rotation with the different grades (middle school) which isn’t the worst for me because I typically teach all of 7th grade, but my coworkers who teach advanced classes are losing their minds. And we’re being told it may not be done by Monday too! Like this seems crazy. The students are frustrated, the parents are pissed and tell us so in car line, and I had at least one coworker quit this week. How micromanaged is your school?

I’m in a title one school with probably the worst test scores I’ve ever seen. The first week of school we had walkthroughs with a bunch of people and every teacher got told they’re doing something wrong. I didn’t have my learning targets posted and I’m not doing enough anchor charts for my first graders. It’s my first year so I feel like I’m already failing! I know they’ve learned this week but it’s not visible for admin so I’m going to “play the game” and make their learning as visible as possible. Our curriculum is terrible some of it isn’t developmentally appropriate and barely aligned with anything but we have to read it word for word. Is this what it’s like to be a teacher? Why can’t I just do what my kids need? This all feels so performative. Our handwriting curriculum is the most stupid thing ever and the things I have to say almost sound sexual! Hostile ICU job advice

I’ve been a LPN for 8 years and in December I obtained my RN. I was hired for a new grad residency in an ICU. I was excited so excited , but it’s turned into a nightmare. My first day (also the entire week) I was precepted by a young nurse that in my opinion shouldn’t have been a preceptor. My first day I introduced myself and I let her know my experience, and I also identified what I thought were my weaker areas. I feel like they were weaponized against me, and I was purposefully put in situations that would make me look incompetent/ stupid. One of the areas was vents. I was doing something for a patient when she said that she would be right back. I didn’t think much of it until she wasn’t right back. The patient needed to be suctioned frequently, and I had to grab her I was inexperienced with intubated patients. I hate Facebook

I’m a teacher, and also a mom, so I’m in local mom groups. A student’s mom posted a very long, “anonymous” post about a very specific situation that happened with her child already this year. We are only in the first week. This child has already lied to her mother about me, including that I yelled at her and that someone pushed her in the face and I told her she was lying. I wasn’t even aware someone pushed her in the face. What sad is that this was a child whose behavior has been fantastic so far. An incident happened right before the weekend where if this was an older child, there would’ve been misconduct forms filled out regarding the child’s behavior. But with the younger grades, they told us to use our discretion. Maybe they don’t understand what they did, but we explained it to them and we say don’t do that again. The child was giving me dirty. Looks the whole time I was telling her this, and only when I said she would have to move her clip down did the waterworks start. And they

Day 1: Almost every kid brought a pencil to class. I only had 3 kids who didn't bring a pencil to class. I'm used to having almost half the class need a pencil. Day 2: I tell the kids they can talk to their partner while making their name tags because it is a more art-based assignment. Almost none of them take the opportunity to talk. They're just focused. In my old classes that weren't gifted, if I said they could talk, I'd have to stay vigilant to make sure no one was being too loud or overdoing it. Day 3: Kids are already emailing me about assignments, making sure they turned it in, asking why it's marked late. Meanwhile, it was just an assignment meant to take up time on the first couple of days of school,

California teachers who have been dismissed during probationary period please help.

I have a CA credential but currently teach in another state. I intend to move back to CA in the future. At my first job experience in my new state I’m experiencing a toxic work environment. My boss (not the principal) has arguments with a lot of people, expects loyalty, and for me to perform duties outside of my scope of work. I gave some pushback at the beginning and I have a feeling she wants to get rid of me. The question is, if she dismisses me, will a future CA district find out via me having to admit it on Edjoin or some kind of background check and I will be filtered out of job opportunities? How easy/hard was to find a job after being dismissed or not invited back? submitted by /u/Mardylorean [link] [comments]

People who work at district office

If you work at the district office, what do you do 40 hours a week, 5 days a week? I’m not trying to disrespect anyone who works for the district office, just genuinely curious what you guys do in your office all day every day, year round? submitted by /u/Puzzled-Bonus5470 [link] [comments]

How I learned to stop stressing about pointless meetings

I spent years silently fuming during inane, insipid presentations when there was actual work to be done in my classroom. But over the last year I calmed down. It started when I looked at my new salary agreement. And I thought, that's how much they're paying me to sit through meetings. That's what they think is a good use of my time and their money, which I finally realized is funny. Because when they do stuff like have me look at a slideshow about district goals while they read it out loud to me (written in English, my first language), they are saying that the powerpoint is more important that the work on my desk. That's what the district is prioritizing, so who even cares? And all that real work on my desk? If I don't get to it, I don't get to it. No biggie. According to the district, it was less important that those icebreakers and gallery walks anyhow. So, short on time after a morning meeting? Instead of grading those papers, just toss the assignment in the trash. Instead of preppi

Fed up with students and parents who don't know their own responsibility

I'm recently teaching 8th grade. For some reason, most parents would bug me to do something about the missing books/wallets/etc of their children (this year) Mind you, they are literally teenagers who should know their responsibilities with their own stuff. I can't help but to feel frustrated with parents who can't help but to pamper their children. This time, a student complained that she lost her wallet during a gathering, I told her to look back again and ask the custodians if it was surrendered. Look's like she didn't found it. Her mother messaged me and urged me to find it for her. It was two weeks ago. Literally the most stressing parent this year. Always asking for more, like I'm their personal assistant or nanny. I'm trying to help them to the extent I can though, it just bugs me this time. submitted by /u/Solid-Reveal-663 [link] [comments]

Accidentally became friends with a super negative coworker

So I keep to myself at work. I’m polite and helpful, but everyone knows I’m not the socializing type. I don’t engage in gossip about other coworkers and I don’t socialize with them outside of work. For that reason, I seem to get along with everyone on a surface/professional level and I like it that way. I accidentally became close with this one coworker and I’m quickly regretting it. This coworker has an issue with everyone and wants me to know about it. She’ll come to my desk and start whispering about someone sitting a few feet away. Never has anything positive to say about anyone or anything. Always in some drama with other nurses or techs. My issue is, because I’m more cordial with her at work than I am with others, people are starting to see us as a unit. I’m receiving the cold shoulder from people she’s antagonized, and that’s not the type of work environment I want to exist in. I’m really struggling with how to separate myself from her without creating drama. As a people-pleaser

My classroom is the 'boring zone.'

I teach high school kids and they are strongly addic-I mean attached to their phones. My state has a cell phone ban in school from start to end, which is great, but I don't think my students got the memo. Thus the birth of Phone Jail. I see a phone I take it! It goes in little bank bag pouches that the students lock themselves with the key and they hold on to the pouch until the end of the class period and then they can unlock the phone jail and get the P R E C I O U S!!!!! I have to do this for my seniors that are taking a college level government class....tsk...tsk The kids that get their phones yoinked from them started asking me what are to do without their phone if they were finished with their work? I told them to be bored. Stare at the wall, look out the window or watch the hands on the clock tick by. I also told them that, if they have free time, they can work on other school work....I have copies of coloring papers they can color with. I have puzzles they can put together or w
