Our school now does not want students to cut and paste. If I want the students to do a word sort and match pictures to terms, I have to cut it all out for them so they don’t waste instructional time cutting. This isn’t an exaggeration. Hi everyone, I work in a K-12 school and I teach high school. This year my own children will be in Kindergarten and second grade, and in order to save costs they will not be going to after school care and instead walking down to my room after school. Besides keeping a plethora of snacks on hand, does anyone have any tips to keep them entertained after school for about 30 minutes until my contract time is over? I’m currently an oncology rn with over 1.5 years of experience, but I also recently got out of the crisis stabilization unit for admitting to my manager that I am suicidal after a patient passed and my brain was convincing me it was my fault. I spoke to the nurses in the unit who convinced me it wasn’t. And my manager and coworkers did as well. But my brain wasn’t accepting it. I felt better after being discharged for a little bit, but now every little thing is stressing me out and things I used to have confidence in addressing myself are things I’m freaking out about now. Yesterday a patients most recent potassium was 3.5. However out EMR flags it as low. Normal in the EMR is 3.6 to 5.0 for some reason. I asked a coworker to double check orders with me and she mentioned it. “Are they doing anything about the potassium?” And I was like, “I was always told 3.5 is normal” because that’s what I was taught in school. And she was just like “yeah ok.” And signed them. But I started spiraling
This nurse cared enough to report her local sheriff department to APS. When the sheriff claimed no wrong doing, she pushed the issue and fully documented the injuries. The patient, who was in a medical crisis for FIVE DAYS in a holding cell, lost his leg and is now permanently disabled. With the help of her extensive chart documentation, he’s now appropriately suing the sheriffs department. He was never arraigned or convicted of anything, neither. Hey all, Seeking some advice here. I took a new job this year as a middle school PE teacher. This morning, a fight between two girls broke out during warmups and I stepped in between to break it up and ended up getting punched in the face. I know I shouldn’t step between them to protect myself now but that’s after the fact that I already did that. Anyway, I don’t super want to go back to teaching at this school anymore. Behaviors in addition to this are rough and I need to make sure I am in a safe environment. I’d like to speak with administration about letting me go without coming for my license so I can seek employment elsewhere. Does this sound reasonable? This may have somehow given an ounce of inspiration in the otherwise trodden down world of being a night shift nurse: A surgeon, of all people, who was trying to get my patient into the OR that night, had to cancel bc of some trauma (idk). So he told her it’s not happening. Great. Now, she hasn’t eaten in two days. I hadn’t addressed that yet. Well, he asked me about it and probably could tell it was pretty low on my priority list (it was shift change)… well, he goes down to the cafe and buys her dinner out of his own pocket and then came back up to the floor and hand delivered it. Good morning all. Just a general question. I’m 24 and am starting my 3rd school year teaching this year. I am also on my 3rd school building as well. In my experience, I’ve been one of 5 people or less in each school building I’ve worked in that were under the age of 40. I have also noticed that other new hires within the districts I’ve worked in for the most part are not younger people. I admitted a patient with stage 4 pancreatic cancer to med Surg for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain. Fecal impaction was found. So the point was to enema and laxative our way through while controlling nausea and pain. Patient was female and in early 60s. We had a lot of good conversation. She spoke with a Connecticut accent like my mother in law, who I look up to. She carried a strong, don’t-feel-sorry-for-me attitude but it was combined with sarcasm and humor. Her hair was thin from chemo, her face, gaunt. I could see what a vibrant and beautiful person she’s been all her life. I enjoyed taking care of her. I put my foot down today at a night shift nurse. I am a new hire at my job (1 month in) and i noticed this night shift RN interrupt a lot during bedside report even when i was shadowing my preceptors. I’m both a middle school teacher and a parent of school-age children. I started a part-time job a year ago in retail and was doing my onboarding training in August. The training covered a shooting scenario. In the retail setting, I was trained that my number one priority was myself. I was to do anything necessary to run, hide, or fight. I had absolutely no responsibility to the business, to the customers, or to any of my colleagues. I am to act in my own best interest with the priority to run. Juxtapose that with the beginning of school safety procedures. We are trained on lockdown protocols. But we are told that if we have the opportunity to run to take it. But as the classroom teacher, if I choose to run but not all of my students want to run with me, what is my liability? What is my professional responsibility? What is my ethical responsibility? My personal responsibility of parent to school-age children tells me to prioritize myself and do whatever I need to do to ensure I’m still

I see people hang little 50 cc or 100 cc bags primary, through a pump, and then just run it dry because they don't think about the volume they used to prime the tubing. I was that fucking visitor today and touched an IV pump. I felt so shitty having to do it and only did so after having the call light on for a few minutes. They had hung 1 g methylprednisolone as a primary in a 50 cc bag and overprogrammed it by over 25 cc. It was the same tubing I use where I work and I know for a fact the primary and extension tubing they had on there was 20-25 cc depending on how full the drip chamber was. It had just started pulling air past the drip chamber so I hit the stop button. They had programmed it for the exact amount on the bag without a thought as to how to get the half to a third of the dose that was left in the
I’m in Australia and we only use brand names for a handful of meds. Where I work, these are typically Panadol, clexane, Movicol, buscopan, tazocin, augmentin, slow K/span K and a couple more my mind is blanking on. It’s hospital policy (and AFAIK legal policy) to use generic names to avoid confusion and keep everything standardised, but we let it slide for very common ones we all know. When I watch US medical shows (which is pretty much only The Pitt anyway) or stuff on social media, I’m always surprised at how many brand names are used. I’m constantly looking up meds I’ve never heard of only to find out it’s actually something I give every day. I remember watching The Pitt and being like “wtf is Ancef is that some niche antibiotic we never use” but turns out it’s just amoxicillin cefazolin. Doesn’t this cause confusion when there’s multiple brand names available? Are generic medications not as common over there so brand names end up being used more? Edit: by “we” in my first sentence
My district is back next week and I feel like messing with my 4th graders. Maybe I can convince them I’m psychic. Is it normal to be short in the ICU every shift? Our nurses are constantly tripled with charge always in staffing, we almost never have an aide, and also get floated on a very regular basis sometimes to the ER to take 6 med-tele holds. Is this how it is everywhere? I'm on Long Island and desperate for a new job but not having any luck...I don't want to leave a day shift ICU position but not sure how much more I can take. My district has a no cellphone in class policy. The language even says that students have to place the phone somewhere according to teacher instructions. I teach 8th and 9th grade and want zero phone usage, I’m very burnt out on telling students to put their phones away and want to begin “collecting” their phones every day. My question for yall is what methods do you have for collecting phones? I have a phone pocket chart but no where good to hang it. I have heard of some doing a pencil hard shell plastic case on the desk that students put their phones in but I’m not sure if I want to clutter their desk area (although I like the idea that their phone is still near them so they feel in control). This is my third year teaching 7th grade math. Teaching is my second career, so I have the unique position of being both middle aged and a new teacher at the same time. My background is in social work. I try not to fall back on the "back in my day..." comments, as middle school looks completely different than it did when I was a preteen and its just not helpful to compare modern times to the past. Too much has changed for it to be relevant. However, there are a few skills I've found to be surprisingly lacking in today's kids. The first is that at least 75% of my students don't know their times tables. They have an over reliance on calculators and so many things are more difficult if you haven't memorized basic multiplication. The vast majority can't read an analog clock. It might as well a sundial. They're just baffled. Perhaps the biggest challenge of all is the lack of critical thinking. I’m a 1st year teacher teaching 5th grade math. I student taught 8th grade history. I was desperate for a job. I applied all summer and had very little luck, so when this school hired me, I took it. I'm a mid 30's male K-5 teacher. I've been a teacher for the last 8 years, and my job is my favorite aspect of my life. I just keep running into the same instance over and over again. Both my wife and I are teachers, I teach K-5 Music and she teaches HS Biology, I only mention this because we both have run into the same conversation with co-workers. I’m a homeroom teacher and they want me to lead my middle school class on a trip to South Korea. Is it common for homeroom teachers to be the ones responsible for taking them on overseas trips or can another teacher do it? Nothing in my contract mentions that I need to do this. I have a health condition where I need to cook for myself and cannot eat food from restaurants. I would need a few hours everyday to shop and cook for myself. I teach high school art and today was our first day back. I was looking at my attendance sheets for my classes and I had to do a double take. A name was printed twice on my attendance sheet. But, each one had a different student number assigned to it. I figured it was a clerical error and would bring it up with guidance at the end of the day. Nope. My 4A class rolls around and guess what. I have a set of twins, identical, and both have the same first and last name. 😳 I'm going to be calling one student by the first name and his brother by the last name. Why do parents do this? For context, I am a 20 yr old female nurse plus new at my job, so that’s not a good combo when telling people what to do. I work at an adolescent psych hospital, and we have mostly paper charting and have to rewrite precaution orders for every patient out in their chart. Around 11pm I was doing these rewrites which takes about an hour and a half for all 30 patients, when I asked two techs in front of me who were doing nothing and playing on their phones (not blaming them for that I’m usually on my phone when there’s nothing to do too) if they could do some charting on the computer for midnight for me since I was busy. Actual convo: Me - “hey, could either of you do the night audit since I’m doing rewrites?” A pause. We just had a staff bonding event (during scheduled PD time) and they told us right before that it was Laser Tag. Everyone else was fine with it, but I didn’t participate because I have some triggers related to guns. I checked with leadership before we left and it was a mandatory event. I just sat in the lobby with my pregnant coworker. IMO it was REALLY inappropriate to have a school event related to guns and shooting each other, especially telling us last minute. I have a different background from most of my colleagues so I’m unsure if I should bring it up, or how.
