I’m going into my fourth year teaching and pretty excited for it except for a few things. The main one I’m nervous about is that my schedule is going to be a 6 period schedule with a 5th period prep. I teach middle school (all grades, elective), and I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a prep in the middle of the day the past three years. I’m really nervous to be on this different schedule. My teacher friends tell me that having a prep towards the end of the day usually means I won’t have any energy to be productive at all. It’s gonna change my whole daily mentally schedule cuz when do I even use the restroom? I guess class change but I just had such a good routine last year ugh. Additionally, my room has a hole and mold in the ceiling. They need to make massive repairs. I have no idea the timeline. Good news is they have to replace a lot of stuff in my room (very necessary) but bad news is I have no idea how long it will take. I have larger classes and I emphasize procedures/routine
I’m a new teacher, and I was put into this PLTW training; TLDR this curriculum training is a huge waste of time and money. The lessons are completely random and I’m very confident that a non engineer wrote this entire curriculum. The materials section is by far the worst. In addition to being completely out of place from the previous lessons, there’s very little substance in them. The substance that’s in them is flat out wrong or poorly explained. My advice for anyone forced to take this training: be nice to the trainers but just finish the work as soon as possible. I got chosen to do a second interview for a school district for a general elementary job meaning the whole district is doing multiple hires from the same set of interviews. For the second interview they asked that we do a “performance task” however it’s worded very vaguely and I’m not sure if I’m supposed to teach a lesson to the panel or present a lesson plan… Here is the wording…. Alright so who was gonna tell me graduating with a history education degree and obtaining my CC endorsement was an absolute waste of time? Cause clearly my university was not on top of that at all. I graduated in spring of 2024 and have been trying to land a full time teaching job ever since. Interview after interview, I am always met with a rejection email and the advice to go back to school and obtain my Social Studies (RX) endorsement. I have completed 4 long term sub jobs, (all in social studies classrooms) and have been provided with excellent letters of recommendation from each of those schools. I thought maybe that experience would help me find a full time position. Still no. So I finally decided to go back to school, take the 5 courses I need to obtain the social studies endorsement, and continue to look for positions. Currently teaching summer school to middle school students, so these kids already tend to be on the more disruptive, lower performing side. I've never had to teach a class where ALL of the students have no paper, no pencils, trashing bathrooms, are distracted by phones/laptops, and in general have no respect for anyone at all. I know we're pretty quick to jump to assigning labels like bad parenting, mental health, and attention seeking to explain student misbehavior, but I just know in my heart that it's more nuanced than that. There has to be SOME train of thought going through these kids' heads when they decide to do what they do. It doesn't mean it was a good train of thought, but it's not like these kids are rolling D20s and consulting a table of misdeeds to make the choices that they make. Hello fellow teachers! I am about to start my 3rd year school year of teaching. I really do like teaching when it goes well, which at my school/district its about 30% of the time, but that is a different topic. Anyway, I am curious as to how many of you fellow teachers decided to leave teaching to pursue a doctorate degree to teach (or research) at the post-secondary level? For those of you that have, was landing a position extremely difficult (I know teaching-track positions tend to be easier to land than tenure-track)? Did you end up only using your doctorates degree for the pay bump in k-12? Lastly, how satisfied are you with higher ed teaching in comparison to k12? I know that you tend to have more freedom in higher ed, but you don't always have more pay (especially teaching-track positions). For background information, I live in a college town. I graduated with a degree in secondary education, and got my license in Historical Perspectives just under a month ago, so I contributed some of my failure to not having my license. I know that social studies is one of the most populated areas of teaching, but with summer coming to an end, I'm getting nervous. I have been told by many educators that are related to me that they didn't get a job until 2 weeks before the start of the school semester. I have applied to 10–15 schools within the past 3 months. I have received nothing back from 80% of them. Most of them are still open or the position is still listed. I know this is long please bear with me. TLDR: new teacher in class with teacher turnover. Targeted by first year principal. Lied to by admin and ultimately terminated even thought class saw significant growth. Unable to teach in district and is struggling to find new placement due to termination. The 4th teacher the class had that year ( a fact I was not informed of) I was hired by the district and from day 1 I felt like my principal had it out for me. My biggest goal is to become a teacher, and for the longest time I had just assumed I would teach elementary. However, as of recently i've been leaning more towards high school english, and I was wondering if any teachers would like to put their input. A lot of elementary teachers teach not only to teach, but also to connect with the younger kids, and while I would like that too, for me it's more about teaching, not correcting and managing behavior or spending my day with kids. Nothing was reported by the proctor during the exam. This is a student who I am like 99.9% certain would never cheat. As in, I’ve seen this student, when they didn’t know I was looking, refuse to give answers to another student who asked. I taught them for two years. It seems like a lot more AP students are getting these emails that exam scores are being cancelled. Is there any evidence on how accurate college board is when detecting misconduct? Ive been teaching for 3 years now but this would be my first year as a certified teacher. I have taken all the tests classes etc and am awaiting my confirmation from the state. My previous job did not renew my contract for fall. Ive been applying since March and everyone in my cohort and my coworkers from my last job who also didn't get renewed that I talked to have found jobs. Ive applied for just about every job in 4 districts and charter schools. Ive had 3 interviews in 4 months. Now it's July and all the jobs I applied for have been filled except for maybe 5 between 3 districts. I need to vent to people who get it. It's July. Last check was May 30. Next check is Aug 30. Yes I had savings. No they didn't account for inflation. This next stretch is going to be TIGHT, and Peter will be robbed to pay Paul. I was going to be ok, until the state has decided to make things difficult in claiming some money from the retirement system I am owed from my husband's estate. It's taken 3 trips to the courthouse and I fully expect another one, when if they would be upfront about what they need, I could have done it the first trip. I teach at a private school, the policy of which is "No Parent Offended". I have this really edgy teenager in my class, born and raised overseas his whole life who continues to be contradictory in every situation on our official workspace. He's intelligent but very full of himself and annoys a few other classmates (who have even requested to kick him out of the workspace) too. Anybody else out there struggling to turn off the need to be productive/busy all summer long? This isn’t a flex.. I genuinely wish I could just unwind, relax, couch rot, binge watch Netflix all summer long. But so far it’s 5 weeks into summer and I haven’t had one singular day of rest. I didn’t teach summer school but I’ve done about 100 hours of contract work for some projects I’m doing for my school district. Once I finished that I immediately moved on to tackling house projects, diy, decluttering. Plus I started going to the gym every morning.. and entertaining my own kid too. I keep thinking I should just relax and take it easy before the insanity of the school year starts over again.. but it’s like I’m stuck in this mode that I constantly have to be doing something, and usually it has to be something that I deem productive or money making. Our summer K-3 students went on a field trip to the science museum today. As we’re looking at sea lions in the local ecology exhibit, one of my second graders turns around to see three women dressed in black burqas. I work as a bike coach for kids (mostly ages 6-12), and there are these two siblings (10 and 12) that have been giving me a weird feeling. I'm not trying to diagnose them or say every strict religious family is a cult or anything, but some of the stuff they've said has me wondering if they're from some really high-control religious group. The first thing that caught me off guard was they told me they have 12 siblings. One of them mentioned he was about to become an uncle, so I asked how old the sibling having the baby was. They both said 45. Then I asked how old their mom was and they said 57, and their dad was 68. The math obviously doesn't make sense so I'm assuming they either got the ages wrong or there's something else going on there. But im mostly concerned about how they talk about anything vaguely related to religion. So for summer school, they gave us a STEAM curriculum instead of an ELA one, and while I'm upset because they didn't give us any real training or direction yet expect us to follow it with 'fidelity,' and they gave us no real paid planning time to understand the curriculum, I am appreciating how engaged the kids seem to be while building things. My summer admin gave half my supplies for one of the projects to another teacher, so instead I brought in legos and the kids are having fun using them to build their project. I forgot how cool legos were, and also how creative kids can be while building stuff. I gave 10 years to Baldi Middle School. I attended Baldi as a student, returned there as a teacher, helped build programs, raised a lot of funding ($500,000+), and worked hard to support students and the school community. When the new principal came in, things changed. Over time, responsibilities I had built and carried were taken away (sometimes without my knowledge), I was removed from spaces and programs I helped create, and I experienced a pattern of exclusion that I believe was unfair and unprofessional. Then I was told to move all my stuff into a moldy closet, which was now going to be my office. This year, all three art teachers were initially marked for forced transfer. The most senior teacher remained. I had the next highest seniority. The least senior teacher ultimately received the CTE Commercial Arts position. I tried to pursue that position the right way. Has anyone ever had students that literally tried to ruin your life? I had a handful of students that ganged up together to attack and take revenge on some students and me. I am talking about hacking and defamation and full cyber crime. This fall will be year 10 for me teaching high school social studies, specifically Government and AP Human Geography. Every single year I have completely new ideas I want to try, or small tweaks I want to make to materials I used last year. And I always think “YES this year will be IT” And then inevitably, I learn something new, something doesn’t quite go as smoothly as I predicted, I make a mental note for next year, then rinse and repeat. Every single year lol. Every year I think I become even better. So my question is, is there ever a time when you’ve reached the “end”? Like the max good teacher level? Next year we aren't able to access TPT while on school wifi. So, anything we want from TPT we need to find at home and download for printing at school later. I'm bummed out. There have been many times where TPT has saved me in a pinch on rainy days, or when I thought I had enough prepped, but my kids flew through everything quickly. Instead of throwing them on Chromebooks or taking toys out, I'd grab some supplemental practice stuff from TPT and send it to the printer. I've been experimenting with simple, low-prep ways to help younger children remember the order of the planets. One activity that worked better than I expected was cutting out paper circles in different sizes and colors to represent each planet. Students arranged them in order from the Sun while saying the names aloud. Turning it into a hands-on activity seemed to help much more than having them memorize a list. For those of you teaching elementary science, what simple activities have been the most effective for helping students remember the planets? I’m so sad. My colleague had 10 more students take the test and 84% pass rate. The biggest difference was that he has all day seniors and I had morning students. I had 28 take the test. Not one score of a 5. I feel like resigning. I’ve been teaching for 10 years and I’ve never felt such total failure. I’m so ashamed. I know people at school will gossip.
