That's pretty much it. I don't fit in at school. I love the kids and the culture of the school, in general, but I have definitely been added to a cliquey-gossipy-girly group that I don't fit in with. I am not looking to make friends at work, but it seems like I'm not heard on a professional level because of this. It really sucks and I'm not sure what to do. If I don't contribute, I know someone will go to admin and comment about it. But, when I do, sometimes I'm listened to and others I'm not simply ignored or the conversation is redirected, but looks and whispers are shared right in front of me? I'm an only child and I've always struggled with having appropriate social skills, which I'm aware of. I can either be comfortable or feel rigid and like I'm walking on ice in conversations. I've gotten a bit more toward the "fuck it" side and I've been trying to make myself comfortable. I spend a majority of my time at work, and I do feel like I have good ideas... I recently went to a conference and one breakout session was about generations (I know we've all sat through this). One quality of Gen Z that was brought up is their general ability to leave a job and not have another one lined up. Another trait is their desire to meet exact expectations but not exceed them. We all know that schools are built on the free labor of its staff. On one hand, I do commend Gen Z for putting down boundaries and not allowing themselves to be taken advantage of; on the other hand, I am curious how schools will be impacted by people not taking up extra duties or not staying at a school for long periods of time. What do other people think will be the outcome? And, do us old people need to get on board or are there things we need to do to keep school systems functioning? Hi, For context I have not taught for 20 years now. The last time I taught I was at a very challenging school with full classrooms, teaching 5 different levels and one planning period. I have been doing offered an 8th grade ELA position with maximum 16 kids, two sections of the same level , and one elective class. The rest of the day is lunch duty and planning time. Essentially I will teach three classes daily, but only two lesson plans needed. I am afraid of taking a position where I feel like I am over taxed immediately especially at my age (46). I’m attending a union leadership training and they asked for volunteers to plan an icebreaker. I’m neurodivergent and hate icebreakers, so I volunteered so that I could have control of that experience. Since most icebreakers seem superficial and trivial to me, I want to prepare three question cards for each person in attendance (20 people). The cards will be different colors for three categories: education related, you outside work, and recommendations. The idea is that you’ll start with three cards and then approach anyone who is available. You choose which card from your own hand that you want to answer and then the other person does the same from their own set. Then after you have shared your answers, you choose a card from their hand and exchange. That way you always have one new card and can change what you are answering if you wish. You can choose any color card, so if you prefer to only share answers related to education, you can collect three cards from that category in your fi
I feel like every year vandalism has become more common at my school and the consequences don’t meet the crime or don’t fix anything. I’m not sure if this is happening in other schools but when a student destroy the restroom, Chromebooks, breaking pencils, etc… the punishment doesn’t feel like anything was accomplished and eventually the student vandalism’s behavior becomes a norm. For example, students puts a banana in the restroom clogs it, and the result is a small suspension(1-3 days), apology letter, and maybe helping (if you call it that) custodians after school clean the campus for a day or two. The next week the very same student breaks a desk or any other random x thing and the pattern repeats itself. Hi guys, For context - my son attends an independent private school. His teacher was terminated due to a couple of parents complaining about her teaching methods and how she handles behaviour in class. The parents and staff were left in a state of shock when she was terminated effective immediately. There was a decent uproar about it amongst parents and staff members. She didn't even get the chance to say goodbye to the students. Anyways, she's wanting to take legal action and asked me to write her a reference on how good she was to my son and what I think about her as a teacher. I understand my reference may be used as a statement if she's going to take legal action. I truly believe she was treated unfairly and think she was an amazing teacher. I had no issues with her and really loved her just as a person in general. I want to write the reference for her, but I'm also wary as we intend to send all of our kids to the school from prep to year 12. I want to back her as she's an amazing
Many teachers (and students and parents) rightfully complain that modern school administrators don't do enough to protect classrooms from the disruptions caused by students with behavioral problems. One reason is they are afraid of being sued by the parents of disruptive children. The Masschusetts Appeals Court recently ruled in favor of a school in Doe v. Hi Reddit, My teacher preparation program did not cover classroom management, and my last teaching job was a disaster. I didn't know when to ask questions and when to not do so. Even though I have several years of private school "teaching" experience, I've never been responsible for classroom management until I took a job at a Texas middle school. It was a decent school, but my poor self onboarding left me not really clear on what was in the pacing guide, or even where it was. I'm not really sure how everything sort of fell apart at that job, but it did, and I resigned shortly before Covid. Let me start by saying that my son's music teacher is super sweet. She has been teaching him for two months now and just recently every time he memorizes a song she will buy him a rather expensive gift. The first one was about $25 and she promised him two more for memorizing two additional songs that would probably total up to $50. While I appreciate how kind and generous she is, something inside is telling me this is wildly inappropriate. I want to know, in the secondary world, (Middle/High School), are there a lot of teachers only at a specific level only because the other option wasn’t available for whatever reason at the time? I’m asking mostly because every time I meet someone who has said they have done both in-person, (MS and HS), they tend to say that they preferred one over the other. I don’t necessarily see the same situation with teachers that have worked ES and MS or ES and HS. The main reason I’m asking is because I’ve been interviewing at MS and HS at various districts and trying to judge the best opportunity for me personally, (relocation, school culture, financial/income, and where I would fit in the best). I had a great nannying job in my neighborhood and that contributed. College was easy for me, finding a teaching job afterwards was not. Once I finally did, I felt immensely underprepared. I am in about my 4th year of teaching and have grown in teaching strategies, classroom management, parent communication. I tend to coach new teachers, I like to research, I enjoy the act of teaching and seeing when something clicks for a child. I like to tutor one-on-one for struggling readers. My first year of homeroom teaching I had a violent student that hit students almost daily, would hit and made me go to the emergency room because he kicked me in the groin area. I was fine. Admin eventually fired me after they started barring me from meetings about said student and blamed me on not "having enough authority". Second year, I come back with more structure, strictness and no-nonsense. My class was also a lot more easier to manage. I make strides in coaching and leading fellow teachers on curriculum and best practices, and the principal of that moment would make me go to 1 hour meetings about my hairstyle, my dress or that making kids write in a journal was against "best practices".

I have been a teacher in CA (in one of the higher paying districts in the bay area) for 9 years and just transferred to a new district for this upcoming year. I plan to get pregnant in the next year, ideally having a baby in May or early summer. I understand that some benefits do not apply to me until I have worked for the district for a year (which SUCKS). I am pretty worried about my finances as my partner makes less than me. I know teachers don't qualify (yet) for fully paid leave, so what can I do for now to prepare as best as I can? I have heard I should buy state disability insurance? Is that true and if so, through who? Is there other leaves or insurance I should get or apply to? Our admin rolled out a new phone policy this year, basically zero tolerance, phones get confiscated and held in the office until a parent picks them up if a student is caught using one during class. On paper it sounds great, less distraction, more engagement, all that. In practice it's been a mixed bag. Some kids have genuinely adjusted and seem more present in class. Others have just gotten more creative about hiding them, or it's turned into a constant power struggle that eats into actual teaching time when I have to stop and deal with it. Curious how other schools are handling this. Is your policy strict like ours, more lenient, or somewhere in between? I’m in a really strange position and I don’t know what to do. I work at a private school and have been looking to leave. I interviewed at another private school in the area, and I was contacted by their HR department and told that they essentially want to extend an offer to me, but because I’ve already signed a contract with my existing school, they can’t do that until I tell my current school I want to get out of my contract. This new school also won’t tell me any information about my salary or compensation because they can’t “officially” extend me an offer. So I’m supposed to go to the admin and tell them I want to leave without a guaranteed offer of employment from another school or even an idea what my salary might be? I’m also worried I could put my existing job at stake. Last year a teacher was let go mid-year for making a comment that didn’t align with the strict religious views of the school. Every couple years, it's like there's a new curriculum or program being pushed. Teachers who have found things that work for them are expected to change to fit whatever the new fad curriculum is. At my old school, we switched programs 3-4 times in one year, but when students were struggling it was looked at as a teacher problem rather than a structural one. My current school forced a program on us and actively would come to observe us just to make sure we were following it. They would even pull us out of class multiple times throughout a semester to make sure we were aligning everything to the curriculum. Meanwhile, as we got close to the state test, we had missed so many class due to curriculum pull out. This past year, we, as a department, agreed to do novel studies. Today, about a week and a half into my summer break, I am doing jack shit. It’s noon and I haven’t gotten out of bed yet. My only goals for today are to clean out the fridge and return some bathing suits. My stepkids are with their mom and my husband works a few days in the office, so I’m taking advantage of some very rare alone time to be lazy without feeling guilty. im working summer school at a new school. ive been given a partner teacher to run my class with. this past school year was my first year as a teacher, and this is my first year doing summer school. my partner teacher is a seasoned vet, 20+ years at this school. every day, she talks to me like im a complete idiot. she ridicules me for the smallest things, even in front of the students. she blames me for things that arent my fault, such as my computer not working. she gets mad if I dont take care of housekeeping-type things around the classroom (like changing the date on the board), but she doesnt take care of them herself. she also does things like change our schedule and get upset if I try to stick to the established schedule how do you handle this? The reasoning for the double block hatred was not enough time to prep for courses. For a day in my city, I think like this: Single block - 6 classes and ~1h each. I have respondus for test taking. And recently i have had the issue where ill get a pop up saying i tried to use a swipe feature and it gives me a warning (dont know what the swipe feature is). Or my mcafee antivirus protection expires and it pops up on my screen like a notification . Or i get system notifications. This has never happened before i’ve been using respondus for years. I just got kicked out of my exam today for the first time for the mcafee antivirus and “swipe feature”. I turned off my notifications in settings but i genuinely don’t know if that prevents system notifications during my exams like something failed to download because it pops up in the middle of screen and forces me to answer. Hello! I am moving from teaching at a university to teaching at a private high school after finishing my doctorate. I have recently learned that since I will be teaching Latin (so not a “core” subject), I will have to “time share” a classroom with one or two other teachers; I would use it for 3 or 4 grade levels per day [though I might be in different classrooms, too, I’m not sure!] In some ways, this is sort of familiar coming from a university setting, but I’m worried that I’ll struggle to engage students and stay organized if the room is not fully “mine”, if that makes sense. Any advice on sharing a classroom? Esp. re: 1) materials and papers [note: no-tech school, so students do not have devices], 2) classroom management (a lot of tips I see rely on specific “corners” or “zones” for developing routines), and 3) how to set the vibe for class (Latin) in the same way that someone who has a static classroom can with decor, posters, and displays. I'm an assistant kindergarten teacher. I obviously have students who really like and appreciate me and other students who do not. I was wondering how to get over the students who are like "ahh, I wish Ms X was here!" when Ms X is only here on Fridays and does nothing besides play with the individualized student. I’m a first-year teacher and I just survived a situation that completely blindsided me. I did my student teaching in a high-needs district where behavioral issues were loud and overt—yelling, disruptions, etc. I knew how to handle that. I was not prepared for this . This past year, I taught a de-tracked, mixed-level freshman math class (combined college prep and honors). The curriculum is strictly inquiry-based and collaborative. My daily routine was a short, combined mini-lesson, and then students broke into groups. The honors kids got a challenge worksheet meant to force them to "productively struggle," collaborate, and deduce advanced concepts together. Enter Student A. She is objectively a top-tier student—top 5% of her class, incredibly high GPA, completely compliant, and always turned her work in early. I'm in the middle of certification exams, but aside from fishing for grist for essay question answers, it's a real concern. I was never bullied in school. However, I was mostly isolated, and I didn't feel empowered enough to seek out help versus handle my emotions on my own. If I'm privy to a situation where a student's being bullied, or suspected of being bullied, how can I best help them?
