First year teacher! I had an interview last week and was offered the job for a 4/5th ELA grade teacher (don’t know the exact one yet). I had 3 people that knew the principal personally & gave me a good reference. The job pays well, good benefits, 9 miles from my house (20min drive). No contract signed yet. I haven’t seen my room & still don’t know the grade I’m teaching yet. I have an interview tomorrow for the district I graduated high school from, for a 3rd grade teacher. Small school, better pay than the other & about a 3.4 mile drive (10min). I always dreamed of coming back & teaching in this district. I haven’t been offered the job yet but I would definitely want to accept if I got it. I have two littles also, one going into kinder in our town, my other is 15mo. Bit of an unpopular opinion, but a mindset that’s allowed me to make it to year 5 without becoming an alcoholic. Never let your students get away with saying something disrespectful. Now you don’t necessarily have to go full Madea and be like, “what you said?!”, but give them the floor and ask them to elaborate on what they meant. 9/10, they won’t have anything else to say. “they’Re just KIds/ their frontal cortex isn’t developed!” Okay and? I just worked a 12 hour night shift last night and it was super super busy. I’m a float pool nurse and I was on a floor that purposely gives us the hardest patients because “we get paid more so we should have to work more” and boy did I work. I was giving a pretty complex patient to a nurse who is the type that never uses report sheets and always stays super late because shes always goofing off when she’s not with patients and doesn’t finish her charting. Well anyways I was still in the middle of charting on a completely different patient as 7am because I was so busy last night and she came up to ask for report. I told her what I could remember off the top of my head but literally so much happened with this patient that I knew I was missing something but I couldn’t remember what. I told her please read my note it’s super detailed and I know I’m forgetting something (the thing I forgot to say was in there) but she NEVER READS. I’m a freshly certified teacher looking for my first job (K-6) in NJ. I’ve seen very few openings near me for actual full time tenure track positions, but lots of leave replacements. It would make more sense if the leave replacement periods were spread out, but I’ve seen a ton of jobs in different districts that are specifically only from the beginning of the school year until the first or second week of October. I’m just wondering why that date range in particular is so popular? Is it just teachers extending their summer break? Do they not want to deal with back to school night? So, I was never planning to leave the classroom to go back into admin. Been there, done that. I love being in the classroom and being an administrator is stressful and not always worth the pay bump. I spent several years as a vice principal. Well, my wife and daughter encouraged me to apply for a Dean of Students position at the local high school. There was a last minute opening due to someone resigning a few weeks ago. My wife (a middle school ELA teacher) thinks I can help the staff out. My daughter wants me to make more money and work at the school she’ll attend as a freshman in a year from now. She actually likes going to school where I work still. So I applied for the position, went through three interviews, and just received the offer. The pay increase isn’t much, but everything helps. Plus it’s more to put into my daughter’s college fund. Yes I know the easy answer is “retain them”, but realistically thats never going to happen. A kid fails two grades before 6th and you now have a teenager in Elementary School. A kid fails two grades before 9th and now you have a Middle Schooler who’s driving to school. It’s incredibly hard to know what to do because socialization level and academic level can be so different. I think the answer is easier in High School because you can have them repeat specific classes until they either pass them or get booted from the system on their 21st birthday. I was talking about this with two of my close friends who also work in healthcare. They are both guys, 40s, and pretty attractive and in good shape. They were describing to me how nice everyone they work with is to them compared to how their coworkers are to other employees who are women. For example, my one friend started on a new unit at the same time as a new female nurse. Everyone was so helpful and nice to him, but were super critical of and unkind toward the new girl. I don’t know if it’s because the nursing profession is predominantly women so there’s more cattiness towards each other or if my coworkers just had pretty privilege lol. I got hired at a new school and the teacher before me had been in this room for 10 years. Well the teacher got an instructional coaching position and left all of their unwanted crap in every single cabinet. There’s not a single empty cabinet for me to put my things in. I’m an experienced teacher, so I already have a bunch of my own stuff, meaning I now have to completely clean out all of their stuff before I can even put my own crap away. I’m sick of teachers doing this. It’s a common thing in the education world (at least from my experience) and admin needs to start making sure teachers completely clean out rooms before leaving. I understand that there might be a lot of useful stuff, but put it in boxes in the hallway, don’t leave your mess in the classroom for the next teacher to clean up. It’s hours of added work on top of the stress of having to organize my own stuff and set up a new room with limited time and it’s not my job to clean up the mess of another teacher. Rant over. Edit
I cannot count the times that I mention my work in home healthcare, nurse tech positions, or as a pediatric nurse intern and the very next thing said to me is some form of, "wait so do you have to help people shower???" Yes Brittneigh, I help people shower, get dressed, use the bathroom, and eat. Heck I wipe people's butts and put cream on them! These are base tasks for any care taking job. No, I don't care that you could "never do that" because its "weird" or "awkward", and I especially don't want to hear about how you feel it must end up being sexual. These are my patients, they have inherent dignity as human beings and the fact they need help with something that is usually private does not detract from that dignity, for either of us. before i say anything else: i’m in therapy, i do ERP, i take medication, i knew what i signed up for when i applied to nursing school. i have OCD and most of my obsessive thoughts are related to harm/injury/death. i’m wondering if there are any nurses here with OCD who can offer some advice for navigating the profession with this condition? i’ve done enough work in therapy to get to a good manageable place with most of my symptoms but of course im worried all that progress will be wiped away. if i can help it, i’d rather not tell anyone at my program or eventual job about my OCD; i don’t want anyone to think i’m not capable of being a good nurse and while i’m sure most people would be chill about it, i’m not sure i want to risk it. any advice, tips/tricks, words of wisdom, etc are appreciated. submitted by /u/Big_Strawberry_9387 [link] [comments]

Hi nursing family! I just want to rant a bit. I've been looking into transferring to another specialty because I've been working in my specialty (neurosciences/telemetry/trauma) for 3 years now and I'm getting severely burned out. On top of that, I have been harassed at work by another coworker and eventually HR got involved to stop the physical harassment but the psychological is still happening, to a point where I would get physically sick to work with that individual. However, it seems like I can't get a position anywhere as an internal hire despite people around me keep telling me I got the skills and the qualifications (charge nurse, resource nurse, preceptor experiences). I feel miserable coming to work and overall frustrated with my situation. Deciding to transfer is not an overnight decision. Today I enter one of my patient’s rooms. He’s in room 1 right across the nurses station (for reasons). I see my perfect PCA changing the pt because he had a BM. Then I see it…… The patient’s male purewick. The pouch is FILLED to the brim! Glowing under the fluorescent lights like golden balloon! I’ll try to keep this semi short. At the start of last school year I was briefly displaced and worked at another high school from August to October. My time there was pretty miserable mostly due to one student who had some severe behavior problems. I was at the start of my third year and maybe ill equipped to work with this kind of student as she quickly became notorious around campus for disruptive behavior, getting into fights, antagonizing peers and staff. The coteacher I worked with who was also her case carrier was even shocked by her behavior and he’s been teaching for 15 years. At one point before I left there was one big incident with this student where she did throw an eraser at my head when I had my back turned to her. This led to an involvement from our union rep, parent meeting and her being permanently removed from my class. I work at a hospital as a nurse extern. I figured once I graduated they would hire me on my unit. No, so I applied for two other units and didn’t get hired either. They don’t even call me to let me know. They don’t answer when I call just an automated email a month later saying the position was filled by someone else. Applied again and after multiple weeks not even an email. This is literally the only hospital in town. The application and denial process always take at least a month. I have no pct shifts. I have been told by people at my hospital that I should not work there anyway because it’s awful but I can’t help it… I literally feel like a fool. I hate it. Hey yall, I’m a new RN about to graduate in a few months, and I’ve landed a job in the Neuro ICU. I’m posting this because as I’m getting so close to graduation I’ve been feeling a lot of anxiety regarding starting my career as a nurse. I feel really confident in what I’ve learned and my ability to apply my knowledge, but I think getting so close to graduation is making me second guess myself. I feel like I know a lot but I just don’t feel like a “nurse” just yet if that makes sense. I’ll be in a 16 week orientation on the ICU, so I’ll have a lot of time with a preceptor before I’m officially handling my own team, but Im just self-conscious about my skills heading into it. I just had my first baby 3 weeks ago. I adore her even though she’s truly a sack of potatoes at this point. But I can’t help but yearn to go back to work. I’ve been unemployed since the start of my second trimester (rough pregnancy). Before that, I was a teacher for about 10 years. I LOVE teaching. More of a vent post than anything. Was in CVICU for 2.5 years and got out because of the stress and constant running around. Didn't even sit for more than 10 minutes at a time. Thought going into pacu would change things. Pacu isn't any easier almost a year in. On Thursday, I had to do post mortem care for a premie baby on the adult side of pacu. Was told it was 18 weeks but when they brought him down, he had to be 5-6 pounds and further than that. Obviously was incredibly attentive to the parents and gave them time to say goodbye. Then I had to undress the baby and put him in a damn fucking bucket and take him to the morgue. They can't come up with more than a fucking bucket? Pushing his little arm through his sleeve still haunts me. Poor mom asked me to keep him wrapped in his blanket. Worst shift ive ever had, 9 years in. My team of 3 (elementary school) plans together. I joined the team two years ago, after 5 years on a different team in the building that I got along well with - we didn’t plan together, but always shared resources. I’ve had a system for my lesson plans for years where I keep everything in a Google sheet with the first tab being links for important documents, websites, and resources, followed by tabs with student info/data, then lessons. I shared this my first year on the team, but no one took me up on any of it or even commented on it, so I assumed they didn’t find it helpful. I continued using it on my own, in conjunction with the team planning sheet. Tl;dr: Just needed to vent. I’ve spent most of my time in education teaching at IB schools, and I can safely say that I cannot stand IB schools. At the end of the day it’s just more work on teachers. You could argue that I just haven’t found the school that “does IB correctly”, and you’d probably be correct. But at least in Northern Virginia in Prince William County, IB is just a framework given to Title 1 schools to increase enrollment. IB and Title 1 DO NOT MIX. If you knew anything about the demographics of our schools you’d know it’s just done for theater. If the county actually gave a damn about following the IB framework, they’d do something about all these behavior problems. But that’s neither here nor there. First, every Positive Polly pulls this crap—equating any complaint with misery and hatred—and with all due respect, if you can’t fathom the concept of someone using an online forum to help them compartmentalize their feelings so they don’t bring negativity into a professional space, you may not be as joyful and in touch with your emotions as you’d like to believe. Second, it is completely reasonable to dislike icebreakers in general, or to get tired of “learning” about the same people for twenty years in a row, or to just want more time for planning and room setup. My district is starting a new policy in the fall. Kids can have their phones on them, but not use them - not even during lunch. Teachers have a cell phone caddy where they put it in during class, although many students just hold onto them in their pocket. It's tough to police them when students say they don't have a phone yet it's in their jeans. Do you have a similar policy and has it worked? I just got hired to teach AP Calculus AB. The school trusts me with it because I was the long-term AP Calculus sub a few years ago and that went well. Also, sounds like no one else in their math department wants to touch it. School starts August 10th and I have no idea where to start. So I started a new job. Went through nursing orientation. They told us we were gonna have to take a math test, 20 questions and that you could only miss two. You get a retake. But if you miss more than two again, you’re fired. It’s part of their policy and if it’s nowhere in the contract. Has anyone encountered this? I think it’s absolutely bizarre.
