I’m not a well liked teacher

My second year of high school teaching and I’ve come to accept that I’m not a well liked teacher. No thank you cards, no little gifts. I don’t know how to be the strong teacher which is appreciated by students. I often wonder I’m if I’ve made a career mistake submitted by /u/itzzzzmileyyyy [link] [comments]

I see a lot of people who are a bit older wanna do nursing, why?

I’ve been seeing a lot of people asking if they can be a nurse at 40 and up. I was wondering why the career switch now? Did the job you had before not make much money, or do you think nursing will be easier? Just curious what people did before submitted by /u/Remarkable_Sale_4062 [link] [comments]

Can we talk about how insane teacher application portals are?

I'm in the middle of moving back to the U.S. from overseas and applying for teaching jobs, and I found a district application portal with 17 essay questions just to submit my application. Not "Tell us about yourself." I mean full-on educational and life philosophy prompts. "Describe the role relationships play in a classroom." "What role will classroom assessment play in instruction?" Buddy... I have three years in the classroom and a Master's in Special Education. I'll happily talk your ear off for forty-five minutes about relationship building, accommodations, assessment, IEPs, and differentiated instruction during an interview. But writing a term paper just to get my resume looked at? Come on, man. And then theirs licensing in another state. Retaking Praxis exams. State-specific licensure tests. Fingerprinting. Background checks. Official transcripts sent to multiple agencies. I have a licenses, yet I still have to prove to another state that I know what an IEP is because, apparentl

I want my students to take notes; their IEP says they don’t need to.

I TEACH my students how to take notes. I go over it extensively in class and even take notes”live notes” along with my students. I believe this is invaluable. But about half (yes HALF) of my students have an IEP that calls for me to share notes. I think this is bullshit by the way, especially if I am taking notes live in class myself. So what happens is that this half of students doesn’t feel the need to (rightfully so) to take notes. The other half just gets the notes from their friends who have the IEP. They don’t seem to understand that the note taking and the synthesis that goes with it IS the learning. So what do I do? Side note: we just seem to keep setting these kids up for failure. submitted by /u/AgeOfWorry0114 [link] [comments]

Pt asked me how many ppl I’ve seen die..

A youngish pt, with a potentially life threatening diagnosis, recently asked me how many people I’ve seen die. They were clearly asking from a place of personal fear, and I didn’t want to give a flip or joking answer, so I said something about how COVID was a blur and I don’t really know. But I’ve been thinking about that interaction, and the question, and I guess I’ve never really thought about it. I’m not sure I even accurately could guess to the nearest fifty or hundred 🤷‍♂️ I don’t really have a question, and this is certainly not a contest, it’s just the way they asked me that somehow is nagging me. I think they were envisioning me or one of my coworkers eventually bagging them up as they cool down. submitted by /u/Famous_Cheesecake666 [link] [comments]

Comparison of Medical- Surgical conditions between Ireland and US. (Ireland POV)

I am working here in Ireland for 4 years now and thinking of moving to US for a change of environment and higher wages. I just want to ask, what’s the state of medical surgical patients in the US? Staff ratio : The place that I work has 1:7 nurse to patient ratio. Doesn’t depend on acuity but actually on the room numbers. So 1-7, 8-14 and so on. Doesn’t matter if all the sick patients are in your care as long as it’s within your patient assignment. 12 hours shift. 37.5 hours/week. Staff pull out is at the highest. Our ward has 23 beds and 4 staff nurses if we’re lucky but most of the time there are only 3 nurses and 1 hca on the floor. Patients : Here in Ireland they have universal healthcare access, so every admission is free. The cons would be that the waiting times for admission and bed availability is so long that patients end up staying in the ED for a few days before getting admitted in the ward. If the ward is full, they will put you in a corridor. Also, if the patient is gettin

So tired of school supply debate this time of year EVERY year

Basically the title. What made me think if it and get irritated enough to post was a Gerry Brooks video outlining his own frustrations. There are three types of parents: I will buy NOTHING because the school should supply everything (but have nails done and the newest iPhone as well as the newest name brand clothing for kids). I actually get the point here, but the issue is that schools DON'T supply everything so some pencils, some paper, expo markers, and tissues would be appreciated (that is literally my list- those 4 things). I will put my child's name on EVERYTHING and refuse to allow ANY supplies to be communal. That's fine, but I'll be calling when those supplies run out for you to send more. Don't ask me to let your child share crayons from my communal supply. I just want my child to express him or herself (crazy folders, etc.). Listen Linda, teachers aren't trying to stifle your child. It's just easier if the red folders are for math and the blue for ELA. Feel free to get as cr

How to help teens with no number sense?

Hello! I am going into my 4th year teaching, but first year as a certified math teacher. I teach algebra and geometry at a low income school. I used the be a language support teacher in a math classroom, so I’m not going in with 0 experience, but would love advice. Language support was for an EL class with a lot of students coming to the US from outside countries for lots of reasons, but they often have huge difference in education which is what’s causing the gap I’m talking about below. (With that being said I have the best students in the world and would never change anything about it). In high school with higher level math, have a solid foundation in multiplication, division, even addition and subtraction, is SO important. Some teachers act as if calculators make up the difference, but I really feel like they don’t. Kids can’t be expected to figure out how to simplify a fraction or factor quadratics by just trying different combinations on a calculator. So my question is how have yo

Recently lost my mom. Anyone else change jobs afterwards?

I lost my mom recently after her Parkinson's/dementia had been progressing over the year. I work on a neuro floor.. Not sure if I'm just worrying too much, but now I'm thinking if I should change jobs because I don't want to have to be reminded of my moms illness when I'm working. I've had patients who reminded me of my mom in the condition they were in. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Should I just wait it out, maybe it'll get better as I heal and I won't feel a type of way? I enjoyed my job, I was happy to care for my patients and didn't feel a way despite going home and seeing my mom in a similar state. But now it's different.. honestly feels a bit depressing just thinking about it. Just cope with it and continue to separate my personal life from my work life right? I work nights and I am also starting to dread it too. Is going from 3 shifts to 5 days a week doable?? I just wanna feel normal again with a regular sleeping schedule, but I also enjoy my occasional 5-8 day

Fun Debate: What are your subject colors?

So I see this debate come up so often and it cracks me up every time. Everyone has a different color system for their subjects and we will defend our system till the day we retire. lol. What are your colors and what are some random reasons behind them. Here are mine: Red - History because of blood (wars). Orange - Science because of pumpkins. Yellow - Nothing because yellow pen and marker doesn't show up well. Green - Math because economics and money. Blue - English because of my tears (I'm dyslexic). Purple - Geography because it's my favorite subject. submitted by /u/Dry-Material-4230 [link] [comments]

How much are you bringing in a month after taxes?

I’m currently an LPN and I’m in school working toward my RN. Lately, balancing work and school has been really overwhelming. I truly enjoy being an LPN, and I know becoming an RN will open more doors for me, but I’ve been struggling with self-doubt and have even thought about taking a break from school. I guess I’m looking for some motivation from those of you who have already made it through. Was it worth pushing through the hard days? If you’re comfortable sharing, about how much do you take home each month after taxes as an RN (and what state/specialty do you work in)? I’m not becoming an RN just for the money! I genuinely love nursing …but I’d be lying if I said financial stability wasn’t a motivator too. I’m a single mom, and it helps to picture how my life could improve once I reach that goal. I’d really appreciate any advice, encouragement, or stories from your own journey. Thank you! submitted by /u/Appropriate_Bug6313 [link] [comments]

A little advice on a shocking situation…

I would like to get some advice on how to handle a situation…. For reference, I have ovarian cancer-without getting too deep into diagnosis- I taught January through May while starting chemotherapy. This week I will have surgery to finally remove the tumor and ovary. I work because I need the health insurance and bills have to be paid. The world doesn’t stop unfortunately and I don’t get familial financial support. A teacher at my school quit last minute. Administration approached me and asked me to take over her classes. I said no, my health is not stable enough for 4 different classroom curriculums. Especially after they completely changed how we have to write our lesson plans, so I have to redo my lesson plans from last year already. Today I checked skyward to do some ahead planning before my surgery on Friday and saw that they added the other teachers classes anyway. I’m genuinely in shock. The school I work at is under at will hiring procedures. So I’m unsure how to even deal with

SPED teachers: whats your favorite position?

After subbing for 6 months, I landed a SPED position at an Elementary School and will have 8 students grades 1-5 (Autism Level 2, self contained) Before I landed this gig, I subbed all types of classes across all grades - ID, Severe ID, Autism Level 1, Autism Level 2...K through 12! After doing middle and high school a few times, I realize theres LOTS of options! SPED teacher who travels across classrooms to collaborate with the main teacher, classes where half of the day is career development at different locations (PetSmart, local clubhouses to clean, etc) Those SPED teachers who have held at least 2 different positions - whats your favorite and why? As of now, I feel such a motherly feeling for the youngest students in SPED (36F, no biological children - fostered for 3 years). But, I dont know if its where I want to stay forever. Any experiences and stories would be a joy to hear. To those of you reading this who are also first-year SPED teachers ... congrats and good luck!! submitt

I am so incompetent on the floor it's genuinely ridiculous.

I feel like I see this kind of post all the time, but I'm halfway through second semester and I feel so behind all my clinical groupmates. My grades are pretty good and my clinical instructor evaluated me generously, but he's also super patient and nice. I've passed IVPB meds several times and I still can't do it without some intervention from my instructor/RN, but almost everyone else can do it effortlessly. I have so much trouble balancing my care plan, charting, med passes, and actual patient care. Even with the patient care, my soft skills just aren't where they need to be. I did peri-care on a patient and had to help them switch sides several times because I lost the clean diaper underneath them, and had to have a CNA help me out. I've studied how to do bed baths multiple times and asked CNAs in my cohort, but I'm still lacking in practice. I also feel like my clinical groupmates are able to forge such strong connections with their patients, while being on time for their charting.

I was laid off from my job at a Chicago Public School and I feel hopeless.

On Wednesday I lost my teaching job for Chicago Publics Schools, and I feel completely lost, hopeless, and uncertain about any attempt to continue to be a teacher. I was a high school English teacher for almost four years at a public school in the city. I really felt like my job was secure, and I was entering my tenure year, so I was feeling really good about my position and personal confidence. The last few years have been so incredibly challenging for me between managing student behavior, lack of support from admin, lack of funds, constantly needing to reinvent the wheel, burnout, and often feeling inadequate. This past year I really felt like I was starting to get my footing, and I was mentally preparing to start the 2026/2027 school year with a new mindset: I am doing the best that I can with what I am given, and I am going to do even better than the previous years. I was basically trying to convince myself that I can get through another year, and that every new teacher feels this

Charter School Take Over

This may be controversial, not sure how people on this thread feel about charters, but my principal came from a charter school which is fine, everyone starts somewhere BUT my issue with charter schools is the lack of educational background many teachers and staff have. In the past school year, there were several new hires throughout the year, and only one of them came from a non/charter background. My principal has really only hired teachers from charter backgrounds. It seems phishy to me… idk. I just don’t understand how a teacher from a charter school who isn’t licensed is more qualified than a licensed teacher who went to school for education? And now my school is filled with them. *EDIT* : you may disagree but I believe all charters are bad. Not all teachers in charters are bad, but I just can’t support them. And a lot of their teachers do lack experience, not all. When I say lack experience I’m not talking about years of teaching, I’m talking hours in the classroom, pedagogy, etc.

Punished on my VAM score for doing what the district asked

I received a Highly Effective evaluation from my principal last school year (25-26). I did everything I was asked to do, implemented the consultant-supported instructional framework. At first I was indignant about the extra work and the focus it pulled from core content instruction. Then I drank the kool aid. It was work way beyond the job description and it was the hardest year of my instructional career. I was recognized as a model classroom by my principal and district admins. After a restful summer I was ready to return to a really challenging turnaround school environment with the hope that is inspired by being validated in the quality of the work you do. Just found out my state level evaluation (based on my students’ data) is Unsatisfactory. I’ll likely be sent away to another school as a consequence. The irony is I won’t be replaced because no one wants to work at a school like mine. That’s how I got the job in the first place, replacing a certified teacher who wanted to be in t

Family called patient advocacy line on me

To start with, I work on a med surg floor that takes progressive care patients. I was assigned 3 fairly sick and busy progressive and one general care patient. From 7:30-10 AM today, the wife of my general care patient called the nurses station twice asking for an update from the nurse. I was obviously busy doing meds/assessments and my coworker related such and told her I would call back. She was rude to my coworker about it but I literally had my hands full and could not come to the phone. Around 10, I’m all caught up and get to sit down, the phone rings and I pick up, it’s the patients daughter now. I give her the update and while I’m speaking to her, the wife calls AGAIN. When I’m done talking about patient, I ask her if she can pass along this update to the wife who has called multiple times, and in the future if just one of them could call because I’m busy working with my patients during my shift. So my hospital will pay entirely for my RN to BSN program. Which is completely online. It will take between 12-16 months. Advice on changing from a just pass them school to a high achieving school.

Good evening everyone, I'm a high school math teacher with five years experience, three of those as department leader. I've been at a low performing school where admin's only concern is the graduation rate, so there's no attendance policy, no cell phone policy, we're not allowed to have deadlines on anything, 50% minimum on everything even if they do nothing, and we're strongly encouraged not to assign homework because it becomes our fault when they don't do it and they don't pass. As soon as spring break was done, teachers would start getting told to create worksheet packets for students to take home and bring back so you could give them a passing grade. When I could get students to pay attention, they'd talk about how they understood the way I explained things, but I spent most of the time trying to convince them to care about their education and to pay attention. Now I'm getting the opportunity to teach at a high performing school and I know things are going to be different. I'm con

Pharmacy mistakes

I work in outpatient oncology. Our pharmacy frequently makes mistakes on chemo/immunotherapy drugs. For example, today they sent my drug out mixed in a 100ml bag instead of a 250ml bag. The medication label on the bag stated it was 260ml to be infused over 1 hour. So if I hadn’t noticed the error, I would have programmed the drug according to the pharmacy label and it would have infused in 20 minutes instead of an hour because the volume was incorrect. This is not the first or second or third time this has happened. I’ve reported it on an incident report each time and nothing happens. Who can I report this to? The dystopian future is now.

TL;DR: A private school charging about $40,000 per year is opening in Edmond, Oklahoma this August that replaces most traditional classroom instruction with AI-powered learning software . Students spend roughly 2 hours a day on core academics using AI, while the rest of the day focuses on projects, life skills, entrepreneurship, and other enrichment with adult guides instead of traditional teachers. The school claims students learn up to twice as fast , but that claim has not yet been independently verified. While headlines say the school has “no teachers,” adults are still present to coach, supervise, and support students—they simply aren’t delivering most academic instruction. https://oklahomawatch.org/2026/07/21/a-40000-per-year-ai-school-with-no-teachers-is-opening-in-oklahoma-this-august/ submitted by /u/grannyknickersniffer [link] [comments]

Egos (and sloppiness) in the ED

From brand new, fresh outta high school techs trying to micromanage the nurses to grizzled middle-aged RNs trying to tell me he and his 25 year old protégé could've handled a belligerent patient better than I did, I'm already sick of the egos in the ED. Is it like this everywhere? I was excited about working in a team but was not expecting to work with the corniest people on the planet. Working med surg was terrible but at least my coworkers were chill. In ED I can't even talk to someone about how the norepi drip they handed off to me was underdosed and mis-documented without being completely brushed off with a DGAF/"the ED is the Wild West" attitude. Why's everyone think they are too cool for school down here. Please throw out your trash, we didn't even code anyone in this room. Returning to previous school - Need a snarky funny come back

I'm returning to a school where I worked for 6½ years before leaving 4 years ago to take a higher-paying job in another school. Unfortunately, that decision didn't work out the way I hoped. I've worked at two different schools over the past four years, and each year has brought difficult experiences. I've been unhappy ever since I left. Now I'm returning to the school I loved, but in a new role. I've told a few people, but not everyone knows yet. I'm looking for a funny, slightly snarky response for when people ask why I came back. Some of the people that will ask are just looking for gossip, and I don't feel like sharing everything I've been through. I am not good at thinking in the moment. I have been in the same school district the entire time. I was a higher ranked school. submitted by /u/Skittle_13 [link] [comments]

Hating my new job

Title pretty much sums it up. I left LTC to work at a doctors office/clinic and figured I would love it. The job itself? Great. The workload and schedule? So much better. I work with two other nurses, who are also new to the job but a couple weeks ahead of me. It seems like I’m just making mistake after mistake. Little things that just add up. I’m not exactly amazing at drawing blood/labs either considering I just didn’t do it a lot at my last job, which is a whole problem in itself. These girls are so frustrated with me when I’m truly trying my best. I’ve noticed it in the tones of voice when speaking to me and how they act around me vs each other. This will be my 5th year teaching in a couple weeks, and I’ve made a lot of changes over the years to improve my teaching, but this year I’m gonna go for something really big. No Chromebooks allowed on the desks during notes (open or closed) they have to be done on paper, no Chromebooks allowed during pretty much any activity aside from webquests and specific stuff where they need it. They technically have to open their chromebook to make a bathroom pass BUT NO! I will manually make one for them if they raise their hand. I teach 12th grade and even though I seat students in groups and encourage discussion in activities I have witnessed them just using ai and technology to crutch their way past meaningful learning. My principal just emailed me and said she’d send me to a training about implementing AI in the classrooms and schools because I am one of the most anti-AI teachers in the school. I genuinely am so annoyed because while I can see and speak to others of benefits of AI, at present the benefits don’t outweigh the disadvantages. I hate that people have gone in the direction of ‘it’s the future, it has a place in education’. Why? Why would it hold space when education could not continue when the earth is gone? submitted by /u/lemmegetamickpicktwo [link] [comments]

Would you take a 37.5% pay raise for a more stressful outpatient nursing job?

I’m a 25-year-old RN trying to decide between staying at my current job or accepting a higher-paying position. Current job: •Outpatient endoscopy center •$40/hour •Monday-Friday. Usually working 6 AM-2 PM (sometimes get off earlier if the schedule is light) •I know my team well, and the workflow is very predictable. •Low stress overall and I have plenty of energy after work to go to the gym, spend time with my spouse, cook, and enjoy my hobbies •3% yearly raises New job: •$55/hour •Also outpatient •4 10 hr shifts or 5 8's depending on what is needed •Would rotate between three different clinics: -One is about 10 minutes away -One is about 30 minutes away -One is about an hour away •I’d be expected to float wherever I’m needed (PACU, circulating, or other roles depending on staffing) •Less consistency since I wouldn’t know exactly where I’d be working or what role I’d be in every day The pay increase is obviously huge, about a 37.5% raise, but I’m worried about trading a really good wor

NY officials propose mandatory science of reading update for teacher prep programs

Read the Article Here - Alex Zimmerman of Chalkbeat. I encourage you to read the article, it'll take 3 minutes, I promise! But life is busy so here are my sparknotes because I know how people, even teachers, on the internet can be: - The [NY State's] framework emphasizes [...] phonics, the relationship between sounds and letters, [and] phonological awareness, oral language, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. - This comes after reports that NY teacher-education programs have failed to properly train educators in reading instruction. - Carves out specific language to include instructional techniques for those with disabilities or reading challenges like dyslexia. - New York's 4th graders scored 10% worse than they did a decade prior, with ~40% at the lowest possible reading score/level. - 2028 rollout if adopted. - Criticism: Some wonder how this might be enforced, given the 7 year teacher prep program review cycle. Some state officials propose disallowing a prep program's recertifi

I saw a few city based subreddits with this thread going around. Thought I would do one for nurses. I am based in the US so that's where I set this thread but it would be interesting to see other countries start one up. I am currently unemployed (another source of the inspiration, lol) so I will share my old position! Base Hourly: 43/hr Differential(s): Main Campus +1/hr Location: Houston, TX Setting: Outpatient Specialty Clinic Degree/License: BSN/RN Years of Experience: 8 Union Status: No Anything else we should add? Nurses, what reoccurring dreams do you have about work?

Dreams/nightmares that I have often involves me getting to work late, spending my whole night doing nothing then realizing it at the end of my shift, and not having my report sheet done at all. What are yours? submitted by /u/sonnnzzz [link] [comments]

My patient bit through the IV tubing.

Patient last night was in psychosis. Could not redirect to save my life. They were convinced I was holding them hostage in my apartment and I was a murderer who ate babies. (All the nurses taking care of this person held this role.) Meds barely touched them. Dex drip, Q4hr dropirodol, zyprexa. Near the start of shift I noticed HR in low 100s and RR at 28. Went to check and the IV tubing looks like this. They had bitten clean through it. Luckily it was just the primary infusion and not the actual IV. Pt was restrained and it was going into a midline in the upper arm. Honestly, I was pretty impressed. Had to take a picture because it was just too much. Later they managed to get a restraint off with their teeth. Legit impressed, even though it was a very tiring and frustrating shift. submitted by /u/yolacowgirl [link] [comments]

Job offer comparisons

I need a new job bad. My current job is draining the life out of me. I am living in Los Angeles right now but have previously lived in Asheville, NC and miss the seasons, green space, ability to have a backyard and garden, and a few friends. I am also interested in learning a new specialty (endoscopy). However, I have another potential offer in San Diego at an eye surgery center I have worked per diem shifts at. It is a small team and is more limited in terms of what types of procedures they do (mostly cataracts/blephs), but obviously higher base pay. I know the base pay might seem like the obvious decider, but I am also considering COL in each location, the value of getting trained in endoscopy, and the bonuses at the NC job. I’m interested in hearing all thoughts and opinions! submitted by /u/ASongofRiceandFire [link] [comments]

Low enrollment leads to lay-off

So, in May about 3 weeks before school ended I was informed that my position as a Middle School Social Studies teacher was being eliminated due to low student enrollment. I have had one interview since then, and have applied to a grand total of 6-8 jobs since then, which are literally all the openings that I have found across multiple platforms and I am terrified that my career is screwed. A bit of history, I graduated in 2020 and found my first position in 2021 after schools figured out how to handle COVID a bit better. I found my first job working as a Special Education parapro for a charter school, which quickly turned into me being the Special Education teacher on a long term sub permit working toward certification. I met my now fiancé and left that job after 2 years, worked for another charter school nearby that was miserable. I left after one year, and finally found a Social Studies position at *another* charter school. I had already begun to feel like me working at charters was

Does anyone else use their lunch break for hobbies instead of socializing?

Hi there! I've been thinking about this lately. I'm a teacher (a new mom) and when I go back to work, I'm considering making my lunch break (and maybe even one of my recesses when possible) my dedicated "me time." Instead of spending every lunch in the staff room laughing and socializing. I'd love to sit (in my classroom) somewhere quiet with my headphones, watch part of a comfort show, and decorate in my happy planner. Planning has become a creative hobby for me—decorating pages with stickers, washi tape, writing little memories, etc. It's something that genuinely helps me relax. Part of me wonders if I'd feel guilty taking that time for myself, but another part thinks it might actually make me a happier, more refreshed teacher for the afternoon. Do any of you intentionally protect your lunch break for yourself... For your personal hobbies If so, what do you do? * Read? * Journal? * Knit or crochet? * Work in a planner? * Watch a show? * Sit in silence? * Something else? Has having

Writing on IV bags

Recently our manager has told us we can no longer write directly on IV bags because the ink can potentially seep through into the fluid. Its not a big deal at all to label with a sticker instead but this is the first that me or my coworkers have ever heard of this. For reference I work in the OR and we sometimes put meds into bags of irrigation for use during scope cases. Anybody have any policies on this at your work? Every OR I've ever worked in has done this so it was just curious to me. submitted by /u/alyolios [link] [comments]

What badge reels are you all using?

Also anyone have any suggestions for a badge reel that will last longer than a pay period and won’t randomly explode while trying to swipe into the med room? (Pic related) submitted by /u/Camurai_ [link] [comments]

I hate nursing

Most days I dream about quitting and throwing my license in the garbage. I just want to be happy. I’ve been doing this for 5 years started at 20 now 25. I’ve never felt so exhausted and burnt out in my entire life. The pay is garbage in this economy for the amount of BS you have to put up with. Management is useless and never helpful. Constantly having to anticipate whether you’re gonna get physically or verbally assaulted before each shift. If I could go back and talk to my 18yr old self I would scream to never join this godforsaken field :/ I wish I had an ounce of energy to even look into another career I hate this :( submitted by /u/Jaded_Grape5271 [link] [comments]
