I’ve been an RN for 13 years and I’ve been nursing a work-related lumbar strain for the last two years. I thought I loved bedside nursing in the ICU/PCU/tele unit but lately I’ve realized I need to step away from it. Recently posted in a different sub about how I know it to be true that there is a literacy crisis because my 7th grade students cannot read. I didn’t post the data from my school/county/state because when I talk to other educators, it’s a given we all know to be true AND we all spend so much gosh darn time in “data chats”. I hate purewicks. I hate them so much. At my hospital it’s a nursing measure so far, no physician order needed, and it’s gone too far. Everyone has a damn purewick regardless of continence. I work at night, so it’s this messed up reverse situation where patients have them all day and are annoyed they have to get up at night. I’ll take them off of continent patients when I come in, right back on as soon as the next nurse comes in. I’m sorry, it’s ridiculous to do this for either our convenience or the patient’s. I believe in use it or lose it in regards to both mobility and urinary continence. Bathroom trips are the majority of these people’s mobility. I also believe they straight up cause more skin break down than just check and changing on truly incontinent patients. IMO purewicks should only be indicated for -measuring output on incontinent patients -preexisting skin breakdown for incontinent patients -non weight bearing status Also, not a real argument, but I hate the rattling sound
I have an opportunity to run a home health branch of a new nursing company. It… I’ve never done home health. Only LTC/rehab, clinics and the hospital. I’m thinking of turning it down, as I am currently a nursing home rehab Unit Manager and I love it most of the time. I’m on my 6th job since 2025, when I went from LPN to RN. I guess I needed to vent a little. Is 6 jobs a lot for that time frame? Anybody else out there struggling to turn off the need to be productive/busy all summer long? This isn’t a flex.. I genuinely wish I could just unwind, relax, couch rot, binge watch Netflix all summer long. But so far it’s 5 weeks into summer and I haven’t had one singular day of rest. I didn’t teach summer school but I’ve done about 100 hours of contract work for some projects I’m doing for my school district. Once I finished that I immediately moved on to tackling house projects, diy, decluttering. Plus I started going to the gym every morning.. and entertaining my own kid too. I keep thinking I should just relax and take it easy before the insanity of the school year starts over again.. but it’s like I’m stuck in this mode that I constantly have to be doing something, and usually it has to be something that I deem productive or money making. I am dreading my moms voice in my head over and over “you should’ve went into nursing”… Instead I choose an Education degree. I am currently on summer break and I am having so much anxiety right now about having to go back to work in September. The waking up at 6am to coach, teach to 70+ kids a day (I teach Phys. Ed and because of increased class sizes and no classroom caps, I am stuck being the only teacher with this many kids). The demands for student care inside, outside, and around the community is becoming more demanding. I just cannot keep up and I am in my third year of teaching. My concern is really money and time. I work at a large community clinic and our medication management agreement explicitly forbade using marijuana (even medical marijuana), alcohol, and illegal drugs if we prescribe you any narcotic substance. Enforcement has been varied, but I have definitely talked with some old ladies on the phone sobbing that their friend gave them a CBD gummy and, even though it helped them cut their Norco usage in half, they swear they'll never do it again! I serve on the ethics committee as the nurse rep with a bunch of docs and senior execs. From a harm reduction perspective I was able to get them to vote to strike the language. I thought I had won! No! It took months of hounding our forms committee to actually change the language in the contract. But it just went through last week! I was shopping at Home Depot today and the fire alarm went off. It didn't even register, I just figured it was one of the forklifts beeping. I even said to my partner "wow that forklift must be right in the next aisle it's so loud" as I continued to shop until a woman ran up yelling that this wasn't a drill. a huge reason I have not gotten serious about my transition/come out in all my social circles is because I am scared to come out at work :,) I live in Appalachia, I have enough coworkers who are progressive and very kind, but it’s just so scary to me and I barely know any LGBT nurses, let alone someone in my boat who I can actually talk to about it (don’t really want to breach it with a coworker first lol). Our summer K-3 students went on a field trip to the science museum today. As we’re looking at sea lions in the local ecology exhibit, one of my second graders turns around to see three women dressed in black burqas. This student whips back around to me and says, quite loudly, “TEACHER MAR, WHY ARE THERE BLACK PEOPLE” Obviously I freeze in shock/horror and apologize. Luckily, the women thought it was hilarious. Doctor here. Genuine question for the people who actually run the wards and homes. Watching staff build the same collection of bits from scratch for the tenth time in a shift (the same gloves,wipes,pads,bags pilgrimage around the store room) makes me think the pack manufacturers have never actually watched anyone work. Blank slate: if you could have any situation turned into a ready made grab and go pack, what would it be? The job where you're always hunting the same items. The 3am task where half of what you need is in a locked cupboard. The thing you do rarely enough that nobody remembers where everything is, but urgently enough that it matters. And the follow-up: what would it need to contain to be actually right, not manufacturer right? I need feel like patients are just so ever reliant on nurses and want us to just do everything for them, even the simplest of things. I helped a patient with her food menu and listed the choices Her: what would you choose nurse Me: well it’s your menu so it’s your choice Her: well what would you pick Me: I’d eat any of it so it’s your choice Her: oh you just fill it in for me and put anything down. Then rolled over and went to sleep But why? Just choose what you want 😭 why do I have to choose your meals or just guess what you like. Then typically the food came and she was like I would have never ordered beef I haven’t eaten red meat in years. AHHHHHHH why didn’t you say that It happens with clothes. You help someone to dress and you ask them what they want to wear and they want us to decide for them. I think it’s widely known by almost everyone that the first year of teaching is very hard. It doesn’t magically get easy afterward, but from what I’ve seen, the first year is uniquely challenging. The folks who don’t know this include a lot ot prospective and current first year teachers, many of whom are wondering why they’re struggling, if they’re not good enough, and whether they’ll make it. I think it could be helpful to hear from those who made it through that first year. Whether you just finished it or went through it 30 years ago, I know you have stories. I've seen nurses on Instagram and youtube from i believe USA who take their scrubs home with them. I, as someone who works in elderly care in sweden, could get fired if I'd take the scrubs home with me because of hygiene. Same for my parents, who are both nurses. So my question is, do you have your personal scrubs in other countries? I work as a bike coach for kids (mostly ages 6-12), and there are these two siblings (10 and 12) that have been giving me a weird feeling. I'm not trying to diagnose them or say every strict religious family is a cult or anything, but some of the stuff they've said has me wondering if they're from some really high-control religious group. The first thing that caught me off guard was they told me they have 12 siblings. One of them mentioned he was about to become an uncle, so I asked how old the sibling having the baby was. They both said 45. Then I asked how old their mom was and they said 57, and their dad was 68. So for summer school, they gave us a STEAM curriculum instead of an ELA one, and while I'm upset because they didn't give us any real training or direction yet expect us to follow it with 'fidelity,' and they gave us no real paid planning time to understand the curriculum, I am appreciating how engaged the kids seem to be while building things. My summer admin gave half my supplies for one of the projects to another teacher, so instead I brought in legos and the kids are having fun using them to build their project. I forgot how cool legos were, and also how creative kids can be while building stuff. I just celebrated my one year of being a nurse. It's been mostly fine. Stressful, but it's a living and I like my job enough. The team is good. I'm in my preferred specialty. I feel well supported, blah blah. But as an introvert I HATE THE NURSES STATION. Everyone walks up to say hi (EVS, dietary, providers, social work, literally everyone you could think of). I hear every call bell. I hear the secretary and other nurses typing. I hear the printer. I hear every phone call the secretary takes. I love talking to others so I get sucked into conversations, but I since I'm an introvert that depletes my social energy. It takes just as much energy to lock in and ignore conversations. I feel hypervigilant at the nurses station. If I have downtime (it's not every day but I work in mother baby and sometimes census is low), I feel like it's unacceptable to do anything other than scroll on my phone or talk to someone. I gave 10 years to Baldi Middle School. I attended Baldi as a student, returned there as a teacher, helped build programs, raised a lot of funding ($500,000+), and worked hard to support students and the school community. When the new principal came in, things changed. Over time, responsibilities I had built and carried were taken away (sometimes without my knowledge), I was removed from spaces and programs I helped create, and I experienced a pattern of exclusion that I believe was unfair and unprofessional. Then I was told to move all my stuff into a moldy closet, which was now going to be my office. This year, all three art teachers were initially marked for forced transfer. The most senior teacher remained. I had the next highest seniority. The least senior teacher ultimately received the CTE Commercial Arts position. I tried to pursue that position the right way. I hold Art K-12 certification, Technology K-12 certification, and have more than 20 years of private-sector experience
I work in a 300 bed level 2 trauma hospital. My department is called vascular access team, other nurses call us "IV team" "PICC team" "ultrasound IV nurse," etc. I've been doing it for close to 5 years and worked in VAT at different hospitals. Total 11 years of nursing including med/surg, ER, outpatient. I was so excited and felt so cool when I first started this specialty. Now I'm just always irritated and tired when I'm at work. They staff exactly one VAT nurse per day at my hospital. But we cover all of inpatient, outpatient CT&MRI, and also do scheduled outpatient PICCs. Supposedly our main duty is picc&midline insertion and help with difficult PIVs requiring ultrasound guidance only if we're free. But most of the time the PIVs are what makes my day so hectic and half of the time they're easy sticks that an average inpatient nurse should be able to get. I'm tired of going back and forth with providers and nurses asking for renal consult for CKD/ESRD patients before placing a picc.
I’ve been a nurse for 25 years. I’ve been going through the worst of the worst of my life and I’ve lost 20 pounds. Somebody reported that they thought I was on drugs so they pulled me off the floor took me to HR and drug tested me. I totally was humiliated. At first I was thinking they’re not gonna find anything but then I remembered I had had two kava shots the night before. Then when I googled it, it had not had any Kratom listed, but it said that it was a synthetic Kratom stupid me. I’m wondering if I could get fired for having Kratom in my system? Not that I was drinking them at work or anything. Not that I have any drugs in my system, but I have proof that there is nothing listed on there. Anyone have experience with this? Has anyone ever had students that literally tried to ruin your life? I had a handful of students that ganged up together to attack and take revenge on some students and me. I am talking about hacking and defamation and full cyber crime. These students would try to hunt anything they can find to put you in trouble legally or put you on social media etc. These were high school students and it completely threw me off teaching. This fall will be year 10 for me teaching high school social studies, specifically Government and AP Human Geography. Every single year I have completely new ideas I want to try, or small tweaks I want to make to materials I used last year. And I always think “YES this year will be IT” And then inevitably, I learn something new, something doesn’t quite go as smoothly as I predicted, I make a mental note for next year, then rinse and repeat. Every single year lol. Every year I think I become even better. So my question is, is there ever a time when you’ve reached the “end”? Like the max good teacher level? Reaching the final level of being a good teacher? Beating the last boss, if you will? Or is this just one long journey of continual improvement? I think I am a good teacher. Next year we aren't able to access TPT while on school wifi. So, anything we want from TPT we need to find at home and download for printing at school later. I'm bummed out. There have been many times where TPT has saved me in a pinch on rainy days, or when I thought I had enough prepped, but my kids flew through everything quickly. Instead of throwing them on Chromebooks or taking toys out, I'd grab some supplemental practice stuff from TPT and send it to the printer. Hello all, I’m a day shifter on step down. I’m not sure how yalls unit works but on mine it’s an ongoing crisis of meds not being given and then your whole display is full of big RED marks saying OVERDUE and they never fall off unless you document on it. I’ve noticed a lot of nurses chart, “Not given previous shift”. I hate the clutter but I get worried that it could open you up to some sort of liability should something horrible happen. Ex. Pt didn’t receive Keppra over night you charted “not given previous shift” and then the pt has a seizure, could that open you up to scrutiny like, “why didn’t you notify the provider”, “you recognized the med wasn’t given why didn’t you escalate this”. Same thing charting on Abx, pt gets sepsis, so many examples. Also a med could be given but not scanned it happens, if I don’t know with 100% certainty that it was given or not I can’t assign my name to that charting. You could chart like MD notified and such but that would take forever and probably
For anyone wondering how the strike at BWH is going, despite admin saying the hospital is running “business as usual”, that is most certainly not the case! Only 1,300 scab nurses hired to cover 4,000 nurses. Doesn’t sound like business as usual to me! Reports of med errors, nurses not knowing what care is involved for our specialized patients, not having access to charts or medications until a few hours into their shift, all awful stuff. Not allowing the staff nurses to walk off their units the morning of the strike for a few hours in units like the NICU due to MGB not adequately preparing for the strike. Last night, *allegedly* someone in need was outside the ER and requiring medical assistance, yet none of the these “qualified” scab nurses came out to help. I've been experimenting with simple, low-prep ways to help younger children remember the order of the planets. One activity that worked better than I expected was cutting out paper circles in different sizes and colors to represent each planet. Students arranged them in order from the Sun while saying the names aloud. Turning it into a hands-on activity seemed to help much more than having them memorize a list. For those of you teaching elementary science, what simple activities have been the most effective for helping students remember the planets? I got hired in a new ICU in March and they only asked for my BLS and told them my ACLS is expired and they told me I can do it through them. I have been working for months and completely spaced it myself because I had a shit show orientation for 3 months (normal for this ICU even with experience) and was debating on quitting the whole time from the anxiety. I’m so sad. My colleague had 10 more students take the test and 84% pass rate. The biggest difference was that he has all day seniors and I had morning students. I had 28 take the test. Not one score of a 5. I feel like resigning. I’ve been teaching for 10 years and I’ve never felt such total failure. I’m so ashamed. I know people at school will gossip.
