"Professional Development"

I am a 10th year teacher in michigan and am attending a mandatory PD. I honestly have to say that sometimes PDs make me worried about the quality of our education system more than anything else does. The keynote speaker spent an hour telling the room the secret to teaching is apparently just being nice while she repeatedly climbed up and down tables. Like the overall theme was. If a kid or parent is being rude, its probably from some underlying reason and you can connect about that and help build the relationship sometimes, and sometimes it won't. Like duh...are there really teachers, who actually believe they are good teachers, that dont understand that... Apparently cuz so many people after are like. "Wow so inspiring" "That was great" "Learned a lot". What?!? Edited to clarify about the table...she didn't tell us to directly climb on tables. But movement was emphasized in her intro video (because I definitely need a 5 minute promo to introduce the speaker before the mc comes out to

A student assaulted me last year and now I have tonic clonic seizures

In March last year a student assaulted me when he couldn’t get to his target student who had already run away from the scene. He bashed my head into the door several times. Now I’ve begun having seizures. Major, full body convulsions and foaming at the mouth. I have 2-4 a week. We are two weeks into the year and this morning marks three times I’ve been sent home due to my seizures. I’ve already got intermittent FMLA coverage, but I’m realizing very quickly I may not be able to teach unless these are gotten under control. Yes, I have a medical team working on it. No, we don’t have answers yet. Health-wise, I probably need a break, however bills won’t pay themselves. And if I quit? No health insurance. I don’t think I qualify for disability. I don’t know what to do. I know that I’m struggling and I’m not capable of half of what I used to do. To be honest, I’m not sure why I’m posting, other than hoping someone has advice. I feel like I’m drowning. If you even have a spark of hope to shar

Solution to chronic absenteeism: Detroit Schools to Continue $100 Weekly Perfect Attendance Payments, Add $50 for Middle Schoolers

Detroit Public Schools Community District is expanding an attendance incentive that officials say helped improve turnout among high school students. Students in grades 6 through 8 can earn $50 for each week of perfect attendance, while high school students can still earn $100 a week. The expansion comes as chronic absenteeism remains widespread. In 2024-25, 61% of district students missed at least 10% of the school year. There will also be a new ride-share pilot program. The $500,000 rideshare pilot will provide trips to about 150 students at Pershing, Denby, Osborn and East English Village high schools from Aug. 24 through mid-October. A separate $1 million state grant will keep DDOT bus rides free for all Detroit K-12 students. https://themetrodetroitnews.com/detroit-schools-to-continue-100-weekly-perfect-attendance-payments-add-50-for-middle-schoolers/ * * I wish that this existed when I was in school! My reward for strong classroom management is all the toughest kids in one class

This year my school is introducing a study hall/elective period so that students can be pulled for additional services. This would be great if it wasn’t for the fact that theres no plan for students who don’t receive services they just split them up amongst the gen ed teachers. It’s clear admin realized this would be a problem because they obviously put the experienced teachers with students with behavior concerns. now I’m stuck with 15 middle school boys counting every minute until dismissal Pray for me ya’ll submitted by /u/Salty-Beginning-7727 [link] [comments]

How to deal with a principal who hates you

I brought my students out for a basketball competition a month ago. During the match, two of the students who weren't playing got into a fight. One of the boys punched the other boy in the face and his nose bled. My colleague (an untrained teacher) administered medical aid on the boy by using an ice pack on his face to reduce the swelling. I spoke to the assailant to investigate and find out his reasons for punching the other kid. After this incident happened, my principal scolded me for not keeping an eye on the students. She felt that it was my fault that the fight happened and I must have been negligent. She also scolded me for allowing an untrained teacher to administer medical aid on the student. She said that only trained teachers are allowed to do it. This is absurd in my opinion as any adult should be allowed to render medical aid to a student when they are injured or when there is an emergency. She banned me from going out with the students for future matches. Ever since this

Teachers with a Master’s: How did you do it?

Hi teachers, I’m still working toward a bachelor's degree and was wondering how realistic it is to work full-time, pay bills and rent, and earn a master's degree in education or a related field. For those who earned their Master’s while teaching full time, or any other jobs: How much did your degree end up costing? How did you afford it while paying rent and other living expenses? How long did it take you? How stressful was it, and what happened to your social life? Looking back at your experience, did you wish to change anything? I would really appreciate hearing your experiences!!! submitted by /u/CarefulGarlic3052 [link] [comments]

I’m absolutely dreading first week PD ice breakers due to personal loss over the summer.

We suffered an unexpected, heartbreaking loss in our family in August, and the thought of having to play juvenile ice breaker games on the first day of school next week is giving me anxiety and preemptive anger. It takes every ounce of fortitude to even get out of bed in the morning. I absolutely do not want to play two truths and a lie with my “elbow parter” about summer vacation or go “find someone I don’t know” and play 20 questions about the highlight of my summer. I don’t want to do any of that pollyanna nonsense right now, and I also feel like I shouldn’t be compelled to share WHY I don’t want to do it. These games are predicated on everyone being cheerful and happy-go-lucky, and I am currently anything but those things right now. Tracking every individualized plan

I’m a middle school teacher. I have 165 students. 9 students have health plans. 18 students have 504 Plans. 7 students have IEPs. I read every individualized plan before school started. I knew I had three students with Type 1 Diabetes. But I’m still trying to learn which kid has what plan while I learn their 165 names. Today I asked a student to silence their watch who was getting blood sugar alerts. Mom is rightfully pissed. Who has figured it out? What’s your system for connecting these critical plans to your students? How do you get your brain to process, connect, retain, and recall all of this? Did I start off too nice?

First year teacher here teaching 9th grade. I have 30-35 students per section. It’s the second week of school. I have been counting down to get them to quiet down. It’s been working but I have to do it often, and in one class I had them give me 5 minutes of silence at the end of class because it wasn’t working. Another period is getting a seating chart tomorrow due to specific students. One of the teachers told me that her student said I was very nice. Overall, ive been getting good engagement. They raise their hands, ask questions etc. However I have that feeling in the back of my head, like I don’t have control of the class. My admin is very strict and comes in sometimes. I’m always worried they’ll come in and I won’t have control of the class. Is the feeling normal or am I starting off too nice? Students can't do pen-and-paper math anymore...

Is anyone else noticing how their students completely fall apart when trying to do math on pen-and-paper? Each year when I get a new class, it seems like a pencil is more and more foreign in their hands. I'm a teacher who has always believed pen-and-paper was the best way to learn math, so I tend to stay away from a lot of the math sites like Khan Academy, unlike most other teachers at my school. Students repeat my redirections after me

I had this issue last year, and it seems like it’s going to be a problem again with this new group of students. Many times throughout the day, when I correct a student’s behavior, I get a chorus of students repeating after me. It doesn’t matter if it’s something simple like tying their shoes or a reprimand for interrupting me or leaning back in their chairs. A few times per class period, I'll have a chorus of students repeating after me. "Yeah Jimmy, tie your shoes!" "Oh my God Jimmy, tie your shoes!" "Jimmyyyyy, tie your shoessss!" Obviously, this reduces the likelihood of the original student complying because students don’t want to listen to their peers. It also turns into me having to reprimand the students who are repeating after me, so suddenly one redirection has multiplied into several. It’s exhausting. Last year, it got pretty severe. I ended up doing seat changes, behavior essays, lunch detentions, and parent phone calls, all with varying levels of success. Does anyone have a

Failing A Class Can Be An Important Lesson

I'm so tired of administrators presenting videos of educational advocates who declare failure untenable in education. I've had enough of Rick Wormeli telling me I need to give students unlimited retakes on a test. His idea is that kids need to try until they are able to pass, It's not an insane idea in some situations. A lot of kids do need multiple tries at something. However, it seems to be that multiple tries ends up being unlimited tries and the ability to redo something until you find the answers through process of elimination. It's also used to bully teachers into passing kids. Lastly, it discourages kids from really putting in effort. Kids learn over time they don't have to try because they can just do it again. Failure can be a good thing. I've failed in different situations. It's painful and embarrassing, but it taught me something. I sucked at writing going into college. However, through failing essay grades and a lot of effort, I improved. I had to learn something to pass, a

Middle school student shared that his mother teaches discriminatory behavior; how to handle if at all

6th grade science. First year teacher. Male. I’m very good with the whole social aspect of the kids and the year’s going very well so far. One of my students, when we were finishing up class and just having casual conversation about food and life as a class, raised hand to say “My mom tells us not to get Starbucks because they support gay people.” I immediately and calmly shut that down, explaining that “that’s a personal and private topic for home that we don’t address in science class. Okay?” and he nodded and clearly appeared nervous and unsure if he was comfortable about what he said. The rest of the class heard it all. It was over and done as quick as that. I’m wondering 1) If I should’ve explained more saying something like “We do not support discrimination of any people; we support and respect everyone” and 2) I’m just wondering, in terms of the parent, and if for any reason I’d ever meet her (parent conference, open house, etc.) am I supposed to bring this up to explain that th

Feminine Hygiene Supplies in HS

Male middle school teacher transitioning to high school (albeit only 9th) this year. In the past, I've always kept feminine hygiene supplies in my class, freely and discretely available to students in an accessible location. I point it out week 1 when we're going over where everything is in the classroom, and then that's that - it sticks with students (or sticks with some, who remind others, whatever the case) and gets used plenty from when I go to restock. Figure it's an awkward age and all that. That all said, is that still something to do in HS? I mean, obviously periods still happen, but I imagine students are more accustomed to it, have easier access to whatever they need elsewhere, and all that. I know it can't really hurt, but also being a guy, always want to be extra careful about anything that can be misconstrued. submitted by /u/Dassine [link] [comments]

Pulled From My Classroom, Accused of Cheating, Then “Invited Back” — What Are My Options Now?

I’m a state‑testing grade teacher, and at the end of this school year my grade level was accused of cheating on our state test — after I followed instructions directly from my principal. I’ve never been properly trained on the do’s and don’ts of administering the test, so I relied entirely on the guidance given to me by administration. In the middle of the school day, without warning, the other two teachers and I were pulled from our classrooms and told to report to the office. Once in the office, I was scolded, yelled at, had words put in my mouth, and accused of things I did not do. I wasn’t given any opportunity to explain my side or clarify that I had followed the instructions I was given. We were told we would be placed on administrative leave and that the district would be pushing for termination unless we resigned. We weren’t allowed to speak to our students, which left them confused and worried. (As leaving without a proper goodbye was very out of the norm for me) Meanwhile , t

New/young teachers: A healthy social life is impenative to maintain sanity

I learned this the hard way many years ago and it nearly drove me out of the profession. I once had a real bad year and I doubled and tripled down on trying to fix it by spending countless hours after school trying to make engaging lessons and get all my classes to be perfect with no issue. The result was I was so tense and on edge during the school day because my whole life had revolved around the way the kids acted. I was neglecting my friends and my hobbies and put all my eggs in the teaching basket. I was miserable because the thing I was putting all this energy into wasn't perfect (it never would be). Once I realized that friends were starting to not invite me to things because they assumed the answer was no a switch flipped. Turns out the more you invest in your social life, hobbies and relationships you significantly feel less stress about work as it becomes a smaller part of your overall life. Work became what I did but not who I was. So teachers: go home. go to that yoga class

Weird situation

I am a high school teacher at the same district where my daughter is an elementary student. There was a decision made to cut a teacher to help the budget which put my third grade daughter’s class at 33 children. My wife had a meeting with central office to discuss concerns about this change over the summer and then sent a follow up email following the first week of school with her concerns. I was not included in this email and it came from my wife’s personal email and was addressed to the superintendent and building principal. However, when they replied, they did not reply to her email at all, but replied to me, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Strange because I wasn’t involved in the initial thread. My wife was intentionally taken off the thread and me added. Is this standard? We are trying to separate me being an employee from parents of a student in the district and find them replying to me and not my wife, very weird. Are walkthroughs common in your district?

Hi! I just wanted to see how often or common it is for your principal/asst principal to come in and watch you teach. I notice they come a lot in the district i am in (and co-workers have quit due to the amount of times they have come in) but I have teacher friends from other counties that say they shouldn’t be coming in at all unless it’s a formal/informal observation and I wanted to know. AI in PD

It was my school’s first day of PD today. I’m at a K-8 title I near a major city. The amount of generative AI used today alone made me feel so uncomfortable. The signage around the school, the posters and tapestries hanging around the gym, our shirts we’re required to wear for events for the year, and the graphics on all the slides. It’s all slop. The amount of people not only okay with it but PRAISING it was even worse. Someone complimented the shirt design and the principal proudly confirmed that we had ChatGPT to thank for that. This hits different for me because multiple people on my team were literally reprimanded for using AI in their lesson plans last school year. Not sure how I’m going to navigate this year without hurting some feelings or ruffling some feathers. Is anyone else seeing this? What’s going on??? submitted by /u/1159seconds [link] [comments]

Hate having a support facilitator in class

VENT - TLDR - I hate having a support facilitator. I have a very low level middle grades class. I’m pushing them. First week of school they were doing the work a little bit of whining, but when they saw I meant business they got on it and were producing. Today the support facilitator showed up for the first time and it was chaos. They all turned in to whining, crying babies and learned helplessness tactics. It took an entire hour to write three sentences and only after she started handing out candy. WTF. I just can’t deal. I’d rather have them by myself. I could feel myself becoming elevated and anxious and every ounce of energy being drained out of me from what was happening. It was like a bunch of jackrabbits bouncing around. Yelling out, jumping out of seats to try to earn candy, one kid banging head on desk, cause he didn’t get chosen. My energy was just running too high, and I had an honors class to follow. Like, I have an idea, but I feel like I have 500+ things to do hanging over my head, and I don’t even know what the 500+ things are and can’t know until they absolutely need to be done. 😭 Is this just anxiety? Or is being somewhat clueless normal in the beginning? I feel like the fact I’m in self contained deserves a lot of emphasis because we have a LOT of downtime…. Which is to be expected of course (I did also major in special education) especially in the first two weeks of school (which we are still in) but I’m still kind of lost on where to start with curriculum when I’m just now implementing visual schedules and teaching kids how to use them. No one at my school is even putting any pressure on me to do things at a certain rate, but I just wanna feel like I’m doing the most I can for the kids and right now I feel like the most bare minimum employee subm

AC Unit Given to me as a gift for my extremely hot classroom.

So my school was built in the 1920s and it’s very old. My classroom is directly facing the sun and I have several windows directly facing the sun. The AC barely works in the school. Needless to say it gets extremely hot in my room. There were times in May and June it reached almost 90 degrees because our air was so bad. I have three fans going at all times and it barely does anything. So as a complete and total pipe dream I put on my AWList this year a portable AC unit. My thought was that people would give Amazon gift cards to contribute to it. It was $300. Well…I had a friend today buy the entire thing. I couldn’t believe it. My question is, do y’all think I will get in trouble for using it in my room? My room gets unbearably hot. Today was our first day back for teacher workdays and we were all sweating in the media center during our opening meeting. I don’t want to get in trouble with the district or anything. This feels like a forgiveness over permission situation. What do y’all t

Admin accuses me and other teacher of special treatment

Okay so basically I had this student last year who I also have this year who came to class on time everyday and she seemed to be very eager to learn. She was a very hard worker and did very well on all of tests, quizzes and mastery assignments. late last year my AP pulled me aside an basically indirectly accused me of giving her special treatment in my class because she was failing everything but my class and her African American History class, (I taught her Civics last year). It really had me reevaluating myself thinking maybe I was unconsciously giving her special treatment but I know that I treated her the same as other students. She was doing well all on her own. That African American History teacher and I are now in a PLC together and I found out this morning that AA History teacher also had a similar talk with admin last year where our AP accused him of special treatment because she had an A in his class. It's just frustrating because it sound to me like she is just more engaged

Anyone else hate the instructional coach at their school?

My instructional coach (let's call her M) is a pain in my ass for no good reason. I am on my 3rd year teaching, and she consistently bothers me about mundane shit. I understood my first year that she would be more present and should dwindle off, however she keeps bothering me about things like minor rules (minor as in most teachers break them) and guidelines regarding our books. What i mean about the books is that we DONT HAVE THEM, and yet she got upset that im using old books from last year. The fuck am I supposed to use then? We are 3 weeks into school with no books! Ive asked my colleges if they also get walk-ins every week at a minimum and they say "no wtf" and " i haven't seen her this year outside 1 meeting". She was already told to back off by my vice principle last year and now that she's gone M is up my ass again. TLDR: I hate this lady and want her nowhere near me submitted by /u/Yo_angelo_ [link] [comments]

“We can’t schedule the Science Fair until we know what basketball wants to do.”

Context: This statement is from our AD who is in charge of scheduling the gym, the only place in the school big enough to hold the Science Fair. Honors students in our county are required to participate. Open House is tonight and we have no date to put on our syllabus and distribute to parents. Does this happen everywhere or is it just us? submitted by /u/IntrovertedBrawler [link] [comments]

Didn't even get to interview

I did my student teaching and was a long term sub for two different teachers all at the same school. The one I finished last year the teacher I took over for had left me ZERO curriculum and then resigned two weeks after leaving. So I gave those students a whole year worth of what they needed to know in one semester. I went to every IEP meeting, I was a scorekeeper for sporting events, I got rave reviews from parents. I sent out positive messages when kids did well, my classes improved in reading comprehension across the board. And they knew I really cared too, a lot of them remembered my from student teaching. These kids wrote a freaking PETITION to the principal to hire me and all signed it. (Without my knowledge!) So when not one, but two jobs opened up I thought I at least had a solid shot. I reached out in July, told them I was interested, they told me they would let me know because it had to go to the pool hiring first (since I was a sub and non-continuing) Just found out today th

LACOE intern program

Hi everybody – I am a teacher heading into my sixth year of service in the state of California. I got my mild/moderate credential during Covid, cleared that, did the bridge program to update my credential, and now I'll be doing the LACOE intern program to get my ESN credential. Does anybody have any experience with the LACOE intern program? Just trying to get a little sense of the workload. Having to do yet another program in addition to holding down a full-time job seems arduous, but I'm up for any challenge. Thanks again !!! submitted by /u/Early_Box9100 [link] [comments]

Does anyone else not have a “why?”

May seem like a silly concept, but I sat in a meeting on Friday, and once again they brought up “What’s your why?” Personally, I’ve really struggled with this. I like kids, I enjoy teaching, but I don’t have a real “why.” I had some good teacher growing up that may have inspired my career choice, but honestly there’s really no reason for my career choice, no “why.” I just am. Maybe my “why” is the flexible schedule! But I know no one would like that answer lol. Anyone else feel like this? submitted by /u/Trick_Story_2548 [link] [comments]

Already dreading the battle with one student

My state passe a phone ban. My school is enforcing it. Phones go into a pouch as they walk in the door. Most students put their phone in the pouches. Others keep it away. If I see it, it goes in the pouch. Except for 1 student. He flat out says no. I had already written him up this first week. Friday he told me, "You already written me earlier in the week, just do that again." I had him escorted out of my classroom by campus police to the admin office. I fear this will be happening a lot. I have reached out to home and no response. I didnt hear anything from the office. But I did email his counselor. I will see what she says. I will probably email the rest of his teachers and see if they have same experiences. Its gonna be a long year. submitted by /u/jesslynne94 [link] [comments]
